------------ WELCOME TO PROFESSIONAL WRITE 2.1! -----------
This Trial Disk introduces the features of Professional Write
2.1--the word processor that helps you get your work done
quickly, and produces polished results fast.
---------------------- TO GET STARTED ---------------------
WHO SHOULD READ THIS PRODUCT OVERVIEW?
If you are experienced with word processing, you may want to
read just the following section on "Running The Trial Disk,"
and begin.
If you are not familiar with Professional Write, read all the
information that follows.
If you are a current Professional Write user, you may want to
read the section on the New Features of Version 2.1.
---------------- TRIAL DISK SPECIFICATIONS ----------------
This Trial Disk version of Professional Write 2.1 is just
like the actual product, with some exceptions:
1. You can't save a file.
2. You can print only the first page of a document.
3. Mail merge is not available.
4. Connections to other software files are limited; you
can insert a Lotus 1-2-3 file, but not a Professional
Plan file. You can get Professional Write 1.0, 2.0,
or PFS:WRITE version C files, but you can't get or
save files created with other word processors.
5. The Address Book does not add or find entries.
6. No dictionary functions are provided (spell check or
thesaurus).
The full product does not have these limitations.
------------------ RUNNING THE TRIAL DISK ------------------
After exiting this Overview, you can start the Trial Disk
from DOS in one of these ways:
1. IF YOU HAVE A HARD DISK:
We recommend that you copy the Trial Disks onto your hard
disk. Then, change the default drive to the directory where
you copied the Trial Disks, type PW, and press Enter. (You'll
find complete installation instructions near the end of this
Overview.)
2. IF YOU HAVE TWO DISKETTE DRIVES:
Put the Start-Up Disk in drive A (the Start-Up and Program
Disk if on 3 1/2" disks). Change the default drive to A, if
necessary. (Type A: and press Enter.) At the DOS A> prompt,
type PW and press Enter.
---------------------- NEW FEATURES -----------------------
PRINT PREVIEW - You don't have to print your document to see
the final results. Professional Write 2.1's Preview shows
you a picture of your document on-screen. Preview displays
line and page breaks, the size of fonts, and other text
attributes, so you only need to print your document once.
Preview also displays the area where your Harvard Graphics,
First Graphics or First Choice graphs will print.
SIMPLIFIED TAB AND MARGIN CONTROL - With Professional Write
2.1, it is now easier to change tabs and margins. Using the
pull-down menus, or the speed key, you can highlight text where
you want a tab or margin change. You can set margins on the
ruler or enter numbers in the dialog box.
MORE WORD PROCESSING COMPATIBILITY - Professional Write 2.1
is compatible with more word processors. Professional Write
2.1 now exchanges files with Microsoft Word 4.0, OfficeWriter
6, PFS:First Choice 3.0 and WordPerfect 5.0.
NEW PRINTER SUPPORT - Professional Write 2.1 now supports fonts
for over 24 dot matrix printers.
------------------------ NEED HELP? -----------------------
If you're unsure about what to do next while running the
Trial Disk--just press F1!
Whatever you're doing, you can always get help--right on your
computer screen. When you press F1 for Help, special screens
appear with instructions.
In addition, you can access an on-line manual, the Help Menu,
from anywhere in the program. Just press Ctrl-F1.
---------------------- THINGS TO TRY ----------------------
For a basic tour through Professional Write 2.1, follow these
suggestions. Or, you can explore on your own.
USING MENUS
When you start Professional Write, you see its Main Menu with
three choices. With CREATE/EDIT, you type a new document or
edit an old one. Use SETUP to tell Professional Write what
kind of equipment you have. Choose EXIT to leave the program
and return to DOS.
To choose a menu item, type the corresponding number, or use
the Up or Down Arrow keys to highlight it and then press Enter.
Don't forget--whenever you need help, press F1.
SAMPLE DOCUMENT
A sample document called Sample.ltr is included in this trial.
This document includes fonts and other text attributes that
demonstrate the new Preview feature. Printer 1 is pre-set with
an HP LaserJet +, and Cartridge Z. If you are going to print,
you can change Printer 1 to your own personal printer and use
the fonts supported on your printer.
The sample document also shows how Professional Write
includes Harvard Graphics charts in your text, and how they
will affect your document. Page 2 of the sample document has
the line "*graph ctn.gra*". When you preview the document,
you will see where the graphic image will appear.
CREATING AND EDITING IS SIMPLE
Choose CREATE/EDIT to see an on-screen representation of a
piece of paper. Press F1 to see a list of cursor movement
keys. Try typing a letter--it's as simple as using a
typewriter.
The cursor shows where your typing will appear. You can
place the cursor anywhere and insert text. Don't worry about
pressing Enter at the end of a line. Unlike a typewriter,
Professional Write takes care of ending lines.
USE PULL-DOWN MENUS TO ACCESS FEATURES
Across the top of the Create/Edit screen is the heart of
Professional Write, its pull-down menus. These menus show
features you use to edit, reformat, print, and save your
documents. To see one, press the function key beside the menu
title.
For example, try F4 (for FORMAT), and choose SET HEADER. A
pop-up window appears for you to fill in.
Press F1 and read the instructions. Use the Tab key to move
between options. Press Enter to see your header at the top of
each page.
Try some other FORMAT options, such as setting margins or
centering a line.
QUICK EDITING WITH SPEED KEYS
On the pull-down menus some options have Ctrl key combinations
beside them. These SPEED KEYS let you select frequently used
commands without pulling down the menu.
For instance, Ctrl-W erases a word, Ctrl-L erases a line, and
Ctrl-I inserts a blank line. Try some other speed keys listed
on the pull-down menus.
QUICKLY EDIT BLOCKS OF TEXT
To change a section of text, such as a sentence or paragraph,
mark it as a TEXT BLOCK. Then you can move, copy, delete, or
emphasize the whole block at once.
For example, put the cursor at the first word of a sentence.
Press F3 and select MARK TEXT. Use the arrow keys to highlight
a section of text and then press F10. The TEXT BLOCK
OPERATIONS menu appears, listing the changes you can make to
the marked block. To move the block, choose CUT (delete), which
removes the block and places it in temporary storage. Then
move your cursor to the new location, press F3, and choose
PASTE.
Now try marking a rectangular block to manipulate the columns
of a table. Press F3, highlight MARK RECTANGLE, and press F1
for help.
ENHANCE WORDS FOR EMPHASIS
Professional Write lets you emphasize a word with boldface or
underline. Just move the cursor to any letter in the word, and
press F3. Choose an enhancement and press Enter.
PREVIEW YOUR MASTERPIECE
Eliminate printing multiple drafts with Preview. Preview shows
your document graphically so you can see exactly how your text
will line up. Preview even shows the different sized fonts
you've used to emphasize your text. Press F2 and select
PREVIEW WORKING COPY. Once you're in Preview, you see a full-
screen view of your document. To zoom in, press F2 for OPTIONS
and select CHANGE VIEW.
A feature unique to Professional Write's Preview is the ability
to change fonts within the Preview screen. Simply press F3-
Fonts from the Preview screen, and then select CHANGE FONT.
Professional Write highlights the surrounding text that
contains the same font, and you can select a new font from the
list shown on the screen. Professional Write automatically
changes the font in Preview and display the new sizing, line
breaks, and page breaks.
After seeing all the capabilities of Preview, press Esc to
return to the Edit screen.
PRINTING YOUR FINISHED PRODUCT
When you're satisfied with your document, take a look at how
easy it is to print with Professional Write.
Press F2 to pull down the FILE/PRINT menu. Select PRINT
WORKING COPY to display the PRINT OPTIONS menu. You can accept
the default settings by pressing Enter. If you want to print,
customize the Trial Disk for your printer. Press Esc to go
back to the Main Menu. Choose SETUP, then choose SELECT
PRINTER 1. Press F1 for instructions.
If you do change the printer, you will want to change the fonts
in your document to those supported by the new printer. To
change fonts, mark the text and choose the new fonts from the
Text Block Operations menu.
KEYBOARD MACROS INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY
MACROS are a sequence of recorded keystrokes that you can
replay when needed. You can create macros that type a simple
phrase or perform all the steps in a task. Macros can save you
time and effort.
Each macro is assigned the Alt key and a letter or number key.
You replay the macro by holding down the Alt key and the letter
or number.
Your Trial Disk comes with a sample macro. To try it, place
the cursor at the left margin of your document and press Alt-A.
The macro types a standard ending for a letter. It's handy if
you write lots of similar letters.
ADVANCED FEATURES
Professional Write has more features to increase you
productivity. For example, you can:
Produce professional-quality output with laser printer fonts,
including fonts from the HP LaserJets, Apple LaserWriter,
PostScript printers, or the HP DeskJet. You can also access
fonts for some dot matrix printers. After using SETUP to
select your printer, just mark the text and choose FONTS from
the Text Block Operations menu.
Quickly transfer documents to or from your secretary or
associates who use MultiMate, WordPerfect, OfficeWriter,
WordStar, Microsoft Word, DisplayWrite(DCA), PFS:First Choice
or Wang PC. The documents are converted automatically.
Merge information into your document from other types of files
such as Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, Harvard Graphics charts, or
ASCII files.
Create good-looking tables using rectangular block operations
to move, erase, copy, shift, change fonts, or enhance columns
of numbers or text. Use the integrated row and column math to
recalculate if you change a number.
Enhance your documents with line drawings and boxes.
Find important documents fast with the file-finder, which
searches through the text of all your Professional Write files
to find any word or phrase. Get lists of your files sorted by
filename, extension, date, and size. Identify files with
summary descriptions.
Create and update Address Books, each containing up to 2000
names and addresses, that you can use for the inside addresses
of letters.
Format your document by changing its margins anywhere in the
document, by adding headers and footers, varying the line
spacing, indenting paragraphs, and justifying text.
Automatically find a word or phrase and replace it with another
word or phrase.
Print form letters containing information stored in dBASE III,
Professional File, or an Address Book.
--------------------- SPREAD THE WORD --------------------
Like Professional Write, this Trial Disk is not copy-protected.
Please feel free--in fact, we encourage you--to copy and
pass the Trial Disk on to your friends and associates.
--------------------- WHERE TO FIND IT --------------------

and corporate suppliers nationwide.
----------------- THE PROFESSIONAL SERIES -----------------
The Professional Series products work as a team to provide the
power you need to manage your information and produce top-
quality results, fast.
After you are familiar with Professional Write, you may want
to take a look at the other applications in the Professional

program. You can use it to organize and analyze information,
and produce professional-quality reports. When you pair
Professional File with Professional Write, you can efficiently
produce large sorted mailings and labels.
PROFESSIONAL PLAN combines a powerful, Lotus 1-2-3-compatible
spreadsheet (release 1A or 2) with features from the most
popular add-ons, in one program that is easy to learn and
simple to remember. You can merge its presentation-quality
graphs into Professional Write documents.
PROFESSIONAL LAN PACK, a companion product to the Professional
Series, manages concurrent access to the programs on a network.
Easy to install, learn, and use, the Professional Series is a
solution for sharing productivity software on a network.
------------------ HARD DISK INSTALLATION -----------------
Like Professional Write, this Trial Disk is not copy protected.
To install it on your hard disk, simply use the DOS COPY
command. For example, if you put the Start-Up Disk in drive A
and your hard disk drive is C, type these commands:
C> md pwtrial (Make a subdirectory PWTRIAL)
C> cd pwtrial (Change the default to the new subdirectory)
C> copy a:*.* (Copy the Start-Up Disk files into the new
