Can anyone body tell what the Nautral Wonders of the world
are? I know the Great Barrier Reef (Australia) is one and
the Grand Canyon (USA) is another. But what else is?
Thanks

What about Victoria Falls? Is that one?

[Timestamp: Sat 30 Jan, 19:36 Tasmanian Standard Time]

According to an ENTIRE Website devoted to the Seven Wonders
    of the World (http://pharos.bu.edu/Egypt/Wonders/), here
is a list of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:
    .
    The Great Pyramid of Giza
    The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
    The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
    The Colossus of Rhodes
    The Lighthouse of Alexandria
    .
Now here's where things get kookie: According to the above
mentioned site "[s]ix out of seven Ancient Wonders did not
survive to this present day. Human imagination urged poets,
writers, and historians to seek "replacements" for the
fallen monuments. Some proposed a new list for the Seven
Wonders of the Modern World. Others argued that Ancient
civilizations which the Greeks did not know of, erected
monuments that should have been included in the original
list. Wonders such as the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal in
Agra, and the Temple of Angkor in Cambodia are a few
    examples.
    .
"Like the ancient list, the new ones include fascinating
monuments and structures that changed the existing
landscape. However, no single list won unanimous approval
among historians, artists, and architects." The site goes
on to list (alphabetically) some Forgotten,
Modern, and Natural Wonders, presummably proposed by the
above mentioned poets, writers, and historians:
    .
    Forgotten Wonders
    .
    Abu Simbel Temple in Egypt
    Angkor Wat in Cambodia
The Aztec Temple in Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), Mexico
The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines
    Borobudur Temple in Indonesia
    The Colosseum in Rome, Italy
    The Great Wall of China
The Inca city of Machu Picchu, Peru
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
The Mayan Temples of Tikal in Northern Guatemala
The Moai Statues in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile
    Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France
The Throne Hall of Persepolis in Iran
    The Parthenon in Athens, Greece
Petra, the rock-carved city in Jordan
    The Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar
    Stonehenge in England
    Taj Mahal in Agra, India
The Temple of the Inscriptions in Palenque, Mexico
    .
    Modern Wonders
    .
    The Channel Tunnel
The Clock Tower (Big Ben) in London, England
The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada
    Eiffel Tower in Paris, France
The Empire State Building in New York City, USA
The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, USA
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA
The High Dam in Aswan, Egypt
    Hoover Dam in Arizona/Nevada, USA
    Itaip· Dam in Brazil/Paraguay
Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, USA
    The Panama Canal
The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Statue of Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Statue of Liberty in New York City, USA
    The Suez Canal in Egypt
The Sydney Opera House in Australia
    .
    Natural Wonders
    .
    Angel Falls in Venezuela
The Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada
The Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia
    Iguaτ· Falls in Brazil/Argentina
    Krakatoa Island in Indonesia
    Mount Everest in Nepal
    Mount Fuji in Japan
    Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
Niagara Falls in Ontario (Canada) and New York State (USA)
    Paricutin Volcano in Mexico
    Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe
    .
    Fascinating.

The internet should be one of the Modern wonders of the
    World, don't you think?
And anyway, back to the original point about the Great
Barrier Reef - I need to go diving for a couple of weeks to
get my PADI certification. That'll be in March. Is the
GBR the best place to learn? Also considered Thailand,
    Carribean, South Africa?
    Any ideas would be welcome.

  19. What's so Great? Added by: Trevor
[Timestamp: Mon 1 Feb, 2:00 Tasmanian Standard Time]

OK, so why is the Great Barrier Reef so great? I've got a
friend who'll be a diving instructor in Cairns and he's
invited me to go diving there. Now I wouldn't mind meeting
up with my friend again but I'm wondering how much about
the Great Barrier Reef is hype. I've dived in Phuket and the
Bahamas. Is it that much more impressive? And I've read
that it's being bleached. How bad is it and can it recover?

  20. great Added by: wombat
[Timestamp: Mon 1 Feb, 2:47 Tasmanian Standard Time]

The name Great Barrier Reef was used to describe the fact
that the reef was a "great barrier" to Capt. James Cook and
other explorers in their attempts to explore the eastern
coast of terra australis. The immense length of the reef
kept getting in the way of their efforts to get from the
Pacific ocean to the land seen in the distance; and also to
get back to the ocean and home again afterwards.
The term great therefore is not used in the modern sense of
"oh wow, fantastic!", but refers to it's size - which is
    indeed great.
However, if you ever visit and dive on the reef that hasn't
been eaten by the crown of thorns starfish, you will indeed
say "great! - and wow, fantastic" ........etc

people; than you can eat cheap lobsters and barracudas...

  24. lucky you Added by: firedragon
[Timestamp: Mon 1 Feb, 10:54 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    to knowitall:
If you are able to go to any of those places to learn to
dive, you are very lucky. I learned to dive in Kona,
Hawaii, and it was wonderful. On a recent trip to
Australia, I was only able to snorkel on the reef and I'm
sure that was a pale comparison of what diving would have
been. My suggestion to you is to decide what you want to
see while diving and then check the internet and brochures
for the best spots to see what you want.

If you intend to go diving on the Great Barrier Reef I
would suggest that you *not* go and see Vic Hislop's Shark
Show before hand, other than that it is truly a wonder.
    Like stepping into another world!

  26. the red sea man !! Added by: olivyeee (olivyeee@aol;com)
[Timestamp: Mon 1 Feb, 15:14 Tasmanian Standard Time]

you should go to the red sea in egypt.
Dahab for good grass, the fantastic Blue Hole and so many
    other good places there.
    The light is incredible..

  27. under the deep blue sea Added by: tigger
[Timestamp: Mon 1 Feb, 15:32 Tasmanian Standard Time]

diving! If you want to learn, I suggest Koh Tao in
Thailand or Honduras. They ought to have the equivalent of
the Great Barrier Reef but much much cheaper.
Alternatively if you want to see absolutely fabulous diving
    - go to Asia - a place called Pulau Sipadan. Of the east
coast of Borneo. The divers there used to say that "what
you can see in the Maldives in one week, you can see in
Sipadan in one day". However, do not learn in a place that
is too good cos your expectations will be far too high from
then on. (I learned in Canada - get through that and you
    can dive anywhere!)

Am getting ready to ge across the U-fucking-S on a Honda
CB750, and would like some feedback. Leavng in March from
Tallahassee, Florida, and going mostly west on scenic
byways, throughout Texas, then up through Colorado, down
through Vegas, to LA, and then up to and hopefully through
Alaska. My main concerns are time and money ($). If
anyone's done a similar trip and can lend some cool info,
incl. places to camp (Nat'l. Forests, etc), it would be
appreciated. We'll mention you in our book!! E-mail to
