Busy in N.Z.?

Hi, I┤m a 19-year old Swede who┤ll be heading for N.Z. in
December. I just wonder if there┤s going to be crowded
with tourists in all N.Z. this summer because of the new
millennium and all? Will it be necessary to book hostels,
buspasses etc. earlier than usual?
At first I planned to go to Gisborne for Newyearseve, but
since I heard that the population is going to increase ten
times or so, I might just re-schedule.
So, does anyone have any other suggestions on where to
spend the magic night?
Maybe in or around Napier?(I prefer the East coast)
Happy for every suggestion!

  1. Try Mahia Added by: Jo

Try the Mahia peninsula, which will be one of the first places to see the sun. Should go off quite nicely, but without the tourist crowds. A little bit of distance from any towns though. Book ahead where possible - and don't forget about the possibility of staying in camp grounds - usually a lot more enjoyable and about the same price as a hostel (cabins, and tent rental usually available).

The east coast is treating the millenium as its personal
cash cow andprices will increase greatly over this period
and most places will be full. The grasping attitude of most
tourist operators over there is abhorrent to many Kiwis,
vote with your feet and stay away.

I am an Australian Travel Agent specialising in NZ
(recognised by the NZ Tourist Bureau being one of 300
Australia wide)and have just come back from a conference
with the NZ Tourist Bureau. My Advice is STAY AWAY from
Millenium time. Gisborne around 30k inhabitants is trying
to gear up for over 100k tourists - please!!
As Steve says they are trying to milk it and it is unseemly.
Sorry can't suggest any alternative for a party - I'm to old
    too know.

  4. Advice Added by: Traveler
[Timestamp: Tue 18 May, 6:03 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I just returned from NZ and the nightly news had several
stories about gearing up for the millinneum. Almost all
indicated they would be increasing prices although a few
    bars said they wouldn't.
I personally would not want to be there with all the normal
tourist season and then add to that the millinneum bug.
(And what if something does happen with the Y2K problem,
how far are you from home??)
I can't offer other suggestions though on where to stay
since I am not a native and familiar with all the little
places that might be less crowded/pricey.

knees up at Mt.Manganewi (and I am sure I've spealt it wrong!), we'll
be there going over from the UK to see the Millenium in in style!!
    Maybe we'll see you there
