I wonder if somebody could help to direct me in the right
direction: I would like to go from Australia/ New Zealand
to Japan, South Korea, Red China and Vietnam. From Vietnam
I would like to go to Eastern Europe and Scandanavian
countries.
Now what I need to know is if there are other travellers
that have done, as I'm a 44 year old backpacker that would
like to see as much as possible of the poeple and their
culture I need some suggestions on how to travel in these
countries as well as in between the countries in the most
economical way. I intend to do the trip over an period off
12 months.
So any info. on alternative in-expencive transport would be
appreciated.

You've asked such a broad question, its difficult to
answer. My tip, if you are trying to keep costs down would
be to use local transport rather than the pre booked-travel
agent organised variety. Which ever town you find your
self in, just find the local train/bus station and you will
be able to set yourself in the right direction. Perhaps
take a look on the South East Aisa tree as well.
Have a great trip. I'd love to go to China.

I am an Australian Travel Agent and I thought I might help.
The last post generally is spot on. While she has not been
to China, I luckily just have and it was great (though not
back-packing). I know generally transport is dirt cheap as
I paid around $3.50 Aust for a taxi I had for 30 minutes,
because the guy went out of his way I gave him $2.50 tip and
he thought it way too much so you can imagine.
You could try getting a bicycle, In China they actually have
a tiny license plate (much like cars) most have no lights
but peddle along in the night time and vehicles seem to
respect their right of travel on roads.
I am unsure what you are doing re your airfare but you have
a couple of options. Fly one of the Korean airliners to
Japan (it goes via Seoul) then it becomes a bit messy.
Singapore airlines (with Air New Zealand and Ansett) has a
$1599.OO year round fare but it could be difficult on the
Jaspan Seoul and Seoul to China.
They do collect in Ho Chi Minh City though through Singapore
    back to Sydney.
    Hope this little bit helps.
