The area around Baw Baw is rugged forested country which opens out onto treeless ridges. On the way up to Mt Hotham, high in the Victoria Alps, I enjoyed wild snow and rain storms, gorgeous sunsets and cold dawns. I didn't see a soul for 16 days. The solitude elated me; all of this space to myself in a world so usually full, so fast paced. The perfection of skiing the knife edge of the Crosscut Saw, telemarking through knarled, marbled, old snowgum forest. These are the prettiest trees in the world to ski amongst, with brightly coloured parrots darting through the branches.

It was a long day to finish at Mt Hotham ski resort, 17 hours and 50km later. I arrived at 11pm craving beer and good food. A friend had the beer and a beef stroganoff: perfect for a vegetarian! next
