This July my wife and I wanna travel from Johannusburg
through Zim, Bots and Nam to Cape Town. Should I rent a 4
wheel drive car or is a normal car enough for this trip?
Wich company has the best offers and is reliable?
THANKS!!!!!! Paul & Astrid The Netherlands

A 4x4 is nice when in the Parks to spot animals. However,
a Volks (Golf) is fine and quite common on the roads and in
the parks. I drove a Beetle throughout SAfrica and it was
fine - just watch out for the potholes. Even Namibia is
    fine on the secondary roads

I not agree with Paul we went on the same holiday, and we
had a 4x4 & it was best. Best to see animals, best to see
places. Roads bad in some places. Chobe NP in Botswana
needs 4x4 and is really good place to visit.

If you want to travel trough these four countries you will
be one your way for quite a while. Car rental (both 2WD and
4WD) is expensive in South Africa. If you want to get the
car in Jo'burg and return it in Cape Town you probably need
a rather big (and more expensive) rental company.

Since you're traveling in July the roads at least will be
dry. I think a Chico (Volkswagen Golf Model II) will do but
doesn't give you much comfort or fredom. Indeed you need a
4WD for *some* National Parks. Please that a lot of places
you probably want to see can better/only be reached by a
    4WD.

Depending on the time you planned for this trip you might
consider buying a car and sell it afterwards. If you want
to get an idea of prices: http:www.junkmail.co.za
    -
If you want to rent a car you should ask a backpackers
lodge for advise. They usualy have good contacts with
rental companies. A lot of the backpackers lodges have web-
    presence nowadays.

Don't hesitate to mail if you have more questions.

If I were you, I would contact Lynda at Leisure Wheels 4x4
    hire. e-mail leislink@iafrica.com
She can give you all the help you need, and I'm sure the
    price is o.k.
We rented a 4x4 by her i january, ad got a fantastic
    service.
    Give her my regards.
    Kurt and:
ps. To answer your next question: No, I do not make any
money by recommending her. I am just a very satisfied
    costumer.
