  225.            1.0 INTRODUCTION
  226.  
  227.            1.1 WELCOME TO PC-Type II
  228.  
  229.                PC-Type II is packed with features, but is still easy to
  230.                use.  It is sure to have many features you have often
  231.                wished for but could never find in a word processor
  232.                before.  Here is a summary of PC-Type II features:
  233.  
  234.                ∙ MAIL-MERGE - that allows you to do volume mailings.
  235.                  This feature lets you nest separate files with
  236.                  INCLUDE and IF statements.  Source options allow you
  237.                  to use the keyboard input, PC-File+ and PC-File:DB
  238.                  databases, ASCII flat files and comma-delimited
  239.                  (Wordstar) files, as well as PC-Calc data.  You may
  240.                  even perform date and time arithmetic.
  241.  
  242.                ∙ FAULT FINDER - that catches misspelled words and
  243.                  offers substitute suggestions.  It will also catch
  244.                  the same word used more than once in succession.  It
  245.                  includes a dictionary of about 100,000 words to
  246.                  which you can add your own words and delete words
  247.                  you don't want.  There is even a program to help you
  248.                  with your newspaper Crossword and Scramble puzzles.
  249.  
  250.                ∙ GRAPHING - you may take your tables of data to
  251.                  create bar and pie charts or line and scatter
  252.                  diagrams.  Multiple variables may be graphed and
  253.                  accumulated and even displayed logarithmically.  It
  254.                  truly offers numerous possibilities.
  255.  
  256.                ∙ MULTIPLE WINDOWS - you may work with up to ten
  257.                  different files in up to four different windows, or
  258.                  look at different parts of the same file in
  259.                  different windows.
  260.  
  261.                ∙ HELP - is context sensitive and provides a good
  262.                  overview of PC-Type II features.
  263.  
  264.                ∙ MENUS - can take you through nearly every PC-Type II
  265.                  function.
  266.  
  267.                ∙ COMMANDS - are available for the power users.  Up to
  268.                  ten of the last commands are saved for later reuse.
  269.  
  270.                ∙ CALCULATE - equations as commands or values in your
  271.                  text.  Even hexadecimal entries are supported.
  272.  
  273.                ∙ DRAW - boxes and lines.  PC-Type II will automatically
  274.                  insert the intersection characters.
  275.  
  276.                ∙ KEYSTROKE MACROS - which memorize your keystrokes
  277.                  may be saved and modified.  These macros may call
  278.                  other macros or call themselves.  Twenty-five macros
  279.                  can be active at a time.

  282.                  within your files, as well as single, double, and
  283.                  triple spacing.

  285.                ∙ MOVE and COPY - lines, paragraphs, sentences, words,
  286.                  and best of all, BLOCKs of text within or between
  287.                  files.

  289.                ∙ SEARCH and REPLACE for both case sensitive and case
  290.                  insensitive targets.  You may even restrict the
  291.                  columns to be considered.

  293.                ∙ ALIGN and SORT - columns of data.
  294.  
  295.                ∙ DOS - commands generally available from within
  296.                  PC-Type II.
  297.  
  298.                ∙ LINE NUMBERING and STRING REPLICATION - may
  299.                  be inserted in lines as defined.

  301.                ∙ WHOOPS - key to recover modified or deleted lines.
  302.  
  303.                ∙ DATABASE and SPREADSHEET DATA - may be pulled
  304.                  in as required from PC-File+, PC-File:dB and PC-Calc+.

  316.                  may be turned on and off as desired.

  321.                ∙ PRINT - features have been streamlined.  You may
  322.                  even print marked areas of your files.  Up to 19
  323.                  Escape code sequences may be defined for your
  324.                  printer.

  326.                ∙ DATE and TIME - stamps are easily accessed.

  328.                ∙ BOOKMARKS - may be placed in four separate locations
  329.                  per file and moved as wanted.

  331.                ∙ CROSSHAIRS - allow you to visually line up columns

  334.                ∙ COLORS - may be defined per user's tastes.

  393.            1.2 MANUAL LAYOUT
  394.  
  395.                This version of PC-Type II is distinctly different from
  396.                previous versions.  While every effort has been made
  397.                to keep the flavor of previous versions, there are
  398.                many new features and ways of performing functions.
  399.                This manual should assist you in making the most of
  400.                PC-Type II.
  401.  
  402.                The manual is broken into three main parts.
  403.  
  404.        Part I: This part should be read in its entirety.  It is here
  405.                that the installation instructions and the overview of
  406.                PC-Type II are located.  This part does not go into a lot
  407.                of detail about the various functions and programs,
  408.                but is meant to give you a feeling for what can be
  409.                done and a general feeling of how to do it.
  410.  
  411.                Section 2.0, "GETTING STARTED", describes many of the
  412.                features of PC-Type II you should become familiar with.
  413.  
  414.                Section 3.0, "USING PC-Type II", takes you quickly
  415.                through the general technique of using PC-Type II for
  416.                your day to day needs.
  417.  
  418.       Part II: This is the heart of the document and it is here that
  419.                each function and program provided is described in
  420.                detail.
  421.  
  422.                Most PC-Type II functions may be performed through menu
  423.                selections.  We therefore direct your attention to
  424.                section 5.0, "PC-Type II Functions".  This largest
  425.                section in the entire manual, is set up to match the
  426.                menus themselves.  Each new sub-menu contains the page
  427.                numbers describing the options of the menu.  You can
  428.                find your way through the manual just as you would
  429.                through the menus.  In addition, a "Menus Summary" is
  430.                provided in section 1.0 of this part.

  432.                Other sections define PC-Type II commands, parameters to
  433.                use when starting PC-Type II from DOS, Mail-Merge, and
  434.                other programs to be used in conjunction with PC-Type II.
  435.                A keystroke summary is also provided.

  437.      Part III: This part contains all the appendices of the manual.
  438.                Here you will find a Glossary of terms, PC-Type II
  439.                technical information and performance hints, and an
  440.                Index.

  449.            1.3 PC-TYPE+ COMPATIBILITY
  450.  
  451.                The previous version of PC-Type, (PC-Type+), is
  452.                compatible with the new PC-Type II.  However, if a
  453.                PC-Type+ file contained Special Lines, print markers,
  454.                or relative or absolute page breaks, then a preamble
  455.                must be placed in front of the old file so that these
  456.                special markers will be recognized.
  457.  
  458.                The CNB.BAT file is provided to place this preamble in
  459.                front of your old PC-Type+ files.  In addition, the
  460.                file extension of these files will be changed to PCT.
  461.                (See section 7.7 in PART II of this document for a
  462.                description of the conversion process.)
  463.  
  464.                The new PC-Type II distinguishes between a document file
  465.                (which has an extension of .PCT) and a standard ASCII
  466.                file which has any other (or no) file extension.
  467.  
  468.                Remember that unless your old file has the markers
  469.                mentioned above, then no conversion is required at
  470.                all.
  471.  
  472.                In general, the new PC-Type II will be able to read any
  473.                standard ASCII file (a file containing lines of
  474.                information with a carriage return and line feed after
  475.                each line).
  476.  
  477.                The program CNVPRN.EXE is also included in your
  478.                utilities to convert PC-Type+ printer escape codes to
  479.                their new format.  If you spent a lot of time
  480.                struggling with your printer manual, you may find this
  481.                program useful.  (See section 7.8 in Part II of this
  482.                document for further details.)
  483.  
  484.            1.4 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  485.  
  486.                PC-Type II has been written to run on the IBM PC, PS/2
  487.                and all compatible machines.  It will run with DOS
  488.                version 2.0 or later.
  489.  
  490.                PC-Type II is a large program and has a number of support
  491.                files such as the HELP file, the DICTIONARY file, and
  492.                the PROFILE file.  In addition, the program itself
  493.                must be constantly available so that different
  494.                portions of it can be loaded as the need arises.  For
  495.                these reasons, it is recommended that you run
  496.                PC-Type II from a hard disk.  Minimum disk
  497.                configurations would be one hard disk and one floppy,
  498.                or two 3½ inch floppies.
  499.  
  500.                Because of the size of PC-Type II itself, it is
  501.                recommended that you have installed at least 384K RAM
  502.                memory.  The more memory you have, the larger the
  503.                files you will be able edit.

  506.            1.5 DISTRIBUTION DISKS' CONTENTS
  507.  
  508.                PC-Type II is distributed with an INSTALL.EXE program
  509.                which decompresses the files PCT1, PCT2, and PCT3 and
  510.                places the uncompressed files onto your hard disk.
  511.  
  512.                When this operation is completed, the following files
  513.                will have been moved to your disk:

  551.                These files will be placed on your hard disk where
  552.                they will facilitate PC-Type II operation.  You may, of
  553.                course, erase those you do not want and move the rest
  554.                wherever you wish.  The files will normally be placed
  555.                in a subdirectory called PCTYPE on the drive you
  556.                specify.
  557.  
  558.                NOTE: If you are configured with two 3½ inch floppy
  559.                      disk drives, the above files will be copied onto

  563.            2.0 GETTING STARTED
  564.            2.1 INSTALLING PC-Type II
  565.          2.1.1 THE INSTALL PROGRAM
  566.  
  567.                The programs and files on your distribution disk have
  568.                been compressed.  The INSTALL.EXE program on your
  569.                "Program Disk" will decompress these files and place
  570.                them on your hard disk.  To run the INSTALL program,
  571.                perform the following steps:
  572.  
  573.                (1) Place the "Program disk" (disk 1) in your source
  574.                    drive.  (Normally this would be your A drive).
  575.                (2) Type "A:INSTALL" (with no quotation marks) after
  576.                    the DOS prompt as shown below.
  577.                    (If "A" is not your source drive, substitute the
  578.                    correct drive designation.)
  579.

  582.                (3) Follow the instructions to install the PC-Type II
  583.                    programs and files onto your hard disk.  They are
  584.                    normally placed in a subdirectory named PCTYPE on
  585.                    a drive of your choice.  However, you may specify
  586.                    a different subdirectory name if you wish.
  587.  
  588.                If you have a PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  589.                file, INSTALL.EXE asks you if you want some files
  590.                moved to a directory in your PATH statement.  If you
  591.                answer YES you will be presented with a list of the
  592.                path directories.  When you choose the desired path
  593.                directory, the files will be moved.
  594.

  601.                If you have problems using the INSTALL.EXE program,
  602.                or wish to install PC-Type II manually, then:
  603.  
  604.                (1) Make a new subdirectory called PCTYPE on the
  605.                    desired drive:  e.g.,  C>MD d:\PCTYPE
  606.                (2) Copy the file EXTRACT.EXE from the Program Disk.
  607.                (3) Run the program three times as:
  608.                    C>EXTRACT a:PCT1         (Program Disk)
  609.                    C>EXTRACT a:PCT2         (Dictionary Disk)
  610.                    C>EXTRACT a:PCT3         (Utility Disk)
  611.  
  612.                (4) Read the file READ.ME.
  613.                (5) Move the files to other locations as you please.

  615.                NOTE: If your PC disk configuration is two 3½ inch

  673.          2.1.2 SETTING YOUR DEFAULT CONFIGURATION

  675.                Now that PC-Type II is installed on your hard disk, you
  676.                may want to set some of the configuration defaults.
  677.                When the install program is finished, you will be
  678.                in the same directory as PC-Type II.  Therefore, to set
  679.                your defaults:
  680.  
  681.                (1) Type "PCT" after the DOS prompt (do not type the
  682.                    quotes).  This starts PC-Type II.
  683.  
  684.                (2) Press F2 to bring up the Main Menu.
  685.  
  686.                (3) Select the "(C)onfigure" option by pressing C.
  687.                    This will cause the menu below to be displayed.

  720.                section 5.4 of PART II of this manual.  (Turn to page
  721.                107 for details.)

  723.                When you exit the Configuration Menu, if you made
  724.                modifications you will be asked if you want to save
  725.                them.  If you do, answer yes.  Then select the path
  726.                provided and the file PCTYPE.PRO.

  729.            2.2 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT PC-Type II
  730.  
  731.          2.2.1 HELP WINDOWS
  732.  
  733.                When you start PC-Type II, it looks for the file
  734.                PCTYPE.HLP.
  735.  
  736.                (1) First it checks to see if you specified this
  737.                    file's location with a DOS parameter.
  738.                (2) If not, it next looks in the default directory.
  739.                (3) If it cannot find the file in either of these two
  740.                    locations, and you are running with DOS version
  741.                    3.0 or greater, then the help file will be looked
  742.                    for in the directory where PCT.EXE itself exists.
  743.                (4) If it cannot be found there either, PC-Type II will
  744.                    finally look for PCTYPE.HLP in one of the
  745.                    subdirectories defined in your PATH= command.
  746.                (5) If it cannot be found there either, then no HELP
  747.                    will be available.
  748.  
  749.                Assuming the file is found, then help will always be
  750.                available during your PC-Type II session by pressing the
  751.                F1 key.  The type of help provided depends upon where
  752.                the cursor is located or what function you are
  753.                performing.
  754.  
  755.                NOTE: You may always escape from HELP by pressing the
  756.                      Esc key.
  757.  
  758.                (1) If the cursor is in the text you are editing, and
  759.                    you are not performing any special function, then
  760.                    by pressing F1 you will be placed in the primary
  761.                    help mode.  In this mode you are presented with a
  762.                    series of HELP windows which you may cycle through
