  18. DREAM FORGE (tm) is a monthly e-magazine for a thinking and literate 
  19. readership.  Dream Forge, Inc. is seeking Official DREAM FORGE
  20. Distributors (ODFDs) throughout cyberspace.  The ODFDs will sell 
  21. individual copies of the current issue (and back issues) of DREAM 
  22. FORGE to their callers on a pay-by-download basis.
  23.  
  24. The list price of individual DREAM FORGE issues is $2.95.  (All 
  25. amounts are in US dollars.)  As additional online sales technologies
  26. become available, the ODFDs will be encouraged to offer DREAM FORGE 
  27. using these new techniques.
  28.    
  29. Responsibilities of ODFDs:
  30.  
  31.   1) Make DREAM FORGE available to their callers using any
  32.      available online sales technology (e.g. sale by download).
  33.      The ODFD warrants that all DREAM FORGE downloads will be
  34.      counted and paid for on a monthly basis.
  35.  
  36.   2) Promote the availability of DREAM FORGE to all callers
  37.      during the logon process.
  38.  
  39.   3) Resolve any customer complaints related to obtaining
  40.      DREAM FORGE from their system (i.e. broken archives,
  41.      aborted downloads, etc.).  Dream Forge, Inc. will assume
  42.      no liability for any such problems, other than replacing
  43.      any broken DREAM FORGE archive sent to the distributor's
  44.      system by the publisher.
  45.  
  46.   4) Provide a monthly report to the publisher showing the
  47.      download count for each DREAM FORGE issue carried by the
  48.      system.
  49.  
  50.   5) Remit the publisher's share (60%) of all DREAM FORGE sales 
  51.      to the publisher promptly on a monthly basis.  Any credit 
  52.      card or transaction processing fees incurred in selling 
  53.      DREAM FORGE are strictly the responsibility of the ODFD.
  54.      If an ODFD chooses to sell DREAM FORGE for a discount, the 
  55.      publisher's share remains 60% of the official list price 
  56.      of the magazine ($1.77/copy at the list price of $2.95).

  58.   6) Provide a complimentary account on the ODFD system for
  59.      the use of DREAM FORGE staff.  The account need not have
  60.      any sysop privileges, except that it should allow DREAM
  61.      FORGE staff to view the current download counts for all
  62.      DREAM FORGE issues being sold.  The account should have
  63.      all upload and download privileges normally offered to
  64.      those with "free, shareware uploader" status.

  66. Benefits for ODFDs:
  67.  
  68.   1) The ODFD retains 40% of all DREAM FORGE sales ($1.18/copy 
  69.      sold at a list price of $2.95) made, less any transaction 
  70.      fees incurred (see #5 above).  The ODFD also retains any 
  71.      time based fees incurred by any user as they download the 
  72.      emag.  
  73.      
  74.   2) The right to advertise their system as an Official DREAM
  75.      FORGE Distributor.  A logon screen may be (indeed, should
  76.      be) displayed to all callers so identifying the system.
  77.  
  78.   3) A listing in each DREAM FORGE issue identifying the ODFD,
  79.      including System name, primary data telephone number, 
  80.      number of lines, and location of system (City/state/country).
  81.  
  82.   4) A 20% discount on any advertising purchased in DREAM FORGE
  83.      to advertise the ODFD system, or any products or services
  84.      offered by the firm that owns the ODFD.  This discount is
  85.      cumulative with any other applicable discounts.

  87.   5) A 40% discount on a display subscription to DREAM FORGE for
  88.      the ODFD system.  Applies only to a prepaid annual 
  89.      subscription, and is not cumulative with any other offers.
  90.      (e.g. The operators of a 100 line BBS that is an ODFD will 
  91.      pay $597/year to display DREAM FORGE to their callers rather 
  92.      than the normal fee of $995.)

  104.    In the short time since the release of the January issue of DREAM 
  105. FORGE, many sysops have asked about becoming ODFDs.  To save time (a
  106. precious commodity these days) I have created this list of frequently
  107. asked questions.
  108.

  110.  Q) What kind of software is available to take orders/control 
  111.     downloads?
  112.  
  113.  A) Sorry, we don't have the time or inclination to help sysops
  114.     set up their systems to handle online ordering.  If you have
  115.     to ask a question like this, you're simply not ready to become
  116.     an ODFD.  We are looking for established commercial boards as 
  117.     distributors.  Line count isn't important, but you must have 
  118.     experience accepting online orders, or at least online
  119.     subscriptions, to be seriously considered as an ODFD.

  122.  Q) I don't live in the United States.  How do I handle pricing?
  123.  
  124.  A) There is a system used by print magazines in North America
  125.     whereby the magazine covers contain two prices:
  126.                example:  $4.95 US, $5.95 Canada
  127.     This accounts for the fact that the Canadian dollar is worth
  128.     somewhat less that the U.S. dollar (about $0.70 US, in 1/95).
  129.     
  130.     There is no reason why such a plan cannot be used for e-mags
  131.     as well.  ODFDs are therefore allowed to charge the local
  132.     equivalent of $2.95 US in their local currency.  Further,
  133.     Non-US ODFDs will be allowed to charge a premium of up to 10% 
  134.     to recover long distance and currency exchange costs.  The ODFD
  135.     may want to round the price down to the nearest customary price
  136.     point (3.95, etc.) in local units.

  138.     For instance: Canadian ODFDs could charge $4.50 (Canadian) for
  139.     each copy of DREAM FORGE.  ($2.95 US/0.70 = 4.21 Canadian, plus
  140.     10% = $4.63 Candian.  Round down to $4.50 Canadian.  Note that
  141.     given the 0.70 exchange rate factor, a Canadian ODFD could NOT
  142.     charge more that $4.63 Canadian per copy of DF).

  145.  Q) How do I make payments to Dream Forge, Inc.?

  147.  A) Simply mail a check or money order every month to the

  153.     We expect to accept checks online eventually, which would
  154.     allow ODFDs to logon the Dream Forge BBS and pay by check
  155.     without having to mail any paper.  Remember that all checks
  156.     and money orders must be in U.S. funds.

  159.  Q) How would I get the new DREAM FORGE issues?
  160.  
  161.  A) Several ways are available:
  162.      1) By internet e-mail (as a uuencoded file attach).
  163.      2) Logon to The DREAM FORGE BBS and download the new issue.
  164.      3) Via private Fido-technology Tick file echo.

  167.  Q) Can I give sample issues away to my users to entice them
  168.     to subscribe?
  169.  
  170.  A) No, that is what the free demo issues are for.  Beginning
  171.     in July 1995 we will publish a free quarterly (tenatively
  172.     titled DREAM FORGE LITE (DFL)).  DFL will contain the table
  173.     of contents of the previous three DF monthly issues, plus a
  174.     few (very few) sample articles from those issues.  The samples
  175.     will usually highlight any new features added to DF since the
  176.     last quarterly edition.  DFL will be freely distributable the
  177.     same way the sample issues are, so there is no need for ODFDs
  178.     to give away the monthly DREAM FORGE issues.  Actually, you 
  179.     MAY give away the monthly issues, provided you pay Dream Forge,
  180.     Inc. the fee of $1.77 (US) per copy given away.  <g>

  183.  Q) May I print DREAM FORGE on paper and sell it that way?
  184.  
  185.  A) No.  DREAM FORGE is an electronic magazine.  The publisher
  186.     retains full control over distribution format.  If we do
  187.     decide to offer a printed edition or non-English language
  188.     editions in the future, rights will have to be negotiated
  189.     on an individual (per-project) basis.
