Water woes

I am thinking of going to Africa with the Peace Corps next
year and would also like to travel as much as possible
around Africa and into Asia. Would it be necessary/useful
to get a water purifier/pump? I am planning a backpacking
trip in Oregon this weekend and there's a PUR pump on sale
at REI but mostly i am thinking ahead to my future
travels... How do people deal with drinking water when
travelling in the third world?

If you have room, I say take a pump. I like the Pur pumps,
especially the ones that filters and treats the water (with
iodine). You probably will not always need it, but for the
occassional time you will need one, it is great to have
it. On my last trip to W. Africa, I carried one, but never
needed it. However, the prior year on a trip in Asia, I
needed it for camping up in the mountains of Pakistan and
Tibet, and never got sick from drinking dodgy water thanks
    to the small water filter/purifier.
