  1. hitching in Queensland
    Created by: steve (steveloo@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Wed 26 May, 11:51 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Hi everyone.
I heard that it's illegal to hitch in Queensland. Is this
true? If the police catch you hitching, what would they do:
jail or fine? Are drivers often willing to give rides? Also
I would like to know any special precautions I should take
for hitching. I already hitched through NSW, Victoria and
Tasmania so I know about the long waits.

I am currently in LA and was looking for a cheap way home to
Oz. I've heard that it is possible to get on a yatch as
crew but have no idea how to go about doing this. If anyone
has done this sort of thing before some advice would be more
    than a little helpful.
    Thanks, missing the clean water,
    Pete.

Hi, I'm a Brit going over to Australia for six weeks, I'm
planning to spend a good chunk of time in Adelaide (I've
got family who will let me board for free). I was
wondering what the music scene was like. I'm into punk,
metal, a bit of ska.....d&b, hip hop, funk Bascially
anything you can lose your head in a mosh pit to or get
down on a dance floor to. Any good venues or clubs worth
checking out, bearing in mind that I'm on a fairly tightish
budget. Also I'm going from the 6th july to 10th august
(in adelaide) any good gigs on of bands/djs who you'd
    recomend seeing??
    Thanks loads sarah

    Just two questions:
    1. Do you know any budget accommodation in Pago Pago?
earlier edition of LP Samoa guide listed a few cheap
guesthouses (up to 10$ per person), but the last (1998)
edition doesn't mention them. Has anybody been there
    recently?
    2. Has anybody been to American Samoa National Park
on Tau island? Are there any trails available?
    Thanks, Mike

    1. I have heard that if you have Immigrated to Austrailia then you can move over to NZ and be able to work/live. Is this true.
    2. If so, then is Austrialia easier to emmigrate to?
    3. Does anyone know the best way to get into NZ permanent.

  13. York, WA
    Created by: Marc (mra@bsb.be)
[Timestamp: Tue 25 May, 17:12 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Gidday,
During my recent trip down under, I had this opportunity
to visit York in Western Australia.
This tiny little village is oganised on its main street
(Avon Terrace) and the visit of a couple of pleasant museum
will tell how tough a pioneer's life was. The Balladong
Farm that is announced to be one of the very first farm in
the country will propose to discover the pioneer's life
through a small movie, and its actual state may let one
imagine how people had to put up with no real facilities.
The Gaol and Courthouse museum will tell the story of
the ancestors of the boys and girls in blue in the country,
how convicts were held in prison, and a very interesting
sight of a pioneer's house is presented: life is something
hard without electricity of fresh water ...
All the previous is explained in LP over Western Australia.
    Now comes the new bit.
On the way to York coming from Perth, in the middle
of the journey, alongside the road, one will find a very
pleasant tree root that people keep decorated with many
colours and that is known as 'Fred'. Fred is every now and
then re-painted when colours wash off or when other people
will have changed its design. Sometimes the root (1m50 high)
is even disguised for special celebration days. And the
people I met told me it was a funny attraction, that no
one knows who takes care of, but there it goes.
That's all folks and mistery from magic Oz.
    Have a good day mate,
    Marc, Belgium.

    Hi,
In early June, I will be driving from Port Augusta in South
Australia up to Alice Springs. I hope to do the journey in
a leisurely, interesting way, taking about 10 - 14 days,
travelling into Flinders Ranges, possibly to Oodnadatta
(along the Track), Coober Pedy, Uluru/Kata Tjuta, Kings
Canyon. Basically bush camping or back-of-the-car stuff,
checking the place out properly. If you fancy joining me on
my odyssey then drop me a mail before the end of May.

Hi there. I am a Canadian traveller who will be heading to
Australia/NZ in june and july of this year. However I only
have 1 week to spend in NZ and my flight lands in Auckland
so my question is for others who have been or live there,
what have been your favourite sites to see? What are the
essentials or must sees? I'm not sure if I'll have time to
see the South Island so i guess we'll have to stick to the

The whole of the Great Ocean Road is worth seeing but allow a few days, we only had two and it wasn't long enough.

    Hi there,
We plan a travel to pacific islands in august.
I found some old info about AIR NAURU's 'Exlorer Pacific
    Pass'
There is absolutely no info about AIR NAURU in europe.
The AIR NAURU flights are not mentioned in the international
    booking systems as 'SABRE'.
So I'm suspicious if AIR NAURU is still operating.
    Does anyone have some info.
    Thanks.

I would like to go to Eastern Europe and Scandanavian

Now what I need to know is if there are other travellers
that have done, as I'm a 44 year old backpacker that would
like to see as much as possible of the poeple and their
culture I need some suggestions on how to travel in these
countries as well as in between the countries in the most

So any info. on alternative in-expencive transport would be

  72. Kangaroo Town
    Created by: Australian
[Timestamp: Fri 21 May, 10:44 Tasmanian Standard Time]

For all you nternational tourists comming to Australia, you
should consider Kangaroo Town, just south of Alice Springs.
Built in 1692, this quaint town served as a centre for
breaking in wild kangaroos for racing. However, it soon
transformed itself into a tourist town as the market for
racing kangaroos soon died out. However, there is still a
thriving racing herd of kangaroos based just outside the
town gate that are put on the local track every third sunday
of the month. There is an Inn run by Big Bertha, an
immigrant from Lithuania in the early stages of the century.
Just three dollars Australian a night, there is a nightly
kangaroo dance in which locals pair up with their favourite
racer. Watch out, because the last time a tourist brought
meat - especially kangaroo meat - in with them to Kangaroo
Town, the Kangaroos ran amuck for three days in fright ab\nd
disgust. Come in winter as in summer temperatures reach 100
degrees celcius and the residents move to their underground
caves for six months. However, travellers in early June run
the risk of being trampled to death in the annual Kangaroo
    charge down main street.

    Hope to see you there!!!!

    Dear Australia,
I am reading a book by a famous Australian writer called
Nine Tales of Heroism and Drinking Beer in the Outback.
I want to start to learn what makes you people tick, in
anticipation for my upcoming trip there. Although the book
has been translated, some words of course have no clear
English equivalent. Could someone please give the meaning
for the following words: footie, uni, kamawazibombat,
    toomaladom-maladoo, wiki-waki-round-about,
ruta-tik-tak-wami-a bee. Australian seems like such a
colourful language I can hardly wait to start learning
    myself.

  83. Advice on Whitsunday Cruises
    Created by: Paul (paulmono@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 20 May, 21:50 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Can anyone please give me advice on cruising around the
Whitsunday Islands? I do have a couple of specific questions
but would appreciate any advice and would both enjoy and
appreciate hearing from people who have been on these
    cruises.
    My specific questions are:
    (1) From people who've been on the cheaper cruises ie depart
on the afternoon rather than the morning, did you feel that
    you had enough time?
    (2) I've been told here that of the 3 day 3 night cruises
Tallarook (Tallarook V does this one) tend to have run-down
yachts. The trouble is I've found that hostel workers (who
told me this) and touts give you bullshit advice to try to
sell you the stuff which is best for them. This sounds the
best of these tours to me, for a 26 year old young acting
couple on a limited budget (as opposed to Anaconda III and
Solway Lass; the latter even has a licensed bar which would
prove very costly for me!). I would appreciate any thoughts.
    (3) Any advice on the best companies to book with, or is it
best to book through a hostel?
I'm actually in Airlie Beach right now and would appreciate
as quick an answer as possible so we can go ahead and book.
Thanks in advance for all replies.
    Paul.

ranges and Grampians, I'm wondering which others places
worth to stop. So what do you think about ?
    - Wilson's Promontory Nat Park
    - Ballarat
    - Mootwingee and Mungo Nat Park ( near Broken hill and
    Mildura )
    - great australian bight :
Does it worth to stop for 1 day for someone travelling by
bus ? Any quite cheap flight ... ?
    * Wayward between Melb and adelaide : great ? price ?
    accomodation included ?
    Thanks in advance
NB: I would be interested in renting a car in Melb and may
be Adelaide to avoid "organised trips". But as I travel by
my own it's almost impossible. Any travellers in the same
    situation ... contact me !
( I should be in Melb around the 9th, in Adelaide around the

We are going away for 3 weeks at the end of Jan/start of

out to cover the rent. It is situated 35 minutes walk from
the central city in Auckland, or a 7$ taxi fare. It would
only cost $200 a week. Has any one done this with success
or had there house trashed? $200 a week would cover the
rent, phone and power. Plus I think if we rented it to a
couple it would be cheaper than them staying in a
    backpackers.

  93. Car Break-Ins in King Cross area.
    Created by: sheldon

WARNING TO ALL BACKPACKERS COMING TO SYDNEY!

DO NOT, REPEAT **NOT**, LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN **ANY** CAR
THAT IS PARKED NEAR **ANY** BACKPACKER HOSTEL!
ESPECIALLY DON'T LEAVE A BACKPACK VISIBLE!

This is unfortunately a continuing problem in the inner city
of Sydney, PARTICULARLY around the Darlinghurst & Kings
    Cross area...

Many backpackers head to The Cross on their first visit to
Sydney. The street scum who hang around The 'Cross have
known for years that backpackers are easy targets for quick
cash and pawnable valuables. It's also known to everybody
that many backpackers come to The Cross to buy/sell cars.
Theft from cars in the inner city backpacker hostel
districts has always been, and continues to be, a BIG
PROBLEM! If a backpack is visible inside the car, chances
are the car WILL be broken into - you may find you stuff a
few days later, minus passport, money, etc, but it will be
strewn all along the gutter of some scummy Kings Cross back
    alley.

HOW MANY TIMES do I have to hear tourists and backpackers in
Sydney recite the same old sob-story over and over, I've
heard it so many times now!!! It is the easiest and
commonest way for backpackers to get ripped off in Sydney.

    SO WISEN UP!
    BE CAREFUL!
    DON'T BE DUMB!
TAKE ALL YOUR STUFF OUT OF THE CAR!
DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING VALUABLE IN ANYBODY'S CAR!

    Regards,
    Sheldon from Sydney.

Milford Sound Cruise and/or some of those 5-in-1 package
    deal thingy watsits etc etc.
Also anyone know whether it is worthwhile travelling from
Wellington to Napier, then across to New Plymouth before
heading to Auckland? I won't have wheels so will be doing
it by bus and will have only 3 - 4 days to get from
Wellington to Auckland (I will be going to Rotorua, Taupo &

I got my visa!I got my visa!I got my visa!I got my visa!
    I got my visa today!
And I'll tell you why I'm so pleased about it. I'm 26, so
all those doom and gloom stories about not being able to
get one over 25 is rubbish. And I guess it proves that they
haven't run out of places either.
I hedged my bets fairly thoroughly by including in my
application everything that I could think of. My boss wrote
me a letter of recommendation, saying that I had been
granted a year's leave of absence, and could come back on
the same pay. I also wrote a mini essay saying why I wanted
to go, why it had taken me til now, how I was looking
forward to exchanging cultural knowledge and and a bank
statement with $5040 Australian dollars in it, so they knew
I wasnt going to be a drain of the country's resources.
The only thing that caught me out was putting that I would
be doing mainly bar work or waitressing on the application
form. They wrote back asking for a doctor's letter.
These are the three things the doctor's letter had to say:
"applicants involved in any of the above occupations are
required to provide a recent certificate of report from
their doctor as to the applicants current state of health
    including fitness to:
    travel to Australia
remain in australia for the proposed period of stay
    return to their home country"
the "above occupations" being things like education,
    healthcare, and food and drink.

But don't feel so good about yourself just yet Aussie,
because your lot are a very close second! In fact, if you
continue in your beer swilling, Kangaroo murdering, wanker
talking, no friend having, Grand Canyon visiting way, it is
predicted you will top the charts by early next century. So
you better be nice to us. I want to see 17 million
apologies on this TT by Friday morning USA time. Or there
    will be trouble.

My boyfriend and I are travelling from Cairns to Sydney in September by bus - What we can't decide is whether to use Oz Experience or McCafferty's (sorry to bring this debate up again!) We're from the UK and it's our first time to Australia, so we've no idea. We are not really bothered which one we take but any comments/views from those who have used either would be really useful. Thanks

  111. Working in Oz in Winter

    Hi.
I have the funds to get me to Oz and enough for a week or
two's cheap living, But I'm looking for work which can fund
me staying there between July and The end of September. I'm
aware that its the winter there now and so the toursist
trade will be a bit slack.
How likely is it that i can find work that will pay me
enough to live day to day and maybe have enough to travel
for a couple of weeks before going home??
I dont care really which for the work takes , I work hard
and i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. But I have
particular skills/experience in IT, management or
    retailing...with a little accounting knowlege.
    Any advicewould be great.
    Thanks
    Kirstie.

Hi, Just looking for a bit of an experienced voice.
Coming out to Oz in early July, possibly in company,
probably alone as I wouldn't mind avoiding the
ever-burgeoning Irish crowd for a short time at least....
Had planned on heading straight to Sydney (just cos you do)
but recently people have been saying on no account should I
do this as you'll fall into the "trap" and basically not
leave cos it's too much of a buzz. I'll spend all me dough
on rent and beer and leave any travelling till my visas
almost up and then where will I be??? Didn't my mother never
    tell me etc etc etc...
The other option is Darwin-Cairns and work my way down over
2-3 months. But how feasible is this, especially with
limited funds. Is there work in winter?? Are their any
harvests (he asks expecting to be ridiculed)... you know
    that sort of stuff....
I'm coming bright eyed, bushy-tailed and innocent as the
driven snow, so any advice would be appreciated......
    Post here or email me.....
    Ta, Don.

  113. Destination Oz - a few tips from anyone?

    Hi everyone,
Apart from relying on the trusty LP guides, and the huge
family that I have out in NSW, QLD, VIC and SA, I really
would be grateful for anyone's suggestions for places well
worth checking out in NSW or QLD (pref NSW as I won't be in
QLD for long). For info: I'm not on a tight budget, but not
throwing cash about for this trip either (unfortunately!!).
I'm looking for something "different" from all the usual
touristy areas/stuff (like seeing Sydney - I love the city,
but I've near enough combed every area)- especially
anything that involves the best place for sunsets, scenery,
coasts/beaches (or anything that would really make a good
photo memory) - I would like to do a bit of hiking/walking
also. So any good ideas regarding anything that caught your
attention guys and gals (especially from residents in
    NSW/QLD), would really be appreciated!
    Many thanks.
    :O)

    Hi there
I've been travelling in Australia for 3 months, pretty much
keeping out of the way of big cities (they kill me!) and
tourist-backpackers, living out of the back of a
station-wagon, and working for keep on organic farms, etc,
    through WWOOF (see the website).
Any similar folks out there who fancy joining me for the
long trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs via Flinders
Ranges, Oddnadatta Track, Uluru/Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon,
etc? (Off the beaten track without having to fork out $500
    to a tour company!)
It'd be a camping, share petrol and music type of
arrangement with plenty of good nattering, leaving in early
June, so if that sounds like your idea of good travelling
    then give me a mail.
    Happy travels,

Everyday I read posts from Australians who hate America,
hate Americans, and aren't shy about telling anyone who will
listen. In fact there is a post like that on the N American
branch right now! So my question is this: why do you
people keep coming here in droves if you can't stand the
place? Is it some perverse Aussie right of passage to
endure a trip to someplace you hate? Your numbers
have become so overwhelming of late here, that Congress is
now considering a bill to build a giant wall across the
Pacific to stem the tide! I myself always take my holidays
somewhere I like ( and that is why I don't go to Australia).
But answers from those of you able to read and write (is

However I can only stopover one way. Returning from London
I would only use the ticket as far as Tokyo , so could I
check my baggage in to Tokyo or would it end up in

stopover if request this at checkin. Has anyone any idea

    Hello,
Myself and my husband are going on our first round the
world trip in July at the grand old age of 28. We are
hoping to be in Sydney for the new year and suspect that
most of the hostels will be booked up by now, the thing is
because we don't know how long we will want to spend in
U.S.A, Fiji and New Zealand before getting to Oz we are
unsure about the best way to get ourselves somewhere to
stay when we don't have a definate date in mind. We don't
actually know anyone in Sydney but we have mates who have
been traveling and met people along the way, they reckon
it's perfectly acceptable for us to contact them and they
would be happy to give us a bed for the night e.t.c. I
don't know how anyone feels about this, but I can't help
feeling it's a little bit rude to just phone up a complete
stranger out of the blue and expect to stay with them, or
even expect them to be in!
Friends say this is all part of the travelling
mentality/adventure and any friend of theirs blah blah..
Anyway I'm rambleing but, please please somebody give us
    some advice.
    Thanks in advance

  132. the best beaches on the Esat coast of Oz
Created by: Bryce from Oz (bw_wentworth@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 14:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Here is the scoop on the best beaches on the East Coast of
Australia. I have lived in northern NSW for 20 years and
during my periods of unemplyment, I made it my point to
visit every beach from Frazer island to Sydney. I have also
been north to Cape Tribulation and south to Jervis Bay. I
have also been to over 30 countries, so this is how our
    beaches compare.
First, I consider the perfect beach to be small, no
pollution, crystal clear water and have forested headlands
    and no settlement.
I don't like long beaches because they are generally
rougher. Anyone who has swum at Frazer Island or Surfer's
Paradise will know what I mean. The longshore drift on
these beaches will whisk you off your feet and deposit you
100m downcurrent in no time at all. Worse still are rips
that send a large body of water out to sea. One minute you
can be standing in waist deep water, the next you will be
over your head and 100m out to sea. Many people die each
year in rips - they are no lauging matter. And in general,
the larger, the beach, the more rips it will have.
If you like parties and "alternate culture", stick to the
tried and tested Byron Bay and Noosa Head. However, if you
want to get away from "civilization" and like walking and
finding secluded beaches (and have them to yourself), read
    on.
My favourite beaches are around Jervis Bay, Hat Head
National Park and Fingal Head. It is very hard to find a
"bad beach" on the east coast, but these stand out. Also in
my opinion, these beaches are nicer than on the mainland of
North Queensland. I went up to Cape Tribulation (and
everywhere in between) last year and can say that
everything that you can see there, you can see in New South
Wales. Also the water up there was muddy (yes - muddy) and
very disappointing. The postcards that you see of blue
waters and no clouds were taken on those few days where
there was no wind and no rain for a week. The reality is
different. Judging from the amount of advertising, you
would think that Queensland is the best place for a
holiday. That is not necessarily the case. The only reason
that Queensland has this reputaion is because it has the
most agressive marketting campaign and is popular in July
and August when all the "snowbunnies" are pissed off with
the cold weather and need to thaw out. Outside those times,
the heat is oppressive and there are marine stingers in the
water that can kill in 3 minutes.
My favourite beaches are the beaches around Hat Head,
Fingal Head, Steamer's Beach at Jervis Bay and Gap Beach at
South West Rocks. These places don't see many (if any)
overseas tourists and quite often you will have the beach
to yourself. You will need your own transport and a good
map to find these places, but if you do get to them you
will think them much nicer than Byron Bay or Nossa Head.
The two best beaches in Sydney (by the way) are Shelley
Beach at Manly and Neilson Park at Vaucluse. You can get to
these beaches by public transport and the water at both is
    sensational.
Even in Sydney, I go rock fishing and get to places where I
can't see a soul. If you really want to escape to such
places, try walking around the rock platforms under Rosa
Gulley, north from under the "ladders" behind the North
Bondi Golf Course and around the platforms at Old Man's Hat
at Manly. As well as being red-hot fishinf places, the
chances are, you won't see a soul (these places may be a
bit dangerous to get to - so be careful).
If you want more advice, please e-mail me. And I don't want
    any flamimg from Queenslanders!

We had planned to spend a majority of this time in the
Exmouth area. Please let us know the conditions there now.
Did Vance damage the reef? Will Exmouth be capable of
    accepting tourists by Oct.?
    Thanks,

  139. Travelling the Pacific

My employer granted me a sabbatical year, which I plan to
spend travelling the (South) Pacific islands.
Could anybody tell me if it is possible to go from one
island-group to another by boat? I read you have to have
proof of onward travel, but when you arrive by boat of
course you don't have that.I also read about having to book
accomodation in advance for the Cook islands.Does anybody
know how to solve these problems, if they indeed are
    problems?
I would also like to hear from single travellers who have
been there; I got the impression many islands are honeymoon
destinations, and though I have nothing against newlyweds, I
can imagine they tend to keep to themselves. I love to
travel alone, but I also need a good conversation with other
    travellers every now and then!
I appreciate your taking the trouble to answer me, thanks !

This page seems to have quite a few people who obviously
don't think we are worth talking to for GENERAL advice.
What do you the public think?
Did you know the average commission for a travel agent is
    around 10%?
Have you ever wondered why every travel agent you talk to
about DOMESTIC Australian airfares quotes exactly the same
price (because we only make 4-5% on the sale so why
    discount).
    Any other questions or whaterver?

Y2K in Australia Added by: The Shadow
[Timestamp: Sun 16 May, 5:48 Tasmanian Standard Time]
I am from the States and work in the computer field. I have
been involved and aware of the Y2K problem for sometime. I
am seriously considering going to Australia because of the
major problems that I see happening here. The reason I am
considering Australia is I like your country and I feel it
could be self supporting without all the ties to the rest
of the world like we are here in the USA. Also it will be
summer and if their are power problems at least there will
not be the cold to deal with. I am told that your country
is working on Y2K but I have been unable to get the kind of
information that would assure me of your progress in fixing
it. The biggest fix I believe is the power grid. I have e-
mailed your power companies in Victoria and have gotten no
response. I am wondering if they are doing anything?? Would
those that are really up on Y2K and what Australia is doing
and really know what is being done please post that
information here. If you work on a Y2K team and have inside
information it would be great. If you listen to what
companies tell the media of course they will tell you
everything will be OK and they are working on it. There is
only 6 months to go. Not enough time unless they are about
finished or are finished and doing testing.

  151. Savage mosquitoes
Created by: Bryce from Oz (bw_wentworth@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 15:35 Tasmanian Standard Time]

This might be the wrong time of year to meantion it, but
watch out for the summer mosquitoes on the East coast. They
are absolutely savage and may carry disease.
If you are in the major cities such as Sydney, the
mosquitoes aren't that bad (except for Cronulla), but get
out into the scrub and they will eat you alive, both day
and night. I have lived outside Sydney most of my life and
I will tell you that the worst places I have been for
mosquitoes are Yamba, Hat Head National Park, Jervis Bay
National Park and Gippsland Lakes. There are obviously more
and I hope that some people can add to this collection. In
the above mentioned places, your body will be covered in
blood from all the squashed mosquitoes if you don't have
repellent. Even with repellent, there will be a grey haze
of mosquitoes hanging around about a metre away from you at
night. People may disagree, but in an independant survey
done in "Wild" magazine, "Bushmans" insect repellent came
    up best by miles.
People may also disagree, but mosqitoes can be deadly in
Austrlalia. For those who are sceptical, hit the "search"
button on your browser, look up "Ross River Virus" and come
back and tell me if you would like to catch it. And there
are other nasties the humble mozzie can carry.
After having been to over 30 countries in my life (many
tropical countries included), I cn say that there are more
mozzies in parts of Australia than anywhere I have been.

All you pay for is gas, have so many days to deliver the

"The Castle" is a quirky, funny Aussie film that was made
on a low budget and released to the Aussie market about 2
years ago. The producers have made millions out of it - it
realy does appeal to the droll Australian sense of humour.
The Castle was released in the USA last weekend and is
showing in about a dozen cinemas. If you're American and
like Aussie humour, it's worth tracking down. I understand
that it's showing at an art-house cinema somewhere in New
York City but don't know where else.
If you know other places, add a post here!
Maybe your review too - I wonder how many Americans
    would "get" "The Castle's" humour.

In N.Z has anyone taken the Kiwi Experience, or Best of NZ

What sites do you suggest seeing. I am in N.Z for January,

Going to Cook Islands to welcome the new millennium.
Confused about where to stay. Went to www.cookpages.com but
most places listed, with exception of hostels, were
surprisingly expensive. I couldn't tell if the hostels were
crap or ok. I will have a travel companion but it is not
necessary that we be together. Will be there for about 22
days, so money will go FAST. Does anyone have some tips re:
places to stay. Please let me know. Happy new year! - Lucy.

If you are in Australia please tell what the last meal you
ate was. Exclude snacks - just what your last meal was. This
will let me know what typically people in Australia eat.
    Chow! (get it?)

During my brief stay in this wonderful country I have heard
several people referring to things as "unAustralian".
Can someone please define "un Australian" and tell me why
    this would necessarily be undesirable.
And do other countries have "un-thingy" behaviour?
    ("UnZimbabwean?", "Un-Chinese"??)

  180. City Characters, Weirdos & Bums...
    Created by: sheldon
[Timestamp: Wed 26 August, 18:26 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Hey, all you people who live/have lived/have been in
Sydney, and anywhere else for that matter...

What tales do you have about the weirdos and strange
characters you've come across in cities???

Eg, some of the strange Sydney street characters I see often
(if you're coming to Sydney for the first time, keep a
    lookout for these "famous" people):

That old guy who walks around town with a sign strapped to
his front&back saying "U.F.O. - The End Is Coming" or
something like that... You might think it's a worn out
cliche of the 60's and 70's but I saw him just the other day
(again). It says something about a verse in the book of
Isiah or something... He just walks around smiling, wearing
    this sign.

There used to be a homeless guy around the inner city of
Sydney known to city workers as "Champagne Charlie". He was
a Japanese guy who started appearing on Sydney's streets
just after Xmas Eve one year, always drunk and always
carrying a flagon of cheap champagne, and always very happy,
singing loud unintelligible songs. He used to be dressed in
a marvellous suit and tie, which gradually became tattier
and tattier and tattier as the days dragged into weeks, the
weeks into months... one day he must've lost his shoes, so
he started stumbling around town in these huge size 13 or
something shoes. I haven't seen him for a while - anyone
know what happened to Champagne Charlie???

And there's that old guy who "busks" in Martin Place,
playing the 'guitar' on just a plain old plank of wood. He
seems to be in his own little world - I see him a lot around
town, mainly in Martin Place. He's just there, groovin' to
himself, lazily 'strumming' and mumbling... something...

    sheldon.
