  8.            NEW ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCED TO PROMOTE ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING

  10.         BIRMINGHAM, AL: The "Disktop Publisher's Association" ("DPA")
  11.     is an association for parties of all levels who share interest
  12.     in the dissimination of information in electronic ("computer
  13.     readable") format. Those eligible for membership include
  14.     authors, publishers, and consumers of on-disk publishing.
  15.     "Electronic publishing," in its broadest sense, shall
  16.     mean the authorship and production for general consumer access of any
  17.     materials which are primarily read by computer and viewed on
  18.     "paperless," "digital," and "on-disk" publishing - includes
  19.     fiction and nonfiction works that are stored and distributed
  20.     on disk or available by modem access on "bulletin board systems"
  21.     ("BBSs").
  22.         Electronic publishing, in this sense, specifically does
  23.     not include programs (which are sets of instructions used by a
  24.     computer to perform other tasks) unless these programs are
  25.     designed to facilitate the reading of written materials.
  26.     Examples might include hypertext authoring programs or text viewers.

  28.                              Statement of Purpose

  30.         The purpose of the DPA includes:

  32.         1. To promote, though improved public awareness, the benefits
  33.     of electronic publishing. These benefits include availability -
  34.     often on a 24 hour a day, on demand basis - of electronic
  35.     publications, faster production time, cheaper cost, easier
  36.     revision and updating, reduced consumption of natural
  37.     resources, and - using appropriate reader software - enhanced
  38.     presentation and readability.

  40.         2. To provide a forum for discussing the unique challenges of
  41.     successfully publishing and marketing disk-based publications.
  42.     Examples might include matching an author or publisher with
  43.     the appropriate medium for a proposed project. Would hypertext be
  44.     best? Plain ASCII? Multimedia?

  46.         3. A matching service will be organized to place authors -
  47.     who may not be interested in complexities of marketing and
  48.     publishing - with publishers who may be willing to assist in these
  49.     commercial aspects. "Writers write and publishers publish" is
  50.     an axiom that applies to electronic publishing as well as
  51.     traditional formats.

  53.         4. To share resources for mass marketing electronic publications.
  54.     Examples might include sharing of costs of mailing publications
  55.     to user groups, etc. DPA will also assist new authors and
  56.     publishers in getting press releases circulated and media
  57.     coverage. Sharing mailing lists with other publishers is
  58.     another possibility open to members.

  60.                              Membership Requirements
  61.  
  62.         The only requirement for membership shall be an interest
  63.     in the advancement of electronic publishing. No fees will be
  64.     solicited during the start-up phase.
