We (couple) have plan to go to Eastern Africa for 5 weeks
(from July 1st). Our basic plan: First 2 weeks "normal":
Safari from Nairobi (In rented car) - Masai Mara, Serengeti,
Ngorongoro, Arusha, Amboseli, Nairobi. Then we gone try Air
Zimbabwe to Harare and Victoria Falls and there we have
dilemma:
We would like to visit S Luangwa NP in Zambia and take
TAZARA train to Dar es Salaam. (Then, time permitting,
visit Zanzibar, Mombasa and Lamu). We cant find any reliable
information how to go from Livingstone to S. Luangwa NP and
then to Kapiri Mposhi - starting point for the TAZARA train.
Also I have heard that in order to travel together (w/women)
on the train we have to take coupe (?) that is hard to get.
I dont know how often the train run and if it is safe and
reliable. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated.
Also we are looking for travel companion as well.
Andre

It all sounds pretty ambitious for 5 weeks....Anyhow,
TANZARA runs at least one train every 48 hours, but
generally once every 24 hours. Some are slow trains, some
are 'Express trains'.....I'm afraid I can't help you though
    with the 'coupe'!

Hi, it┤ll take you 3 days to go to Mfuwe from Livingstone, go to Lusaka, stay at cha cha cha Backpackers, not on cha cha cha road. Tel.: 260-1-222257 with free pick up , taxi driver┤s also wait at bus station to get you there, go with RpS bus (they know all about it in the bp) to Chipata. Depending how long it takes to get there, you will get a pick up at the market, but it is more likely that you will have to stay overnight. Chrystal Springs motel is not really cheap but nice owner plus there is no cheaper accomodation. Make sure that the pick-up brings you all the way in the camp as elephants run around all over the place and it is dangerous especially in the dark. If you have more questions, mail me I have been there twice last year.
