J: Monkeys on Yakushima Island, on Seibu Woodpath in the Island's West: 95k
11:00, March 6, 1996 "Seibu Wood Path is a two-lane road. Even after Yakushima Island was designated as a Natural Heritage Site* by UNESCO, there were calls for the road to be widened to four lanes. I don't think people understand what the appellation Natural Heritage Site means. The idea that the ecosystem must be changed to accommodate more traffic is antithetical to our saying that we must protect the Yakushima's various ecosystems, its coniferous forests and thickets. I can hear the noise of the construction from the mountain top. I understand what is happening in the island because the sounds reach me from far away." *Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage |
