Trujillo safe?

We are planning to start a 6 month voyage in Central and
South America with some beach time and spanish studying in
Trujillo, Honduras. BUT I just read that rape, robberies,
and danger make the beaches there a really bad scene. Has
anyone been there lately? What was it like?

i was in Tela a year ago. i liked it and stayed a little
while but did not feel very safe, even though i didn't have
any problems. i personally talked to three or four differnt
people/groups who had been robbed on the beaches by knife
weilding assailants, all of them in broad daylight. There
were also sleazy guys posted in the street every day
offering drugs. (it felt like New York!) It was not safe
there to walk to the far ends of the beach or the more
remote beaches. i only went out at night when i could hook
myself up with some other people, espically men. i suspect
Trujillo would be similar. i do remember a girl i met who
had been studying there telling me she loved Trujillo. i
would have gone but didn't have time. i would check what
condition any of the coastal Honduran towns are in now
    because of the big hurricane.

We were in La Ceiba three years ago, and felt resonably
safe. Sure didn't feel that way in San Pedro or Tela.

I was there about two years ago, and the robberies were
getting worse, not quite on the Tela scale, but if you are
careful it shouldn't be too bad, there were about two or
three spanish schools (but only one which was advertised
outside the town), the beaches are so-so (the usual tips)
and be very careful at night (there is a great hotel and
restaurant on the beach I have forgotten the name but you
    will find it )

I was Trujillo about two years ago and it felt safe. Much
safer than Tela or La Ceiba. It seemed like a more quiet
place than the other towns. But naturally, don┤t stay out
    at night etc etc
