Installation and System Requirements

Platforms supported by Templeton

In order to run Templeton, you should have the correct executable for your operating system. Please select your operating system and platform from the list below:

OS/2
Linux for an x86 processor
SunOS or Solaris for a Sparc station
IRIX 5.3 and 6.x for the Iris, Indigo, O2, Onyx, and related systems. This platform is only available by request.
HPUX 10.20 for 700 or 800 series systems. This platform is only available by request.

Other operating systems, such as BeOS, MacOS, DOS with Windows 3.1, or Windows NT, may be supported in the future depending upon customer demand and system availablility.

Templeton's interface has been designed for compatability between operating system; you do not need to learn a new interface when changing operating systems. The current revision of Templeton is text-only (no graphical user interface). We may create a GUI for future releases.

Note: Hard disk requirements are not listed. The Templeton executable is relatively small. However, the data copied from remote WWW sites may be large and you should probably have between 2 and 50 Megs of disk space for mirroring (depending on your usage).

OS/2

System Requirements: OS/2 3.0 (Warp) or later, TCP/IP 2.0 or the IBM Internet Connection for OS/2. HPFS prefered, but it runs fine under FAT -- it just truncate all names to 8 characters.

Required Files:

The Templeton executable: tton.exe. This file should be placed in the tcpip/bin directory. The tcpip/bin directory should be in your path.
The Templeton configuration file: tton.cfg, templeton.cfg or Templeto.cfg. The file with the system defaults should be placed in the directory specified by your ETC environment variable. (Use "set ETC" to display the current ETC directory.)
The EMX runtime libraries version 0.9a or later. This is available via anonymous FTP from Hobbes or OS/2 CD-ROM from the os2/unix subdirectory. Templeton was compiled using:

Please make sure your libraries are revision 50 or higher, using the emxrev.cmd command. Older libraries may cause Templeton to abort.
ANSI display support enabled. To determine the current display status, run ANSI.EXE at the command prompt. To enable the ANSI display, either run "ANSI.EXE ON" at the command prompt or place "DEVICE=ANSI.SYS" in your config.sys. ANSI support comes standard with OS/2.
The testcfg.sys device driver. This comes with OS/2 and should already be installed in your config.sys file.

To run Templeton, type tton.exe at the command prompt. The Pwd64 executable is called pwd64.exe and the Reginfo executable is called reginfo.exe.

Linux

System Requirements: RedHat Linux (2.0.32 kernel or later). ELF support required.

A Linux Slackware (1.2.13 kernel) version is not included in the distribution but can be made available upon request: templeton@bmtmicro.com

Required Files:

The Templeton executable: tton. This file should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin (or your own favorite BIN) directory. You may also wish to create a symbolic link from tton to templeton.
The Templeton configuration file: tton.cfg or templeton.cfg. This file should exist in the /etc directory for the system defaults.
Individual users may use a .ttonrc or .templetonrc configuration file in their home directories.

Release Notes:

For single machine registration, this executable must run with effective super-user access, otherwise, it will only run in unregistered mode. This can be done either by setting the effective user ID or effective group ID of Templeton to match the ownership of /dev/mem.
For example (from our test machine):

Technically, the hostid of a Linux system is the IP address of the primary network interface. Because this "hostid" may change without notice (moving the computer, installing/removing new interface cards, dynamic IP addresses over PPP, etc.) Templeton must access /dev/mem in order to identify a unique host ID. This requirement is only necessary for single host registration, not for registering an IP address or subnet.
Because Templeton may be used to start other applications, it is not recommended to run Templeton as root or from a privileged account. After determining the registration, Templeton sets the effective user and group IDs to match the person who started the program. This is an effort toward system security. Applications started by Templeton run as the user, and not as a privileged user or group.

To run Templeton, type tton at the command prompt. Optionally, the executable may be renamed to templeton.

The Pwd64 executable is called pwd64 and the Reginfo executable is called reginfo in the Linux distribution.

SunOS and Solaris

The SunOS version is not included in the distribution but can be made available upon request: templeton@bmtmicro.com. The Solaris version is included in the distribution.

System Requirements: SunOS version 4.1.3 or Solaris 2.5. (It should work fine in later versions of Solaris, but it has only been tested in version 2.5.)

Required Files:

The Templeton executable: tton. You may wish to create a symbolic link from tton to templeton. The executable should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin directory (or somewhere in your PATH)
The Templeton configuration file: tton.cfg or templeton.cfg. This file should exist in the /etc directory for the system defaults.
Individual users may use a .ttonrc or .templetonrc configuration file in their home directories.

To run Templeton, type tton at the command prompt.

The Pwd64 executable is called pwd64 and the Reginfo executable is called reginfo in the SunOS 4.1.3 distribution.

SGI IRIX 5.3 and above

The SGI version is not included in the distribution but can be made available upon request: templeton@bmtmicro.com

System Requirements: IRIX 5.3, 6.2, 6.3, or 6.4

Required Files:

The Templeton executable. For IRIX, use tton. Executables for other IRIX versions may be available upon request. You may also wish to create a symbolic link from tton to templeton. The executable should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin directory (or somewhere in your PATH)
