I was wondering if any fellow African travellers out there
could assist me. At the end of June '99 I will be
travelling to Vic. Falls and staying at the A'Zambezi River
Lodge. Due to my fixed finances I need to be able to budget
properly. If you can give me any idea of how much a lunch
or dinner would cost, or any other hotels or restaurants
outside of the lodge, please contact me.
Thank you.
PS: if you know anything about the price of beer it would
help too.

  1. Meal prices - Victoria Falls Added by: Louise (patmc@az.com)

Just returned from a trip to Botswana ending up with a day
in Victoria Falls. We stayed at the very nice Ilala
Lodge. Lunch and dinner (steak) and drinks came to the
grand total of $35 for the two of us. Beer was 75 cents.
The exchange rate is great and so is the shopping. I would
think that you could eat even more cheaply than what we did
    at the hotel. Enjoy

It's true. .75 zambezi lagers! Castle beer is cheaper but
a bit rougher! You can eat for under $10 a day easy! For
an incredible experience, try Carnivore. For US$17.50 you
can get a traditional style feast. All you can eat and
drink! It starts with apetizers including dried antelope,
mapone worms (you HAVE to try one!!:) ) Then the meats
included the night we went were kudu, wartehog, beef,
osterich, crocodile and bunch of other stuff I can't
remember. They offer vegan stuff if you are so inclined.
The coolest part is that there is a crocdile farm and lions
on the premises. Too cool! Awesome experience. Boma is
also recommended. Now if you want to meet the local color,
rafting guides, hunters, etc. make sure you check out a bar
called Explorers. Getting to Vic Falls will be your
greatest expense, once there you will be amazed at the
prices. (Invest in the us$90 bungi jump. 111 meters. It
was beyond incredible and if you price it per inch it's the
cheapest one you can do!) Getting into Vic Falls was a bit
expensive us$10 so pack a lunch (and umbrella) and spend a
lot of time there! There is a path behind Vic Falls Hotel
that leads right to the falls so you don't need a taxi.
The veiw from the hotel of the Zim/Zambia bridge is a great
photo op. Walk straight through the hotel to the rear and
down the steps to the flags. The path goes to the left to
    the falls.

If you are paying the above prices you are at a tourist rip-
off place. For Z$200 (US$5) you should be able to eat like a
king - the locals think Z$100 is too much for a 3-course
meal!! But it is Vic Falls, so shop around.
