Options Menu

The General tab of the Preferences dialog allows you to specify general SIREN options. Following is a description of each preference:

Preference

Description

Disable splash screen

When checked, the SIREN logo splash screen will not be displayed when SIREN starts.

Use Sound Card to Play Back Audio from CDs

Selecting this option enables SIREN to use the system's sound card for music playback. Typically, this option should be selected, however; certain CD drives experience difficulty playing music smoothly through SIREN. If gapping or glitching occurs, clear this check box and SIREN will play directly from the CD drive.

Use system mixer for volume control

Selecting this option will result in the system's volume control and SIREN's volume control to respond the same. When you reduce the volume in SIREN, all of the system sounds will be quieter. Deselecting this option results in SIREN's volume control being independent from the system volume. Then, if you reduced or muted SIREN's volume, you'd still hear your system's sounds.

Use internal Internet Browser

Selecting this option configures SIREN to display an internal Web browser for accessing the Internet when the application requires Web access, such as Get Media.

Download music files directly to music files folder

Selecting this option configures SIREN to attempt to intercept downloads of associated media files and put them in your media files folder.

Intercept Active Server Pages

When SIREN attempts to intercept downloads from Web links that are not "direct downloads" but are instead pages served up by a custom Web server (ASP pages), SIREN performs an extra step to determine file type (streaming file, MP3 download, HTML text). This extra step causes a "sleepy pointer" and may cause sluggish Web surfing or long time outs on certain system configurations. Selecting this option prevents web timeouts on certain systems.

Minimize into system tray

When minimized, Siren will appear in the system tray instead of the Windows task bar.

Allow video to stretch larger

When checked, video will be resized to fill the display window during playback.

Small Tabs

When checked, the tabs will appear smaller, the tab icons removed, and will take up less space on the screen.

Show Automatic Notifications

When checked, SIREN will automatically check for updates and messages from the Sonic Foundry web site.
