TRAVEL ALONE IN AFRICA

This topic was created by PAT

Till now is only a dream as I've got the idea that Africa
is not easy and not cheap.
But since I've the opportunity to ask to other travellers
their experiences, I hope you can help to change my mind.
I really love Africa(excluding the north) expecially black
Africa/animal's africa.
I'm a woman and I usually travel alone and with a really
low budget, that's my problem..
Please give me an idea of of budget per day, and if there
are countries where life is less expensive (for example in
Indonesia you can live with 5USD a day all included, but
just if you moove to Malaysia with that amount you do
nothing..)
How ease or difficult is to moove around with public
transport, are there home stay etc..
Yr help will be really appreciate.
I've already been to kenia but with a frend and with a
hight budget, and to Senegal but I did not experience to be
alone and backpack..
Thanks

I just got back from 6 months in Tanzania. I was with an
other woman (I am a woman too,,,) so the costs were a
little less, but I rarely spent over $10/day for everything
(food, transport, accomodation, beer, gifts). AS a single
you will pay a little more for accomodation but on the
mainland that is still only about $3/night US. There are
few budget travellers there (I don't know why) but all is
cheap, we were never hassled but welcomed and fed and given
places to sleep for free an aweful lot. Seeing the animals
is expensive but you can budget them down to around $90/day
US (otherwise you can edo all else easily do for $10/day).
Zanzibar is a bit more expensive for a room (US $6/night)
but you have the option of cooking for yourself....give
yourself $15US and you will be having pina coladas on the
beach with all the other rich folks......
GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO

Africa is really cheap and a totally easy place to travel,
although white people will find themselves getting
overcharged which can make it more expensive, so watch
out. Busses, trains ETC are a brilliant and cheap way to
travel, (bus in Zambia- $4 for a 12 hr journey-very slow!)
and on trains you can splash out to first class sleeper on
long journeys which costs hardly anything. Camping is a
much cheeper way to travel, although backpackers are not to
expensive at all, especially in Malawi, although further
down south they get more expensive as does everything else.
If you are a single female traveller you should be very
careful- read the articles on single female travellers- not
to put you off but so you are aware of the dangers as in
any country. You meet so many other travellers that Africa
is generally as safe as you make it- it is the best place
on the earth and you won't look back so GO!

I just returned last week from a tree month trip from
Ethiopia to Zimbabwe. I backpacked all the way and
travelled on local transportations. If you don't go out in
larger cities like Nairobi or Dar Es Salam a budget of
US$10-15 is plenty. The countryside is very inexpensive.
Unfortunately, in Tanzania the train and boat fares doubled
this year so expect to pay a lot more than it's in the
Lonely Planet books. In Zambia and Zimbabwe everything is
very cheap. Drop me a line if you need specific prices for
any of these countries. Good luck and enjoy!
