  3. one correction Added by: tim
[Timestamp: Sat 24 April, 8:02 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Nancy's figures all look about right, except one - a bus
from Guate City downtown to airport would cost much less
than Q40 (I only paid Q25 going all the way from Guate City
to Quetzaltenango!). I'd figure about Q5 or so at the most
(maybe she was thinking of a taxi). I'd opt for the taxi
rather than trying to get luggage onto an overcrowded bus
in the city. Also a bottle of coke costs Q2-3. Have fun!

  4. Rafting Added by: G.P.
[Timestamp: Sat 24 April, 9:06 Tasmanian Standard Time]

If you want to go rafting and like a bit of excitement ...
Ask first if it rained enough. Normally, the river we went
to (I don't remember the name) was supposed to be class
    III.
But last year, it didn't rain the days before the rafting
day and we ended up paddling for more than six or seven
hours and the water was very low and there weren't
any "wild rides" ... The trip was great, though not in the
way I expected to be ...
I think it costed around 80$ : Bus ride from Antigua +
breakfast + lunch. And a great guide, I think he's first
    name was Alex or Axel.

  5. chichen itza Added by: joe (joetzu@yahoo.com)
[Timestamp: Sun 25 April, 11:52 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Expect to spend about 30 New Pesos for entrance to
Chichen Itza or Uxmal. Less for minor archeological sites.
You can get to Cancun city from the airport by bus
or combi for about 50 New Pesos.
If you take the bus to chichen itza from Cancun that will
cost about 50 New Pesos. If you decide to go to Merida
the 2nd class bus from Chichen to Merida is 20 New Pesos.
These prices are from 1997 and I doubt if they have changed.
At that time the New Peso was at 7.7 to 1 US dollar.
I paid anywhere from 2-5 NPesos fro a Coke in 1995. What
you really want is Agua Purificada..anywhere from 4-7 NP per
liter. Fresh juices are also about 5 NP .
Coffee and pan dulces in Cancun (at the Super Deli) was
25NP. Juice and sweet bread typically ran 20-25 NP.
I hope this helps...I kept careful records of everything I
spent on both trips to the Yucatan. Email if you have more
    questions. Have a great trip.

  6. Prices Added by: Kerstin (kerstin.brand@psmedia.co.uk)
[Timestamp: Tue 27 April, 18:47 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I just got back from a week in Cancun on Saturday.
We paid Pesos $90/each for a first class (= air cond.)
return trip (Pesos $59/ single) to Chichen Itza on the ADO
bus, which we caught from the downtown bus terminal.
I can't remember the exact entrance fee to Chichen Itza, but
it is more than Pesos $30. (I can check for you if you
like.) The inside of the temple is open until 15.00 and
    reopens at 16.00.
I also recommend you catch the local bus from the airport
rather than a taxi. I'm not sure about the fare, but it
won't be a lot. Taxis are very expensive and the local buses
go very often. Within Cancun any bus ride will cost you
Pesos $4.50 no matter where you get off.
Cheap hotels can be found around the bus terminal in
downtown. These are slightly more expensive but much better
than the Youth hostel on the Avenida Kukulkan which is very
    shabby.
The exchange rate last week was US $1 = Pesos $9 - $9.35
We did notice that there was no fixed rate. It seemed to
vary from one exchange bureau to the other. It's worth
comparing. Remember the rates will have changed again by the
    time you go.
    A film of 36 exp. cost Pesos $50 - 55 for Kodack/ Fuji.
Other brands are cheaper. Cheapest place is a big local
supermarket such as Chedraui or Wallmart.
The most we ever paid for a coke was Pesos $15 at the
Bullfight arena and as you can imagine things are very, very
    overpriced there.
Postcards can be bought for anything between Pesos $4 - $10.
I hope you have a great time! We did!!!!

  8. flores flight Added by: danielle
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 19:54 Tasmanian Standard Time]

last december i opted to take the one hr flight from
guatemala city to flore instead of the grueling day-long
bus ride. I thought it would be around 59 US accordign to
LP ruta maya guide and past travelers. PRICES WENT UP. By
this point I was towards the end of my trip and needed that
day saved by flying. However i did not know it would end
up costing 98 US. One cheap airline( mayaworld) stopped
service and aviateca runs on certain days. talk to a
travel agent to avoid setbacks and surprise price hikes.
Also I was shocked at how expensive entrance into Peten
park was for Tikal. I almost didn't have enough at the gate
after the hr minibus ride! Guatemala citizens get in cheap,
if you're foreign they stick it to ya! however tikal is a
must see. the amazing ruins set in virutally undisturbed
rainforest with monkeys swinging over your head is
    unforgetable.
