Sydney is more populated and has warmer weather than
Melbourne. I prefer Sydney over Melbourne because there are
more sites that interest me (ex. the Opera House). I heard
that the clubbing scene is better in Melbourne.

  2. Sydney wins hands down! Added by: Kristen

I have visited both Sydney & Melbourne on numerous
occasions, and Sydney is by far the better city!
Melbourners are rude and inconsiderate, very self centred -
they don't think that anything else exists outside their
own city. Sydneyis just fun, fun, fun, always plenty to see
and do, and I always felt safe where ever I went.

I found Melbourne to much better than Sydney, less to see
from a toursit perspective, but a much nicer place to spend
time, a real lifestyle kind of town.
Great nightlife, friendly people, loads of stuff going on.
Sydney struck me as just like any other big city, whereas I
found Melbourne had a character of its own.

  4. agency Added by: Walter (valleyt@effect.net.au)

I am a Travel Agent in Canberra and I used to live in
Melbourne. Always LOVED visiting Sydney, but live there????
I always found Sydney a bit expensive, drivers pretty
ordinary and very insular. The layout of the city centre is
    very bad and confusing.
Sydney was so smart they dumped their trams "the idea will
never last" - Melbourne has the best network I have seen
anywhere for trams, and they polute very little(except
    visually).
For night life Melbourne always had live bands and shows,
Sydney was bugger all. In Sports Sydney talk a lot about
there style of footy (Rugby League) being the greatsest game
in the world and they think a crowd of 10k or more as a
    great crowd.
Melbourne talk about Aussie Rules and we reckon a crowd of
10k is a bloody disaster. If you were going to set-up a
    sports business I'd back Melbourne.
People groan about the weather in Melbourne but as a wise
Canadian said to me once " If you don't like the eather
right now, stick around half an hour it'll change".
Would I give either a big miss, Hell NO they are both great
cities in their own way and will leave a lasting impression.

  5. Melbourne Added by: jc

I live in Melbourne and have been to Sydney on many
occasions. I love Sydney for a holiday especially as I have
always stayed on the North Shore in aplace that looks over
the Harbour Bridge. The ferries are wonderful, The Rocks
are great. Melbourne is still my favourite.
Melbourne has great things like wonderful big gardens, good
coffee, great restaurants and the trams(check out the free
tram:the CIty Circle) It was proven a few years ago that it
rains more days in Sydney then in Melbourne.
Melbourne is easy to negotiate because it was a planned
city by a surveyor(god Bless my bretheren) Whereas Sydney
    is a nightmare.
In the words of a fairly dodgy Melbourne (although Aussie)
icon Ian 'Molly' Meldrum. 'Do yourself a favour' and visit
    both
PS if you are from a country that watches Neighbours you
can go to the Neighbours crt. Kick arse

  7. Both are Crap Added by: Crapless
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 14:39 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Melbourne & Sydney...both have crappy weather, crappy
    people, crappy everything!
Go north young man! To the land of rednecks, canetoads, and
flies. Ah yes.... paradise. Crappy people need not apply.

  8. my humble opinion Added by: peter p
[Timestamp: Tue 18 May, 9:52 Tasmanian Standard Time]

sydney seems increasingly open to the asia/pacific -
influences, style, cuisine, culture look more towards our
friends to the north and across the pacific. i reckon this
is a good thing, balancing her eurocentric heritage. don't
know 'bout Melbourne: i'll have to dig out my old black
    polo-necks and go see...
    why not visit both?

  9. Pronunciation Added by: Richo
[Timestamp: Wed 19 May, 17:45 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Nobody from outside Australia EVER gets the pronunciation of
the word Melbourne right. They always get Sydney right.
Therefore Sydney is the better city. QED. (By the way the
correct pronounciation of Melbourne is "shit-ole").

  10. Why? Added by: John McD
[Timestamp: Wed 19 May, 18:52 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Why do you want to know? Areyou coming here as a traveller
or for a working holiday? If you plan to live for any
length of time in one of the two cities, it might help to
know that living in Melbourne is much cheaper than Sydney,
for accommodation, transport, food and entertainment, but
the money you can earn is the same in both cities, so
Melbourne has a definite economic advantage.
Yes, it's colder in winter in melbounre, but it's hotter
though much less humid in Melbourne in summer than Sydney.
Sydney's harbour is beautiful, but Melbourne has some less
    obvious charms.

  11. I Really don't Care Added by: Adelaide

    MELBOURNE WEATHER
What do you call two straight days of rain in Melbourne?
    A weekend.
What do you call four straight days of rain in Melbourne?
    Easter.
What do you call two weeks of rain in Melbourne?
    Indian summer.
What do you call five minutes of sunshine after 2 straight
    days of rain?
    Monday.
What did the Melbourne native say to the Michelin Man?
    Nice tan.
A newcomer to Melbourne arrives on a rainy day. She gets up
the next day and it's raining. It also rains the day after
that, and the day after that. She goes out to lunch and sees
a young kid and, out of despair, asks, "Hey, kid, does it
    ever stop raining around here?"
The kid says, "How do I know? I'm only 6."
What's the definition of an Melbourne optimist?
A guy with a sun visor on his rain hat.
"I can't believe it," said the tourist. "I've been here an
entire week and it's done nothing but rain. When do you have
    summer here?"
"Well, that's hard to say," replied the local. "Last year,
    it was on a Wednesday."
What does daylight-saving time mean in Melbourne?
    An extra hour of rain.
It rains only twice a year in Melbourne: May to July and
    August to April.
