Please could someone let me know as to whether it is
possible to get a cheap air ticket from Darwin to Perth,
i.e. whether there are discounts available for standby etc.
Ansett quotes have been very expensive.
Thank you!

Generally the only way to get cheap flights on Ansett or
Qantas is to book ahead (at least 3 days). Standby flights
are ridiculously expensive. Each carrier sells discount
seats but they are limited. Check out the Ansett web page
as they have some specials going until the end of June.
If you're a yank and want to make a couple/few domestic
flights, check into the Quantas Boomerang Pass that you
have to purchase in the States before a trip.
The major carriers in Australia don't sell stand-by fares as
they do on the States, however the regional airlines often
do (eg. kendall airlines). I suppose that doesn't help you
much through...My suggestion would be to check the notice
boards of backpacker places all over Darwin. You're sure to
find somebody trying to sell off a ticket to Perth.
