1.1 Using this manual
1.2 Installing the Software
1.3 Licensing and Registration
1.1 USING THIS MANUAL
This manual is designed to function as a basic instruction manual, to
enable you to install the Publisher and make sufficient use of it to
make a proper assessment of its capabilities. The complete instruction
and reference manual including a Quick Reference Guide, a set of
standard style sheets, a Problem Solving Guide, appendices, examples, a
glossary of technical terms and an alphabetical index, is too lengthy
for inclusion on a distribution diskette. A copy of it in printed form
is shipped to all users who register and pay the prescribed licence fee
of US $89.00.
1.2 INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
The Publisher is supplied:
(a) on magnetic media in compressed (or "archive") form, with a built-in
interactive installation program. The Publisher is currently distributed on
the following media: one 720KB 3.5 inch diskette; one 1.2MB 5.25 inch
diskette; or three 360KB 5.25 inch diskettes.
(b) on bulletin boards as three self-extracting compressed files,
RUBICON.EXE, TJ.EXE and RN.EXE. Expanding RUBICON.EXE in the same directory
where TJ.EXE and RN.EXE are located, will give you a directory containing
the same files which are included on diskette in a distribution set.
If you have downloaded from a bulletin board, presumably you have already
expanded RUBICON.EXE by entering the command "RUBICON": otherwise you would
not be reading this. You should NOT expand RN.EXE or TJ.EXE at this time.
If you have already done so, you should DELETE the resulting soft font
files, *.sfp. You should also ensure that the compressed files TJ.EXE and
RN.EXE and the set of files generated by expanding RUBICON.EXE are ALL on
the SAME DIRECTORY. To avoid conflict with the installation procedure,
this directory should NOT be named "RUBICON".
The installation program will install the Publisher on any drive specified
by the user, provided that the designated drive has sufficient space
available. It offers the user the options of installing the Publisher
for LaserJet printers, for Postscript devices, or for both. If LaserJet
printers, or both types, have been selected, the installation program
also provides the options of installing, or not installing, the Rubicon
LaserJet soft fonts. NOTE: There must be no existing directories named
"RUBICON" or "SOFTFONT" on the drive where the Publisher will be
installed.
If you are installing the Publisher from distribution diskette(s), the
first step is to load the distribution diskette (or distribution diskette
No. 1, if there are more than one) into diskette drive `A' or `B', and log
on to the selected drive.
If you have downloaded from a bulletin board and expanded RUBICON.EXE, the
first installation step is to log on to the directory where the files
produced by RUBICON.EXE are located.
In either case, the next step is to start the installation program by using
the command "INSTALL [drive_letter]", where "drive_letter" identifies the
drive on which you wish to install the Publisher. By means of screen
messages, the program will confirm the drive on which the publisher is to be
installed: it will then request the user to specify the printer or printers
for which the Publisher is to be installed, and if LaserJet or both types of
printer have been selected, it will request the user to indicate whether the
Rubicon LaserJet soft fonts are to be installed. If you are installing from
a multi-diskette distribution set, the installation program will issue a
screen prompt whenever insertion of another diskette is needed. Note that
the second and subsequent diskettes in a multi-diskette distribution set
contain nothing but soft fonts, and the installation program will therefore
not call for insertion of these diskettes unless the soft font installation
option has been selected.
The program will automatically create a new directory named RUBICON
containing a copy of the Publisher in normal form. If LaserJet printers,
or both types of printer, have been specified, it will also create a new
directory named SOFTFONT, and if installation of the Rubicon LaserJet
soft fonts has been specified, it will expand the compressed versions of
these fonts, and copy them into the SOFTFONT directory in normal form.
The new directory or directories will be created on the hard disk
specified by the drive letter in the INSTALL command. If no drive letter
is specifed, the Publisher and its fonts will be installed on Drive C.
To use the publisher to publish a text file, you must first use the DOS
command: CD\RUBICON to change to the directory in which the publisher
has been installed, and then enter an appropriate command line to
activate the Publisher, as described in Section 2.
If questions or problems arise during installation, or if you wish to
employ a more complicated installation procedure for sophisticated
users, which is required for certain hardware setups, and enables the
Publisher to be accessed from any directory, please refer to the
Appendix to this Manual, in file MANUAL.APP.
NOTE: 1. When publishing certain documents, the Publisher may need to
have as many as 10 files open simultaneously. Unless it has been
configured to permit a greater number, the MS-DOS operating system will
only permit 8 files to be open at once. If your operating system has
not been so configured, attempting to publish certain documents may
result in an error message to the effect that too many files are open.
If this problem arises, please refer to the Appendix, section A.2.3.
2. If you will be using a SERIAL PRINTER or other serial output
device, or will be using HEWLETT-PACKARD SOFT FONTS, or will be using
BOTH LASERJET AND POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS, after running the INSTALL
program, you should refer to the appropriate sections of the Appendix to
this Manual, in file MANUAL.APP.
The following tags may be used in the default setup file SETUP.TAG, or
in the initialization sequence for a particular document, to specify the
printer model and setup, and mode of printing (Portrait is the default
mode; Landscape may be specified).
<Model= > Printer Model: LaserJet or Postscript
<Port= > Printer Port or Device: PRN (default), LPT1, COM1, etc.
<Landscape= > ON or OFF
<font_path= > Directory containing Soft Fonts, e.g. SOFTFONT
(Note: Landscape printing requires landscape fonts. The soft fonts
supplied with the shareware distribution version of the Publisher are in
Portrait form only.)
1.3 LICENSING AND REGISTRATION
If you have purchased the Publisher from Rubicon Software or an
authorized dealer, you have been automatically registered as a licensee,
and granted a User's Licence which entitles you to
1. Install the Publisher on a computer and use it for all normal
purposes, both private and commercial.
2. Re-install the Publisher if the originally-installed copy is lost or
impaired by human error, equipment failure, etc.
3. Transfer the Publisher to another computer for use for all normal
purposes, provided that the publisher is used on only one computer at a
time.
If you have obtained a usable copy of the Publisher by any other means,
such as copying from another computer, or making an additional
installation from a distribution diskette, you may use it only for
purposes of testing, demonstration or review, and you may make and
distribute further copies only for those purposes. Use for any other
purpose is contrary to law, until you have remitted the prescribed
user's licence fee of US $89 to:
