TABS
Move the cursor to here --> XXXXXXXXXX <-- and delete the X's using the
Del key. Notice that the text in the rest of the paragraph wraps
automatically. This is because the TAB "wrap toggle" is ON, which is
visible by noting the 'W' in the status area at the top of your screen.
Now move the cursor to the X's in the paragraph
below. Press F2 and then T to select (T)abs. Press
M in the TAB menu to select "(M)odify active TAB
toggles", and finally press W to turn the "wrapping"
off. Now press X to exit the menu.
Move the cursor to here --> XXXXXXXXXX <-- and delete the X's using the
Del key. Notice that the text in the rest of the paragraph no longer
wraps. This is because the TAB "wrap toggle" is OFF, which is
indicated by the lack of the 'W' in the status area at the top of your
screen. This is a useful mode to operate in if you do not want your
text to automatically adjust, e.g., if you are editing columns of
information or even a program source file. (Press PgDn)
Now move the cursor to the X below - press F2,T, and N. You are now
inserting a new TAB definition in the file. Move the left margin 5
spaces to the right and the right margin 5 spaces to the left by
changing the location of the L and R characters in the TAB field on the
Command Line. Then press Enter. Answer N to the question "Reformat
Now" and then press X to exit the toggle options menu. Moving to the Y
line below the TAB line, notice that the TABS and Margins displayed
reflect the new TAB setting. Move up and down a few times.
-X-
-Y- Move to the last line in this paragraph and press F2,T,R,N and
finally X to reinstate the default TABs. Move to
each side of this line a few times. Then with the
cursor between the two TAB lines press Ctrl R.
Notice that the new TAB definition is respected.
You may change the spacing and other parameters of the TAB Line which
would allow you to have single spacing mixed with double spacing in
your text. Note that TAB lines will only be saved to PC-Type document
files, files ending with a .PCT extension.
(Press PgDn)
MACROS
Keystroke macros are powerful tools. Any functions in PC-Type can be
executed using macros.
Move to the X below and press AltY. Notice the Y blinking in the
status area indicating that a macro is being defined. Now Press 'a'
three times and then a space. Press Alt Y again and answer N to the
"Save Now?" question. Now press Ctrl Y three times.
-X-
This is the simplest type of macro. Because it was not saved, it will
disappear when this session is ended.
Now move to the Y below and press Alt Y again. Answer Y to the
"Current Macro will be lost" question. Type abc and then press the
left arrow three times. Press Ctrl Y to stop the definition this time
and answer Y to the question "Save Now".
Press A to define the
letter to be used
to start the macro -
then enter the word
junk.
Now press Alt A. This is a recursive macro. Press Esc.
-Y-
Recursive macros will stop automatically if an error condition is
encountered, such as attempting to exceed the top or bottom extremities
of the file. They work especially well with commands on the Command
Line (e.g. search) in conjunction with the F10 key. I normally use
this technique to prepare a list of files from a redirected DOS dir
command for copying, erasing, etc.
SPELL CHECKING
If you are unsure of the spelling of a particular word, move the cursor
anywhere within that word and press Ctrl O (or F2 then W).
Move the screen display until the title "spell checking" above is on
the top line. Now move the cursor to the word being pointed to below
and press Ctrl O.
--> Compatable <--
Since it is spelled
incorrectly, press Y. Press the number corresponding
to the word "compatible".
Notice that the capitalization is preserved. That is how the Fault
Finder works on a single word.
(Press PgDn)
Now we will check this file file from here on down to the end of the
document. Move the cursxr to the N at the beginning of this paragraph.
As you spell check, notice that duplicate words may be deleted as well
as incorrext spellings correkted.
Now press Ctrl Z (or F2 then F). The Fault Finder in this mode will
will always procede from the current cursor location to the end of the
file.
When the checking is completed, press F4 to exit and return to DOS.
