Welcome to V for Victory 3.1!
This patch will automatically upgrade your Utah Beach 2.0, Velikiye Luki,
and Market Garden games to v. 3.1 of the V for Victory game system. Please
make certain that you read through the section entitled "V4V 3.1 Pre-Install
Information" before installing the patch. If you experience any problems
during the application of the upgrade, please feel free to call our Technical
Support Hotline at 409-776-2187 (M-F 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. CST).

SECTION 1: V4V 3.1 PRE-INSTALL INFORMATION:
Please note that save games from previous versions of V for Victory will not
be compatible with v. 3.1. Thus, you may wish to finish your save games
before updating and deleting your old files.
It should also be noted that the 3.1 upgrade will not be able to find/upgrade
your V for Victory game sets if they are not all on the same hard drive
(i.e. C: - not C: and D:) or in the same hard drive partition. Thus, please
make certain that all the files from each of your V for Victory gamesets are
on the same hard drive or hard drive partition. If this is not the case,
then you may either simply copy the files onto one hard drive, or re-install
the various games onto the same hard drive.
The 3.1 patch will not update V for Victory v. 1.1 or 1.2 (the original Utah
Beach). If you wish to play your Utah Beach scenarios under the same
directory as your other V for Victory gamesets, then you will need to
purchase the Utah Beach 2.0 Data Upgrade from Three-Sixty ($5.00 - US). The
upgrade may be ordered directly from Three-Sixty via our toll-free sales line
at (1-800 653-1360 US) or (1-800-697-2360 Canada) M-F 9:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m
CST. If you own the Utah Beach 2.0 Data Upgrade then your scenarios will be
updated automatically with this patch.
If you do not own all the V for Victory gamesets (Utah Beach 2.0, Velikiye
Luki, and Market Garden) then the 3.1 patch will patch only those games which
you currently own. If you buy these games in the future then you will need
to run the patch again to make sure that all your game data is v. 3.1 (some
stores still have older versions of V for Victory in stock/on the shelves).
If you have ordered the Utah Beach 2.0 Data Upgrade but have not yet received
it, go ahead and run the patch anyway - when you receive the upgrade you can
install it, and then run the patch again. The program will automatically
recognize your newly patched files and copy them into the directory where
your V for Victory files currently reside.
SECTION 2: INSTALLING THE 3.1 PATCH
Step 1: If you own V for Victory: Velikiye Luki, then you should re-install
this gameset into a directory on your hard drive entitled, "V4V3_1" If you do
not own Velikiye Luki then you may skip this step.
NOTE: If you have not been playing your Velikiye Luki scenarios under your
Market Garden game system, then this step is not necessary.
Step 2: Copy the 3.1 upgrade files (UPDATE.EXE, PATCH.EXE, and PATCH.RTP)
into one of your V for Victory game directories (either Market Garden,
Velikiye Luki or Utah Beach 2.0). If you just re-installed Velikiye Luki
onto your hard drive, then you should copy this file into your newly created
V4V3_1 directory.
Step 3: From within the directory you copied the upgrade files into, type
"UPDATE" At this point the upgrade will automatically search out and find
the gamesets which you own (again, assuming that they are all on the same
hard drive), and copy the appropriate files into your current directory and
update the data to v. 3.1. The update will also delete the old files from
your hard drive, thus saving you hard drive space.
Step 4: After the update is finished (the process may take up to 30 minutes
depending upon processor speed), you will be ready to play all of your V for
Victory gamesets under the 3.1 game system. At this time you may wish to go
into your other V for Victory game directories and delete the remaining files
as they will use up your valuable hard drive space.
SECTION 3: INSTRUCTIONS TO OWNERS OF GOLD - JUNO - SWORD
If you own V for Victory: Gold - Juno - Sword, follow the installation
instructions as described above. Next, enter your Gold - Juno - Sword
directory and type, "UPDATE." At this point all of your 3.1 files will
be copied into your Gold - Juno - Sword directory and be made available
for play under GJS.
SECTION 4: V FOR VICTORY 3.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AND SETUP
V for Victory v. 3.1 now requires that you have at least 2000k allocated to
EMS memory, as well as 615,000 bytes free conventional memory. To make
certain that your system configuration meets these requirements, please read
the the following discussion: (Users of DOS 6.0 should skip this section
and proceed to Section 3.11 - CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM UNDER DOS 6.0 FOR
V4V 3.1)
V for Victory 3.1 requires the following lines to be present in your
CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 2000 RAM
Note to OS2, QEMM, 386MAX, and DR DOS users: These lines are not required
to be present in your CONFIG.SYS file. However, it is necessary that at
least 2000K EMS be available in order to play GJS. Thus, the equivalent
command parameter for each of these various operating systems must be
employed if your current configuration is not yielding enough memory.
This assumes that your DOS directory is located on your hard drive under
C:\DOS. If this is not the case, then you will need to change these path
statements to reflect the proper path name.
If you are not certain if you have these lines in your CONFIG.SYS file, then
from the C:\> prompt you should type <TYPE CONFIG.SYS> <ENTER>. This will
give you a read-out of your current CONFIG.SYS file. If these lines are not
present, then you should next type <EDIT CONFIG.SYS> <ENTER>.
At this point you will be using DOS's EDIT feature to view and edit the
contents of your CONFIG.SYS file. Please type in the following lines at the
beginning of the file:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 2000 RAM
You should also have the following lines in your CONFIG.SYS file:
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=30
STACKS=0,0
If you do not have these lines in your CONFIG.SYS file, please add them in
now. After you are finished editing this file, go to the FILE menu at the
top of the screen and choose SAVE.
Your system should now be ready to play V4V 3.1. However, if for some
reason during play V for Victory crashes with an error message to the
regard of, "Insufficient Conventional Memory" then you will need to
go back and free up some conventional memory (until you have at least
615,000 bytes free). This is typically done by loading device drivers
such as mouse drivers, etc. into high memory. If you are not certain
how to do this yourself, please feel free to call the Three-Sixty Technical
Support Line at 409-776-2187 (M-F 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. CST).
SECTION 4.11: CONFIGURING YOUR SYSTEM UNDER DOS 6.0 FOR V4V 3.1
Before playing V for Victory v. 3.1 please make certain that you have your
system configured to yield at least 615,000 bytes of conventional memory.
To determine how much conventional memory your system is configured
to yield, type "MEM" from the DOS prompt. Examine the line which
reads, "Largest Executable Program Size." If this number is below 615,000
then you will need to increase the amount of free conventional memory your
current system configuration is providing. To do this with DOS 6.0, simply
type, "MEMMAKER." At this point you will be utilizing DOS 6.0's built in
memory optimization utility. Please follow the instructions as presented on
screen. After you are finished using running MEMMAKER, you will need to
insert the following line(s) into your CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 2000 RAM
This assumes that your DOS directory is located in the path as described
above. If not, then you will need to change the path statement as necessary.
To enter the above two lines in your CONFIG.SYS file, type <CD\> <ENTER>
followed by <EDIT> <CONFIG.SYS>. You will now be using DOS's editing feature
to view the contents of your CONFIG.SYS file. Now, simply type these lines
in at the very beginning of the file listing. When you are finished,
choose "SAVE" from the file menu. You must now reboot your machine before
these changes will take effect.
SECTION 5: INTERFACE CHANGES
Supply Bars. You will notice when playing V4V, that the unit data window
has been changed. Now you will see the unit name on top, followed by its
type, with its HQ attachment on the bottom. Between its type and HQ there
is now a colored bar - the left half of the bar indicates the unit's current
supply level assigned by the HQ (Attack, General, Defensive, Minimal, NONE)
while the right half shows the unit's supply state (In Supply, Out 1, Out 2,
Out 3, Out 4). The colors you will see are green, blue, orange, red, and
black with black being the worst.
Restricted Movement. In the same box as described above, you will now
see an orange (or white) letter 'R' in the upper left hand corner. This
indicates that the unit's movement is restricted. This either means that
the unit is part of a garrison or is fixed in place and cannot move.
Temperatures. Negative temperature values will now be represented by
green numerals on both the calendar and sidebar. Thus, a green numeral
"5" would indicate -5 degrees.
The Victory Graph. If you capture a victory location hex during the last
turn of the last day then you will not receive victory points for that hex.
You must hold this hex for at least one turn to receive the allotted
victory points for that particular hex.
Please note that the Victory Graph is no longer representative of the entire
scenario. The graph now logs the last 26 turns of game play.
Velikiye Luki Movement Costs. If the temperature rises above freezing then
units in Velikiye Luki will utilize standard terrain movement costs (as
opposed to LF, HF, DS).
SECTION 6: TROUBLESHOOTING NOTES
Please do not run V for Victory under Microsoft Windows. It was demonstrated
during testing that these two products are not compatible. This is
attributable primarily to the fact that both of these products are very
memory intensive in nature.
When playing against a human opponent, selecting "Handle All Ops" may cause
problems with the game. Please do not select this option while playing
another human.
Please note that V for Victory requires a Logitech mouse driver of 6.0 or
later, or a Microsoft mouse driver of 8.0 or later. Earlier versions of
these drivers may cause erratic mouse movements or system lock ups under
V for Victory.
QEMM users should make certain that they are utilizing MOUSE.COM as opposed
to MOUSE.SYS. The use of MOUSE.SYS may result in erratic mouse movements
or a system lockup.
If your computer's Video Card has 512k of memory and IS VESA compliant, yet
you are still receiving an error message to the effect of, "Your Video
Card Does Not Support Video Mode 0x101..." then you may wish to try one
of the following solutions:
1) Some manufacturer's VESA drivers will not function properly when loaded
into high memory. Thus, try loading your VESA driver into lower memory
(i.e. remove the LOADHIGH statement from the line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file where you load your VESA driver).
2) If you have tried loading all the VESA drivers included with V for
Victory, and you are still receiving the above described error message,
please look through your video card documentation to determine exactly
what VESA driver your video card requires to support video mode 0x101. If
no such driver is mentioned, or included with your video card software,
please contact the manufacturer of your video card and ask for the exact
name of the VESA driver which your card requires to support extended video
modes. Many companies will even send you this driver for free, thus you
may want to request this as well.
3) If you are using QEMM with the Stealth Ram option (ST:M or ST:F), try
adding the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS <your old parameters> XSTI:10 XST:C000
If V for Victory crashes with an error message to the regard of,
"Insufficient Conventional Memory" then please read the section in this
file entitled, "V FOR VICTORY 3.1 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AND SETUP."
If you require assistance editing your CONFIG.SYS file, please feel free
to call the Three-Sixty Technical Support Hotline at 409-776-2187 (M-F 9:00
a.m to 6:00 p.m CST).
