Gamma-Ray Bursts

Little is known about Gamma-Ray Bursts, their causes, or precisely where and when they occur. Scientists hope Swift will shed some light on these mysteries by identifying the host galaxies of the GRBs, their redshift, and their locations in the galaxies. It is possible that there may be several types of GRBs with separate causes (possibly collapsing stars or neutron star mergers), and if so scientists will work on categorizing them and their causes. Also, Swift will be able to obtain information about the blast waves of the bursts and how this wave of energy and particles interacts with the intergalactic medium.
