As much as Mac enthusiasts may like to dog Microsoft, it does have a strong influence in the E-mail and collaboration world. That's not because Microsoft dominates the enterprise market but because its Exchange Server product is scalable, reliable and feature-rich. A little more than a dozen years old, Exchange Server has morphed from its predecessor Microsoft Mail, which worked over a LAN with clients connecting to file servers, into a suite of tools that not only let co-workers collaborate in the office but extends their offices to the Internet and mobile devices. A few companies have jumped onto the collaborative messaging bandwagon and directly bill themselves as alternatives to Exchange Server.
