Speak in a normal tone and the unidirectional microphone built into the earpiece picks it up and transmits your voice. Because it's in your outer ear, the background noise is blocked -- it's clearer than a handset and easier to hear callers in noisy areas. Doesn't block ambient sounds like a phone ringing.
