London Marathon 1999

This topic was created by Aussie Mark

I am planning to run in the London Marathon in April 1999. Can anybody help me out with some logistical advice about accommodation and transport difficulties due to the huge number of runners and spectators. As I am coming over from Australia I will be planning to stay somewhere near the start or finish for a few days before and after the race. Any suggestions?

i lived in London (before i started travelling_ just a few
miles away from Blackheath Common - where the race starts.
Blackheath is really expensive in terms of accommodation -
so you'd be better off staying in one of the places nearby
such as Lee or HitherGreen (You can walk to Blackheath from
here - but its a few ks and i suppose woth 26 miles to run
    youd want to avoid that)
anyway - on the day of the marathon - all trains are free
for runners - so you wont have much problem getting there -
you'd be better off stayijg somewhere near the finish !!

Include 2 International Reply Coupons, indicate that you are

  8. Running as a rhino.... Added by: Huw (Dreme@mindless.com)
[Timestamp: Wed 7 Oct, 6:31 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I've just done the Great North Run, and I've decided that
I'd like a go at the London Marathon (yr2000). Having
thought about which charity do raise money for, I've
decided that I'd like to run for the one which enters
several people per year, dressed in a 30lb rhino suit.
Unfortunately, I've searched the Web, but can't find out
which charity it actually is. Could anyone possibly point me
in the right direction and maybe even supply a suitable
E-mail address for me to write to? I'd be much obliged if I
get any help at all. Thanks.

  13. London Marathon, accommodation & transport Added by: Brendan O'Connor (boconnorhk@aol.com)
[Timestamp: Sun 18 Oct, 6:02 Tasmanian Standard Time]

reference Aussie Marks accommodation enquiry website below
might be of interest, wide range of hotels etc, Travel Inns,
Trave lodge, etc reasonably priced. Travel Inn at London
County hall currently offering room @ ú55.00 per night up to
4 sleepers per room, better vaue for families.
    http://www.uk.aol.com/channels/travel/hotels/
County hall is near Waterloo which provides direct rail link
    to start.
Travel is not free to runners depite earlier letter, there
is a free " get you to the finish" service for runners who
    have to drop out.
Travel service to start is good by rail, I wouldnt worry too
much about being close to start or finish, I live in Ricmond
in SW London and have run 1995 7 1996 London marathons,
injured in 97 & 98 but hope to run in 1999, Uk entries will
not be confirmed until near Christmas. I travelled to start
by bus to Charing Cross station and thence by train, about
half an hour Charing Cross to starts at Greenwich and
Blackheath, Organization is very good, if you have a place
you will get detailed information pack.
Your cloths and belonging will be brought by truck to Finish
in the Mall near Buckingham Palace.
    Good luck , it's a great event
    Brendan

  18. Response to aussie mark Added by: James (jattenborough@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Tue 1 Dec, 20:18 Tasmanian Standard Time]

best advice is stay somewhere central. there is a free train
from Victoria station to the start, and the finish is back
    in central London.
It is NOT a good idea to get accommodation at the start, as
youve got a hell of a trek back if you make it 26 miles.

  19. 1999 and 2000 Added by: NAB
[Timestamp: Thu 3 Dec, 21:01 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Domestic entries for the 1999 Flora London Marathon closed
on the 26th October 1998. Applicants will learn next week
whether or not they were successful but it is expected that
over 50,000 will be rejected as the event is heavily
    oversubscribed.
The entry system for the year 2000 will open on the 1st
August 1999. If you have run or applied to run the
event during the last 5 years the entry form, which is part
of a free magazine, Marathon News, will be sent to you.
Otherwise UK residents can get their free copy from most
sports shops. If any one has a difficulty getting a copy
they should contact the London Marathon on +44 171 620 4117.
The official web site is undergoing a complete re-design at
present and the new site will be up at the end of this
    month. It is at www.london-marathon.co.uk
    Good Luck

[Timestamp: Sun 27 Dec, 6:04 Tasmanian Standard Time]

My Son & myself hoped to run the London in 1998 but both
were rejected? 1999 we have one place between us but both
still wish to compete.I have approached a few charities but
have yet been unsuccessful. If anyone can come up with a
place we will both raise money for the charity. I have
quite a few contacts and feel we could do a charity a very
good deed.Last year in the Leeds half we raised in excess
of ú700 in a very short time.

  28. Toilets! Added by: Sandra Bayliss (bayliss.sdmark@cableol.co.uk)
[Timestamp: Sun 31 Jan, 2:02 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I cannot find any information about toilet facilities
for runners along the London Marathon route. As I suffer
from a very temperamental digestive system and am frequently
'caught short' on even short training runs this is a very
real concern for me on my first marathon attempt. Does any
experienced Londoner know if there are toilets available
and, if so, how far apart (in miles!) they are?

Marathon 1999 with much anticipation. I ran last fall in
the New York Marathon. I am also in the process of starting
my own running shop on the Internet selling my own running
designs. I'm always interested in meeting other runners
from around the world who enjoy running as much as I do.
Anyone with ideas about what clothing they would like to
see available or any tips or training advice, please feel
free to contact me. Iam hoping to have my site up and
running by the end of March. I will be flying to London on
April 10th, 99 and returning on April 24th.
