Overland through CA

We are thinking of traveling overland from the US to Costa
Rica. In June and July. We would love to hear any
comments. How feasible it is, how much it is likely to
cost, if the weather is likely to impossible/impassable etc
or any other real barriers or tips.
Alternatively, we are really flexible, so if you have any
ideas about other routes or itineries they would also be
cool.
We are interested in hearing about diving in Guatemala and
Costa Rica. Are there any excellent backpacker travel
services specialising in trips through CA, or are we best
traveling by bus?

I can give some pointers on the bus thing. I went by bus
from Mexico City to Guatemala and Antigua. did some
traveling in Guatemala and then down to Nicaragua. Later on
I went on to Costa Rica and back up to Honduras. From
Guatemala to Costa Rica you can go with Tica Bus, which
runs between the capitals. Sometimes we took the chickenbus
instead. Much more fun but time consuming. More details?

The journey you talk about is very feasible as thousands do
it every year though IMHO doing all that in 2 months will be
rushing it. It will just give you a taste of the area. Done
the journey several times over the last couple of decades.
Are you looking at strictly a beach junket or are you
interested in ruins, local art, etc.? Things that I consider
a don't miss: Mexico-Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende,
Mexico City(Teotihuacan, the Anthro museum), Taxco, Oaxaca
and surrounds, Palenque, San Cristobal de las Casas,
Merida(Chitzen Itza and the Puuc Route), Tulum....Belize-Cay
Caulker(this is your dive spot)....Guatemala-You could do 2
months here-Antigua(my favorite), Panajachel and the lake
villages, Tikal(MUST SEE), Honduras-Copan and the Bay
    Islands(more diving), Nicaragua-Bluefields, Costa Rica-
Cahuita, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Monteverde, Volcano
    Arenal, Montezuma, Corcovado.
Give me an idea and I can give you some specifics on the
above. I'll be in the region this summer. Email any
    questions.
