Hi, Just looking for a bit of an experienced voice.
Coming out to Oz in early July, possibly in company,
probably alone as I wouldn't mind avoiding the
ever-burgeoning Irish crowd for a short time at least....
Had planned on heading straight to Sydney (just cos you do)
but recently people have been saying on no account should I
do this as you'll fall into the "trap" and basically not
leave cos it's too much of a buzz. I'll spend all me dough
on rent and beer and leave any travelling till my visas
almost up and then where will I be??? Didn't my mother never
tell me etc etc etc...
The other option is Darwin-Cairns and work my way down over
2-3 months. But how feasible is this, especially with
limited funds. Is there work in winter?? Are their any
harvests (he asks expecting to be ridiculed)... you know
that sort of stuff....
I'm coming bright eyed, bushy-tailed and innocent as the
driven snow, so any advice would be appreciated......
Post here or email me.....
Ta, Don.

The citrus harvests in the central Queensland area west of
Bundaberg (Gayndah & Munduberra) should still be in full
swing at that time of the year.
The Tomato harvest in the Bundaberg/Childers area will run
until November.
You may pick up some Apple picking work in the Stanthorpe
area (south-west of Brisbane)but I'm not sure when the
harvest is.
I would imagine most back-packer hostels have some idea of
what local seasonal work is available.
Good luck - it isnt the easiest way to make money but hope
this helps.
Hi Donnchadh
I would highly recommend that you NOT go straight to Sydney.
I am almost finished my year and landed in Sydney in July
last year after 2 weeks in North Queensland. For one thing,
winter weather in Sydney is a bit like Galway in November,
for another thing work is not as easy to get as people tell
you, and mostly - you will spend all your money boozing etc.
and get stuck there. Sydney is a great place and the craic
is very good but, wait til about October or so before you
head down there. We're in Brisbane at the moment and its
been great, cheap accommodation, lovely climate, very
friendly people etc. Good luck anyway, I'm sure you've heard
this a gazillion times, but you'll have a ball over here...
