You're not interpreting the picture correctly. Go back and read again how astronomical observations can be funny, how you cannot always make a measurements, even from the best telescopes. Telescope point spread functions and angular resolution limit the information you can get from a telescope image of a point source like a star which is actually smaller than a pixel in the detector.
