Hi!
Does anyone have any useful advice about road conditions through Nxai Pan, Makgadigadi Pans, Savute, Chobe, Moremi, in Botswana? I'm on an independent 4x4 trip this August/September.
Likewise, any info on roads in Kaokoland/Damaraland in northern Namibia would be useful.
Any must sees?
Thanks,
Adrian

Been there last July. Road conditions: really bad, you
definitely need a 4x4. Be sure to have enough fuel with
you: at least one full jerry can, two cans if you are
planning to travel from Moremi reserve to Chobe N.P.
You'll find the worst road in N'xai Pan, I mean the road
from the main road (tarred) to the park, inside the park
it's easier. We got stucked in the sand there, and we had to
be rescued from another jeep. Later we discovered that there
are many detours from the road to avoid the deep sand
stretches, so I suggest you to take every detour you'll
find.In Moremi and Chobe it's a little less difficult
because the ground is harder. Have a wonderful trip!

Same for Kaokoveld. Been there about a year ago. Bring at
least two spares, petrol and a lot of drinking water. If
you get stuck, it could take a while before you see anybody.
Don┤t know the road conditions in the last months. Best
check with a local tour operator.

An excellent book to take along with you is Andrew St.
Pierre-White's "The Complete Guide to a 4x4 in Southern
Africa". This book is full of invaluable info. on dealing
with problems, kit, vehicles etc. He's also written a guide
to 4x4 trails in Southern Africa.
    His web site is www.4xforum.co.za
If you haven't driven a 4x4 off-road before you should try
and attend one of the courses run in SA.
    Hope this helps
    Dave
