The Frighteners

Ben says: Peter Jackson isn't a big name in Hollywood yet. You may know him from his gruesome low-budget shocker Bad Taste, filmed in his native New Zealand, as was much of the Frighteners. Jackson co-wrote, co-produced and directed this film and his sure comic touches pervade the movie. It straddles an uneasy line between comedy and horror/thriller, much like Evil Dead II, but is less uneven than that film (and also less scary, it has to be said).

Michael J. Fox gives a very good performance as the harried psychic investigator, but not enough of his character is explored and the fact that he ends up with the good doctor is typical Hollywood loose end-tying. However, there is a very good twist in the tale and if for nothing else, the film should be seen for its absolutely superb special effects. The refraction that the ghosts cause as they pass in front of scenery is flawless and there are numerous movie in-jokes such as the appearance of the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket in a similarly confrontational role. Overall, this is a great movie. Go see.
Ben gives it:yay!yay!yay!yay!duh!
