Hello, does anyone know if it is possible to take a Spanish
course for a year in Central America(I prefer Guatemala,
Mexico, Costa Rica)? I hear you need about a year or so to
become fluent in the language. I don't think I could afford
this, any idea how much this would cost, appox.? Thank you,
Amigos.

The schools will take you for as long as you want. Most
contract out on a week by week basis. For a year you could
probably work a discount. Your right about fluency however
most folk find they can acquire sufficient skills in less
time. Once you are speaking it you will find that you pick up
a lot just by living and traveling in the area. If you plan
to be a translator or engage in something that requires an
absolute command of the language then obviously you need
more. Guatemala is probably the cheapest of the 3 areas you
    list. Try this site:http://www.theantiguajournal.com/
They list schools in Antigua..IMHO..the best place to study.

You can also consider to stay and work (getting paid or
volunteer work), the idea is that depending on your current
spanish status, you can stay and instead of going to a
school for the entire year, take the time to be around
spanish speaking people, that is how you will really learn
    the language.
    good luck

I┤m travelling to Mexico in June for aprox. 2 months. I
would like to take in some Spanish language courses, for
about 1 month. As my budget is restricted, can anyone
recommend me some schools which also organise cheap
accomodations with families or on campus. I hope to be
staying in the Chiapas region (San Christobal). Secondly I
would like to do some volunteer work during my stay, any
    recommendations anyone??
Lastly, is it easy to travel to Guatemala from Chiapas
region and where should I most definately go??
    Thanks for any suggestions!!!

  4. Spanish For a year? Added by: Josh (eclesis@yahoo.com)

In Guatemala mosyt language schools offer intensive courses. Students generally study five days per week with betwee 4-7 hours per day individualized instruction.
I had the wonderful experience of doing such course a few years ago. Having then gone to work as a vouleteer, I was told by a couple who had minored in Spanish in college, that my Spanish was better after three weeks of intensive study than theirs after three years of college level.
It all depends on your level of motivation. Go off on your own, and avoid the lazy temptation of only hainging out with gringos and speaking English.
