Transmeta - "Webslate" Concept

IDEO's conceptual design for a modular computer showcases the abilities of the new Crusoe microprocessor from Transmeta. Transmeta commissioned IDEO to design a portable, modular "webslate" concept to demonstrate potential products enabled by their new software-based chip technology. The webslate incorporates a high-resolution, eight-inch touchscreen for viewing web pages, DVD movies, and more. The webslate offers greater portability and more discreet use than a laptop, and offers a larger, more robust viewing area compared to today's handheld PDAs.

IDEO's concept has at its center a slim, two-layer slate which accommodates plug-in modules for various applications. The modules can be added to any of the four sides for landscape or portrait format, and include a camera for on-the-road videoconferencing, a GPS module for navigation, audio speakers and controls for downloaded music, and modules for game playing across the web. A snap-on cover protects the screen and provides a folding stand for a vertical viewing angle.

Transmeta's Crusoe microprocessor technology is intended for portable computing applications. Crusoe offers distinct advantages over existing chips because it consumes less power, can be reprogrammed for various operating systems, and costs less than other chip technology.
