WHAT IS WRITER'S HEAVEN?
Writer's Heaven is a power-packed add-on for the popular
word processing program, PC-Write. An added set of command keys,
in an ingenious arrangement, offers you unsurpassed editing
capability.
With a single keystroke, you can move the cursor or delete
by character, word, line, sentence, or paragraph--in either
direction--without moving your hands from typing position!
Writer's Heaven can double your editing speed--yet it's easy to
learn and use.
This version of Writer's Heaven works with PC-Write 3.0. It
cannot be used with PC-Write Lite.
Here's what registered users say about Writer's Heaven:
"I love Writer's Heaven. It definitely falls under the category
of WHY-DIDN'T-SOMEONE-THINK-OF-THIS-BEFORE?--the hallmark of
genius." Arthur Baxter
"Writer's Heaven is superb." Laurence Vittes, software
columnist, Los Angeles Reader
"It has made PC-Write a worthwhile program for me. I had some
doubts about using this word processor, but now it probably will
become a favorite of mine." Douglas Kaller
"It has changed my word-processing life." Fred Holtby, teacher
"You have made such an improvement on the user interface to
PC-Write that I don't want to use version 3.0 without Writer's
Heaven." Dennis E. Robinson, Compact Systems Consulting
ABOUT SHAREWARE
Writer's Heaven is shareware. In our case, this means
1. We urge you to make copies of Writer's Heaven for others
who might like to try it. Please do not leave out files, remove
documentation, or change the program. There are no other
restrictions.
2. If your shareware copy of PC-Write Macros proves useful,
please register by sending $5. This pays for your use of Writer's
Heaven. It also brings you
-- Technical support by mail or phone.
-- Notice of major updates.
-- News of our other special products for PC-Write users.
Disks that you purchase direct from Simple Productions are
already registered. ("Free trial disks" are NOT registered.)
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 5
Companies and institutions must register for each station at
which Writer's Heaven will be used.
To register, please use the form at the end of this
document. All foreign payments must be in US$, by international
postal money order or similar.
We can provide technical support only for our own products.
Quicksoft provides excellent and inexpensive support for PC-Write
itself. All phone support is at your expense. Please call at
reasonable hours.
ABOUT THIS DISK
The simplest way to print this Guide continuously: Turn on
your printer and insert your Writer's Heaven disk in drive A. At
the A> prompt, type
GUIDE
followed by RETURN (ENTER). This prints out the file GUIDE.
You can also print the file with PC-Write, if you use
PC-Write's default page layout settings, with no left margin.
Here is a list of files:
README Startup info
GO.BAT Batch file to display README
GUIDE Documentation and registration form
GUIDE.BAT Batch file to print GUIDE
HVN Writer's Heaven control file
HVNOFF Control file for Writer's Heaven Off command
HVNHELP Writer's Heaven help screen
HOTKEY.COM Public domain cursor speedup program
HOTKEY.DOC Documentation for Hotkey
INSTALLING WRITER'S HEAVEN
For a quick trial of Writer's Heaven, open a "scrap"
document with PC-Write and press F2, F6. With your Writer's
Heaven disk in drive A, type
A:HVN
followed by RETURN (ENTER).
To install Writer's Heaven permanently:
1. Copy the following three Writer's Heaven files to your
PC-Write working disk or directory: HVN, HVNOFF, and HVNHELP.
To copy all three files from the Writer's Heaven disk in
drive A to a working disk in drive B, the command at the A>
prompt would be
COPY HVN* B:
followed by RETURN (ENTER).
Note: If your workdisk is short of room, you can delete
nonessential PC-Write files like PRINT.TST and CHARS.TST. Or you
can move help or spelling files to another disk.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 6
2. Use PC-Write to call up ED.DEF, the PC-Write edit control
file on your working disk or directory. On a new line at the
BOTTOM of the file, type
!HVN
Note: If the file contains the line "!PR.DEF", make sure the line
"!HVN" comes AFTER it!
Save the file and exit with F1, F2.
Writer's Heaven will now be called up automatically whenever
you start PC-Write.
Please refer to the appendix if you
-- use macros to customize PC-Write
-- use the newer, "extended" keyboard
-- do not already use a cursor speedup program
-- have an "almost-compatible" computer or keyboard
-- print proportional fonts on a laser or inkjet printer
On many computers, Auto-reformatting seriously slows down
PC-Write. You may prefer to leave it off, and instead use our
enhanced and handy manual Reformat Key, Ctrl-O.
THE WRITER'S HEAVEN COMMAND SET
All Writer's Heaven commands are located on the "typewriter
keys," for instant access. There they displace some PC-Write
command keys--but substitutes are provided for all important
ones. (See the Appendix for a summary.)
In the following lists of Writer's Heaven keys, the PC-Write
equivalent keys--if any--are noted in parentheses.

THE UNIT KEYS
There are several sets of command keys in Writer's Heaven.
The first and most important is the Unit Keys. These ten keys
form a command "matrix" that enables you to move the cursor or
delete by character, word, line, sentence, or paragraph--in
either direction--with a single keystroke.
Unit keys with Control will move the cursor, while the same
keys with Alt will delete. Also, left-hand keys move or delete
backward, while right-hand keys move or delete forward.
CHARACTER KEYS
Ctrl-F Character left. (Left Arrow)
Ctrl-J Character right. (Right Arrow)
Alt-F Delete character left. (Backspace)
Alt-J Delete character right. (Delete)
WORD KEYS

Ctrl-U Sentence right. (Shft-Ctrl-Right Arrow, modified)
Alt-R Delete sentence left.
Alt-U Delete sentence right.
PARAGRAPH KEYS
Ctrl-E Paragraph left. (Ctrl-PgUp)
Ctrl-I Paragraph right. (Ctrl-PgDn)
Shft-Ctrl-I Paragraph end.
Alt-E Delete paragraph left.
Alt-I Delete paragraph right.
Shft-Alt-I Delete to paragraph end.
Note: Use Shft-Alt-I in place of Alt-I or Alt-U when deleting
from within a paragraph to the end. This avoids deleting the
paragraph break and any Guide lines between paragraphs.

MISCELLANEOUS KEYS
SYMBOL KEY
Ctrl-W Insert character.
The Symbol Key is used to insert font symbols and other special
characters. It substitutes for the PC-Write Alt-letter commands
displaced by Writer's Heaven.
To insert a special character,
1. Press and release the Symbol Key (Ctrl-W). The Status
Line says "SYMBOL."
2. Press the regular PC-Write key--but with Control or
alone, instead of with Alt.
For example, instead of pressing Alt-B for a Boldface
symbol, first press and release the Symbol Key, then Ctrl-B or
just B. For a hard page break, press and release the Symbol
Key, then Ctrl-T or T.
The Symbol Key provides substitute fingering for other
displaced keys as well. To set temporary margins, press and
release the Symbol Key, then the usual bracket or backslash key.
For commands needed with "almost-compatible" computers and
keyboards, see the Appendix.
OFF AND ON KEYS
Shft-Ctrl-[ Alt commands off.
Shft-Ctrl-] Alt commands on.
Use these keys to temporarily turn off the Writer's Heaven Alt
commands--for instance, before final formatting of proportional
fonts for laser printers, and possibly when recording keystrokes.
(See the Appendix.) Note: These keys work only if the files HVN
and HVNOFF are in your default drive and directory.
HELP KEY
Ctrl-Backslash Writer's Heaven help screen.
This key brings up a help screen for instant reminder of the
Writer's Heaven keyboard. Note: This works correctly ONLY if the
file HVNHELP is in your default drive and directory--BEFORE you
press the Help Key. Also note: Calling up the help screen resets
PC-Write's first bookmark.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 13
APPENDIX
INSIDE WRITER'S HEAVEN
Basically, Writer's Heaven is a special set of "macros"--
PC-Write keyboard redefinition commands--collected in a control
file named HVN. This is a normal text file you can edit. The
macros use PC-Write's own functions, singly or combined, to
create the Writer's Heaven commands.
The "!HVN" line in ED.DEF tells PC-Write to "read" HVN after
ED.DEF, on startup. If you find some keys not acting as expected,
check ED.DEF for all files PC-Write is instructed to read, and
their order of listing. A macro will be cancelled by any macro
read later that contradicts it. For example, if "!PR.DEF" is
listed after "!HVN", the font control lines in PR.DEF will cancel
the Writer's Heaven Alt commands.
PERSONAL MACROS
Your macros in ED.DEF will be cancelled if they are assigned
to keys used by Writer's Heaven. These include all letter and
bracket keys with Ctrl, Alt, Shft-Ctrl, and Shft-Alt. (Ctrl-Alt
keys are not affected.) The ones that beep have been given no
actual commands, but merely made inactive for safety.
To reclaim control of these keys, place your macros at the
end of the file HVN. Or you can place them in a separate file,
and put "!FILENAME" after "!HVN" in ED.DEF.
If you use The Editing Keypads by David Brender (RD 2,
Box 46, Wells Bridge, NY 13859, 607-988-2849), you will find that
Writer's Heaven will run at the same time, without interference
to either program.
EXTENDED KEYBOARDS
PC-Write enables you to swap the CapsLock Key with the right
Control Key on "extended" keyboards. We recommend this with
Writer's Heaven. Just add this line to ED.DEF:
&J:3
Also, you can speed up the key repeat rate on an extended
keyboard with this line:
&K:5
We cannot guarantee that this command line, supplied by PC-Write,
will work on all systems.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 14
CURSOR SPEED
Accompanying Writer's Heaven is a public-domain cursor
speedup program called Hotkey. We're including Hotkey for those
who don't have an extended keyboard (see above) or haven't used
other means to speed up their cursor. We recommend it for use
with Writer's Heaven. We don't know who wrote it, but we're
grateful!
Hotkey is better behaved than most such programs, but has
several minor problems. Once in a while a scroll may "run away"--
just press any key to stop it. Your Insert Key may no longer
repeat properly when held down. With long documents on slow
computers, scrolling may become jagged, because PC-Write cannot
always keep up with Hotkey. (An experimental fix for this is
included in our PC-Write Macros, Volume 2.)
The program file is HOTKEY.COM, and documentation is in
HOTKEY.DOC.
DISPLACED KEYS
Writer's Heaven displaces the following PC-Write commands on
the "typewriter keys":
-- the Alt-letter keys for font and special characters
-- the temporary margin keys
-- the imitation "Wordstar"(tm) keys
-- the Shft-Ctrl and Shft-Alt box drawing keys
Substitutes are provided for the first two groups through
the Writer's Heaven Symbol Key. All important Wordstar commands
are duplicated by Writer's Heaven and/or PC-Write itself.
Writer's Heaven does not replace the box drawing keys--which are
not usable with most printers anyway. (You can still draw boxes
through the Ctrl-F9 menu.)
"ALMOST-COMPATIBLE" COMPUTERS
If you are using PC-Write's ED.SPC file for "almost-
compatible" computers or keyboards, Writer's Heaven will cancel
most of PC-Write's key substitutions. However, you can instead
access these commands through the Writer's Heaven Symbol Key,
Ctrl-W.
The chart shows the STANDARD PC-Write key--not the ED.SPC
reassignment--then the Writer's Heaven key. For the Writer's
Heaven key, first press and release the Symbol Key (Ctrl-W), then
the key listed. DO NOT use Control, Shift, or Alt with this
second key. Please note: If you have no trouble getting the
standard PC-Write keys, ignore the Writer's Heaven substitutes.

RECORDING KEYSTROKES
PC-Write currently won't accept Symbol Key or other two-key
commands in recorded key sequences. To include font symbols or
other special characters in your recordings, use the Alt-keypad
method, or restore PC-Write's Alt-letter commands with the
Writer's Heaven Off Key.
PROPORTIONAL FONTS
If you use a proportional font other than V "variable"--for
example, on a Hewlett-Packard Laserjet or Deskjet--Writer's
Heaven will interfere with PC-Write's ability to format the line
length properly. This is because Writer's Heaven displaces
PC-Write's Alt-letter commands.
To properly format your document before printing, follow
these simple steps:
1. Turn off the Writer's Heaven Alt commands with the Off
Key (Shft-Ctrl-Left Bracket).
2. Mark your entire document by pressing Ctrl-F5.
3. Press F7 to reformat. You may also need to repage, with
Alt-F7.
4. Clear the marking, with F5.
5. Restore the Writer's Heaven Alt commands with the On Key
(Shft-Ctrl-Right Bracket).
