is it true what i read somewhere that the 1,000+ mile route
(route #1) from Brisbane-Cairns rarely touches the coast?
...that it's just endless sugarcane fields? (i thought the
drive would show off some spectacular coastline, non?)

"Great Ocean Road near Sydney" - not quite. However if
you're looking for a great drive with ocean scener,
anywhere along the Pacific Hwy between Melbourne and
    Brisbane is recommended.

South of Rocky (Rockhampton) youll see v little of the coast, and even north of there its not real close. If you want coastal scenery, this may not be your ideal trip. However Cairns-Port Douglas is great, but only a few hours worth of driving.

I drove the Bris-Cairns route (1750km)each way every week
for 5 yrs and it is true you see very little of the coast
but you are not far from it.Between Brisbane and
Rockhampton (650km) you won't see any coast at all unless
you divert from the main highway and go through Bundaberg
or Gladstone,Between Rockhampton and Mackay (340km) it is
called the Marlborough stretch or the Paddock as most
truckies put it. It is mostly cattle country and not much
in between except for a beautiful view of the ocean at
Clairview (Hightide hopefully) For a stunning view divert
from the highway at proserpine and head to Airlie Beach and
Shute Harbour this is your stepping stone to the Whitsunday
group of islands and the scenery is breath-taking.From
there head to Townsville (401km)north of Mackay,Magnetic
island is worth a look some Beautiful little beaches and
bays. From there it is (360km)to Cairns, You will see a
breath-taking view as you go over the cardwell range it
overlooks the southern end of hinchinbrook island, overall
the scenery on the main highway is fairly lame (with a few
exceptions)until you get to about tully (divert to mission
beach here) and the rainforest kicks in. The drive from
Cairns to Port Douglas (70km) is spectacular pure ocean
views for about (30kms)not to be missed is the atherton
tablelands drive. If you want nightclubs stay in cairns if
you want PARADISE stay in port douglas and visit the
Daintree Rainforest.Hope i've helped feel free to e-mail
    me SEE-YA
