  5. Welcome to Battle Beast, the ultimate fight game. This free 
  6. demo CD gives you a sample of 7th Level's upcoming release.
  7. We think you'll agree that it's "Dead On!"
  8.

  10. INSTALLING THE BATTLE BEAST DEMO PROGRAM
  11.  
  12. You can install a version of Battle Beast to your hard disk so 
  13. that you will not need to have the CD in the CD-ROM drive to 
  14. run the program. To install this version, insert the Battle Beast 
  15. Demo CD in the CD-ROM drive, select the File menu and choose Run 
  16. from the Program Manager. Type D:\HDSETUP.EXE (if necessary, 
  17. replace D: with the letter that represents your CD-ROM drive) in 
  18. the command line and press ENTER. Follow the instructions given in 
  19. the installation program. This version will require approximately 
  20. 15 MB of free hard disk space.
  21.  
  22. To conserve hard disk space, you can choose to install a version
  23. of Battle Beast that will run from the CD (you must have the
  24. Battle Beast CD in the CD-ROM drive to run the program). To install
  25. this version, insert the Battle Beast CD in the CD-ROM drive,
  26. select the File menu and choose Run from the Program Manager.
  27. Type D:\CDSETUP.EXE (if necessary, replace D: with the
  28. letter that represents your CD-ROM drive) in the command line
  29. and press ENTER. Follow the instructions given in the 
  30. installation program.

  32. To start Battle Beast, double click the Battle Beast icon which was
  33. created for you by the installation program.

  35. JOYSTICK SUPPORT
  36.  
  37. If you have a joystick that already works with other Windows 
  38. applications, then you do not need to do anything to use the 
  39. joystick with Battle Beast
  40.  
  41. If you have not used your joystick with other Windows applications 
  42. before, you may need to install a joystick driver. You can use the 
  43. generic Windows joystick driver that is included on the Battle Beast 
  44. CD-ROM. It is recommended, however, that you first try to use the 
  45. Windows driver that came with your joystick. 
  46.  
  47. To install the joystick driver that is included with Battle Beast:
  48.  
  49. 1.  Double click the Control Panel icon from the Program Manager 
  50.     to start the Control Panel application.
  51. 2.  Double click the Drivers icon in the Control Panel.
  52. 3.  Click the Add button to add a driver.
  53. 4.  Select the Unlisted or Updated Driver option and click the OK button.
  54. 5.  Open the JOYSTICK directory (either on your hard disk where you
  55.     installed Battle Beast or on the Battle Beast CD).
  56. 6.  Click the OK button to accept the joystick driver.
  57. 7.  Select the configuration for your joystick from the Game Adapter 
  58.     Setup dialog box and click the OK button.
  59. 8.  Click the Close button to return to the Control Panel.
  60. 9.  Restart Windows.
  61.  
  62. Next, copy the file JOYSTICK.CPL from the Joystick directory (either 
  63. on your hard disk where you installed Battle Beast or on the 
  64. Battle Beast CD) to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.
  65.  
  66. Calibrate and test your joystick by double clicking the Joystick icon 
  67. in the Control Panel.
  68.  
  69. Note: You may need to calibrate your joystick again if you have 
  70. disconnected it from your computer or if you notice the joystick 
  71. interfering with the operation of the mouse.

  74. THE BATTLE BEAST SETUP SCREEN
  75.  
  76. The first time you open the Battle Beast demo program, you will
  77. see a setup screen. Here you can customize various game options.
  78.  
  79. Select the input method for each player (keyboard or joystick)
  80. by clicking on the word below Player 1 and Player 2. 
  81.  
  82. Select the energy units desired for each player by clicking on the
  83. energy units bar. A high number of energy units for a player will 
  84. require more hits for that player to be destroyed. A low number of 
  85. energy units will require fewer hits to be destroyed. You can use 
  86. this option to adjust the game for unevenly matched players. If one 
  87. player is more experienced, he or she could select a lower energy 
  88. number to give an inexperienced player a more even chance at victory.

  90. Deselect Auto Turnaround by clicking on the jumping toad. With 
  91. Auto Turnaround selected your Battle Beast will always turn to
  92. face an opponent. With Auto Turnaround deselected, you will need
  93. to turn your Battle Beast manually. More experienced players may wish 
  94. to deselect this option so that they can attack opponents using 
  95. combination or special moves that can be performed from a reverse 
  96. position.

  98. Select sound and animation options. Turn off some of the extra 
  99. background sounds and animation to concentrate on the fight itself, 
  100. or keep these sounds and animation on to experience the depth of 
  101. Battle Beast.
  102.  
  103. Select a time limit for each fight round. The minimum time allowed is
  104. 30 seconds. The maximum fixed time allowed is 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
  105. You also can select an unlimited time. With this option the fight will 
  106. not be finished until one opponent is destroyed.
  107.  
  108. Click Done to exit the Setup screen and save your selections. Press
  109. ESC to exit the Setup screen without saving your changes.

  111. To view the Setup screen again, press F2 from the Fight Selection
  112. Screen.

  115. THE BATTLE BEAST FIGHT SELECTION SCREEN
  116.  
  117. The Fight Selection Screen is where you pick your next round of combat.
  118. You will return to this screen after each round is completed and the
  119. text screens describing Battle Beast have been displayed. From this 
  120. screen, select two players, one player vs. the computer or computer 
  121. vs. computer (to study up on combat techniques).
  122.  
  123. Once you have made your selection, the battle begins.

  126. STANDARD FIGHT MOVES
  127.  
  128. Below you will find the joystick and keyboard combinations for
  129. combat in Battle Beast. You may wish to print this file so that
  130. you have these moves in front of you as you join your opponent in
  131. combat.
  132.  
  133. You can play Battle Beast using a joystick that works with any
  134. Windows application or your computer's keyboard. Simply select 
  135. the input method for each player in the Setup screen. The following 
  136. list of input commands are for a joystick. The list below does not 
  137. include every move or combination of moves possible for each 
  138. character. It's up to you to find the special and secret moves that 
  139. will allow you to conquer any opponent and to defeat the evil Toadman. 
  140. Good luck, soldier!

  142. Remember to perform the key combinations in the order presented and
  143. close together. For "quick" inputs, tap the direction by pressing
  144. and releasing very quickly.

  204. The following keyboard combinations can be used to replace mouse
  205. movements for certain activities and functions.

  221. TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND COMMON PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

  224. Demo, please read the section below before calling our
  225. Technical Support phone line. By checking the few items listed
  226. below, you may be able to solve any difficulty you are having
  227. on your own.

  236. Problem:
  237.    Battle Beast seems to run slow.
  238.  
  239. Solution:
  240.    As with any program running under Windows, the speed and the
  241.    smoothness of Battle Beast is dependent on the speed of the
  242.    hardware that it is running on. Hardware configurations that affect
  243.    performance are: the amount of memory and the speed of the video
  244.    card, the processor type, the amount of real memory and the transfer
  245.    rate of the CD-ROM drive. While the minimum system configuration
  246.    required to run the Battle Beast is a 486 33 MHz computer with 8 MB
  247.    of RAM, a video card capable of running 256 colors and a double-speed
  248.    CD-ROM drive, the recommended system configuration is a 486 66 MHz 
  249.    computer with 16 MB of RAM. You may be able to improve the
  250.    performance of Battle Beast running on your computer by upgrading one 
  251.    or all of these elements of your computer system, depending on what 
  252.    you already have.

  254. Problem:
  255.    When I try to run Battle Beast, I get a "Not enough memory" message.
  256.  
  257. Solution:
  258.    On an 8 MB system, Battle Beast requires 5 to 10 MB of virtual memory. 
  259.    For instructions on setting virtual memory, please consult your
  260.    Windows documentation.
  261.  
  262. Problem:
  263.   The program does not display properly.
  264.  
  265. Solution:
  266.    Make sure you have a video card running in 640x480 or 800x600 mode
  267.    with 256 colors. Also, make sure that you have the proper display
  268.    driver installed. A display with more colors or running at a higher
  269.    resolution also will work with Battle Beast.
  270.  
  271. Problem:
  272.    The program is working, but I don't hear any sound.
  273.  
  274. Solution:
  275.    Make sure your sound card is installed and working properly. You can
  276.    check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound utility in
  277.    the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in the Windows
  278.    directory and click Test. Also, test to make sure the sound has not
  279.    been muted by clicking the Test button in the Battle Beast Setup
  280.    screen.

  282. Problem:
  283.    The sound or video skips during the program.
  284.  
  285. Solution:
  286.    Make sure you have at least 8 MB of RAM. Also, make sure that an
  287.    expanded memory manager (such as EMM386, QEMM or 386MAX) is not
  288.    reserving memory that Windows and Battle Beast will need to run 
  289.    correctly.
  290.  
  291. Problem:
  292.    I can't get the MIDI files to play.
  293.  
  294. Solution:
  295.    Most sound cards are not set up to play MIDI files unless you 
  296.    have a MIDI peripheral device attached to your computer. To set 
  297.    your sound card so that MIDI files will play without a MIDI 
  298.    peripheral attached, open the MIDI Mapper in the Control Panel
  299.    and select an FM driver from the Names list box. Consult your 
  300.    sound card documentation for the name of the specific driver 
  301.    that your sound card needs.
  302.  
  303. Problem:
  304.    The sound and video are not synchronized properly.
  305.  
  306. Solution:
  307.    Make sure that you are running Battle Beast on a 486 33 MHz or 
  308.    better IBM-compatible computer with at least 8 MB of RAM.
  309.  
  310. Problem:
  311.   The sound breaks up or has a lot of static.
  312.  
  313. Solution:
  314.    You may need to change the DMA setting on your sound card. Please
  315.    check the documentation for your sound card for the proper settings
  316.    and how to change the settings.
  317.  
  318. Problem:
  319.    The volume is too low or too high.
  320.  
  321. Solution:
  322.    You can adjust the volume using the + and - keys within 
  323.    Battle Beast.
  324.  
  325. Problem:
  326.    The program seems to run extremely slow.
  327.  
  328. Solution:
  329.    Make sure that you have a permanent swap file set up in Windows.
  330.    Please consult your Windows documentation for instructions
  331.    regarding your swap file settings.
