Chapter 1
GETTING STARTED WITH MINDREADER
MindReader is a Powerful Text editor with Address Book,
Glossary and Calculator. MindReader is unique in that it
uses a patented artificial intelligence-based engine to
learn the way you write and who you write to. The more you
use MindReader, the smarter it will get. MindReader suggests
words and phrases as you type. Even before a word is
actually completed. The idea was to enable busy
professionals, to create or modify a document and produce
final copy without having to use a secretary. MindReader has
facilities for creating standard letter and memoranda
formats, storing text that is repeatedly used and providing
the user with a handy way to avoid the frustrations of a
screen littered with typographical errors, misspelled words
and runaway sentences.
WHAT YOU NEED (Hardware Requirements)
To use MindReader, you will need an IBM PC, XT or AT with
at least 256K System (Main) memory and DOS 2.0 or later.
MindReader will run on a floppy disk system or a hard disk
system. Please do NOT use MindReader on a Local Area Network
("LAN") without a Network License from Brown Bag Software.
(All Licenses are issued by Brown Bag Software ONLY). For
more information, contact the nearest Brown Bag Software
Office (see 1st page of this manual). Please note that with
a single 5 1/4" floppy disk system, you'll have very little
room left for your documents. A single 3.5" diskette will
give you more space for your documents. MindReader works
with Monochrome Displays, RGB Monitors, Color Graphics
Adapter ("CGA"), Enhanced Graphics Adapter ("EGA"), VGA
Adapters and Displays, LCD Displays and Plasma Displays.
QUICK STARTING MINDREADER
1. Make a back-up of the MindReader Master Diskette and then
put your Master Diskette in a safe place. Do all work from
your "working copy".
2. If you have a hard disk, make a directory for MindReader.
Let's call this directory "MR", but you can choose any DOS-
acceptable name. Copy the MindReader working diskette to the
sub-directory that you've created for MindReader. Then log
into the MindReader directory.
3. If you have a floppy disk based system, put your working
disk in drive A:.
è
3
At the DOS prompt type:
MR <ENTER>.
Read the Shareware screens at least once. After you have read
them, you can use the Spacebar to move past them. When the
short Menu appears with options to Begin or Load or Exit,
select B for Begin new document.
CHOOSING OPTIONS
We suggest that you first select the video display type that
corresponds to what you're using and select the colors that
are most satisfying to you. Press the ALT key and the S key
at the same time. The Setup Menu will appear. From now on
we'll refer to this key sequence as ALT+S.
Select the video display type and Predefined colors either
by pressing the letter in bold or using the up and down
arrows. You can even customize MindReader EXACTLY to your
color preferences with the Define User Colors option.
We also suggest that you now select the MindReader Hot Key.
The Hot Key is the key that is used to select what
MindReader thinks is the most appropriate word or phrase to
insert. This program comes configured to use the (;) key as
the Hot Key. This key was chosen because it's easily
accessible from the standard typing position of the right
hand. Not all keyboards are configured EXACTLY alike. Look
at your keyboard and if the (;) is not convenient for you,
you can select an alternative. You can change your mind
anytime.
Now tell MindReader what disk drive and sub-directory you
want to save/retrieve your files to/from. If your system has
floppy drives only, you will have very little space on your
"working disk" for documents. Place a formatted "data disk"
in drive B. Move from the Setup Menu to the File Menu by
pressing the Right arrow key twice. Select the option for
Change Default Directory by pressing C. Enter the disk drive
letter and path and press <ENTER>.
MENUS AND HELP
There are several methods for selecting options shown on the
Menus or in pop-up windows. Press the highlighted letter ofè the Menu of your choice along with the ALT key. While in the
Menus, use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight
bar and press <ENTER> to select,or press the highlighted
letter of the menu choice desired. To cancel a function or
erase a pop-up window, press Esc (Escape). This will return
you to your original screen and allow you to continue what
you were doing.
MindReader has Context-Sensitive help everywhere. Whenever
you need further explanation or help, just press the F1
function key.

Chapter 2
WRITING WITH MINDREADER
MindReader is a versatile writing tool. This section
describes the Dictionary, WordComplete, AI Learn, and
FrequentWord options which can be tailored to suit your
individual writing needs.
THE DICTIONARY
MindReader has an expandable dictionary which contains the
words most frequently used for business letters and
memoranda. You can add the special words and phrases,
technical terms, geographical locations and proper names
(what we call the jargon of your business) to the Dictionary
to make your writing easier, quicker and more efficient.
TYPING WITH WORDCOMPLETE
MindReader allows you to concentrate on writing by
decreasing the need to type. To type a word with MindReader,
you only need to type the first few letters of a word.
Suppose the word you want is "opportunity". Just type opp
and a pop-up window appears with a short list of words:
; opportunity
2 opposite
Press the semi colon key (;) and the entire word is typed;
you don't even need to use the space bar because MindReader
moves the cursor to the correct position for starting the
next word. Twelve key strokes have been replaced by four,
and the potential for typographical error has been virtually
eliminated. Press the 2 key, and MindReader turns opp into
opposite. MindReader calls this facility WordComplete. è If you are a very fast typist, and find the pop-up windows
distracting, you can turn WordComplete off, or put it on a
Standby mode so that long words or phrases can be called in
by pressing the (;) key or YOUR OWN Hot Key. Slower typists
will find that using WordComplete in the Automatic mode
eliminates keystrokes and increases accuracy. Use the Setup
Menu to change the WordComplete level and/or Hot Key.
USING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
MindReader can reprioritize the order of words in the
Dictionary pop-up windows according to your use. Artificial
Intelligence analyzes your writing patterns and moves the
word you use most frequently to the position by the Hot Key
for quick selection. For example, if MindReader determined
that you consistently used the word "opposite" more than the
word "opportunity", it would move opposite to the HOT KEY
position and opportunity would become associated with the
number 2.
5
USING FREQUENTWORD
The FrequentWord option allows you to designate the words
that you want to appear in a pop-up window when you type
the first letter of the word or phrase. Pressing the (;)
or your HOT KEY will call the entire word or phrase to the
screen. For example, if you type the letter T, a pop-up
window immediately appears with the following words:
; the
2 that
3 this
4 there
5 to the
There is a high likelihood that one of these words is the
word you were planning to type. To type "the" just press
the semi colon (;) or your HOT KEY. If the word you had been
planning to type was transportation, continue to type (e.g.
type transp) and a Dictionary window with the words
"transport" and "transportation" will appear.
ADDING A WORD
To add a word to the Dictionary, position the cursor in the
space at the end of the word and press Shift+F1. Any word
that you use frequently should be added to the Dictionary.
Adding acronyms, proper names, or geographical locations
will save you a lot of typing time. In addition, any word
added to the Dictionary will not be flagged for spelling
when you use either InstaSpell or Spelling Checker.è
ADDING/DELETING A PHRASE
To add a phrase to the Dictionary, position the cursor at
the end of the phrase, press Shift+F2, and the Dictionary
Update window will appear. From here you can control the
length of the phrase and whether to add or delete it in the
Dictionary or to adjust the FrequentWord lists. Dictionary
phrases can contain up to 20 words or 130 characters. The
only way to delete a single word from the Dictionary is to
delete a one word phrase.
ADDING A FREQUENTWORD
To install your own word or phrase in FrequentWord, select
and adjust the length as above. Then select S for Store as
a FrequentWord. Another pop-up window will appear with the
question, "Overwrite which phrase", followed by five
choices. Once you have replaced a word or phrase, it will be
included in the window that pops up whenever the initial
letter is typed. The FrequentWord installations are not in
the Dictionary and might be flagged for sight verification
during the spelling check.

Chapter 3
LEARNING WITH A SAMPLE LETTER
Writing a letter is the best way to become familiar with
MindReader. The file LETTER.DOC on the MindReader diskette
was designed to lead you through most of the functions
necessary for business correspondence. You can print a copy
of the file with the DOS command: COPY LETTER.DOC PRN
<ENTER>. The letter is typical. Most business correspondence
is one to five pages long, involves original text, phrases
which we frequently use, paragraphs of boilerplate, and
difficult-to-type conventions such as the name and address
block. MindReader makes all of these easier.
CREATING A NAME AND ADDRESS BLOCK
The sample letter, like most business correspondence,
begins with a name and address block. Press F9 to pop up
the AddressBook. Use the arrow keys to move the highlighting
bar to Mr. Walt Robinson III, and press <ENTER>. The
complete name and address block will appear on your screen.
The AddressBook may also be accessed through the Accessoriesè menu by pressing Alt+A then A -- or just press F9. Press
the Help key, F1, for directions on navigating and
searching in the AddressBook.
WRITING WITH WORDCOMPLETE
Now that the name and address block is in, it's time to
write. The first word of the letter to Mr. Robinson is
"Extraordinary." Type "Extr". A pop-up window appears with
a list of words Press 2 and the entire word is written.
In this case, 5 keystrokes were needed to type a 13 letter
word.
ADDING "ING"
Type the first sentence of the letter, but stop at
"manufacturing". Type "manu" and then 2 to select
manufacture from the window. Now press F3 to add the "ing."
MindReader uses Artificial Intelligence to apply the
appropriate grammatical rules, in this case dropping the
"e" from manufacture to form a participle.
MAKING A WORD PLURAL
The next word in the sample letter is facilities. Type
"faci" followed by 2 to select facility. Press F2 to make
the word plural. Again MindReader automatically drops the
"y" and adds "ies" to spell the word correctly.
7
PAST TENSE
Continue typing the sentence, but stop at "enhanced." Type
"enh" followed by a semi colon (;) or your HOT KEY to select
enhance. Press F4 to create the past tense. In this case, it
would be just as easy to type d. But many words double the
final consonant to form the past tense based on rules.
MindReader knows the rules, and doubles the final consonant
when necessary.
PUNCTUATION
Finish typing the first sentence of the letter to Mr.
Robinson. Note that when you type a period, the cursor will
automatically move two spaces. MindReader spaces correctly
for periods, commas, question marks and other punctuation.
Start typing the next sentence. When you type "next year"è and a comma, MindReader automatically moves the cursor one
space, ready to begin typing the next word.
You do not need to backspace to insert a comma or period if
you have used WordComplete and the cursor has moved one
space forward to begin the next word. Just type the comma or
period, and MindReader will go back to put it in the right
place.
Note that when you came to the end of a line, MindReader
automatically continued your text at the beginning of the
next line. This is called word wrap. The only time you have
to press the <ENTER> key is when you want to end a paragraph.
REAL-TIME SPELL CHECKING
If MindReader finds a word it hasn't learned yet or that is
misspelled, it will highlight the word when InstaSpell is
activated. If the spelling is correct, press Shift+F1 to add
the word to MindReader's Dictionary. If the word was mis-
spelled, correct the word and continue. Toggle InstaSpell
On and Off using the Setup Menu.
END OF PARAGRAPH
MindReader's Formatting functions define the end of a para-
graph in a special way. Paragraphs are recognized by either
an empty line (block paragraph style) or by a Tab at the
beginning of a line (indented parapgraph style). To create
an end of paragraph, press <ENTER> at the end of a line, and
then press <ENTER> again or press the Tab key. In the
letter to Mr. Robinson, press <ENTER> twice after the word
"doubled."
8
GLOSSARY
The Glossary stores longer phrases, sentences and/or
paragraphs for insertion in a few keystrokes. We will use
the GLOSSARY function of MindReader to create the second
paragraph of the sample letter. Press F8 to activate the
GLOSSARY. Alternatively, you could press ALT+A, then G (to
select Glossary from the menus). A pop-up window appears
with a business glossary. The symbols and words in the Help
window (F1) illustrate alternative methods for movingè through the Glossary.
The first 32 characters of whatever you put in the Glossary
are shown in the pop-up window. However, pressing <ENTER>
causes all of the text associated with the ID under the
highlighting bar to be printed, not just the 32 characters
shown in the pop-up window.
The third paragraph of the letter has two sentences that are
stored in the Glossary because they are frequently used
phrases. Make certain that the cursor is at the point where
you want to insert the next paragraph. Press F8, move the
highlighting bar to A1, and press <ENTER>. Press F8 again,
move the highlighting bar to A2, and press <ENTER>. The two
sentences are now in the body of your letter.
SIGNATURE BLOCK
Correspondence is frequently closed with a signature block.
MindReader makes this easy. Bring the cursor down to the
beginning of a line where you want the signature and press
Shift+F7. Since we do not expect everybody who buys Mind-
Reader to be named John R. Willoughby, we have inserted two
lines at this point in the Glossary which will tell you how
to create your own signature block.
9
Chapter 4
EDITING WITH MINDREADERè
Changing a document written with a pencil on a lined pad
usually involves crossing out words, squeezing changes in
between the lines, and drawing arrows to show where new text
should be inserted. MindReader provides several functions to
facilitate editing a document.
MindReader supports certain of its own editing commands AS
WELL AS the popular WordStar editing commands.
NOTE:
WordStar is a TradeMark of MicroPro International Corporation.
CURSOR MOVEMENT
From the Edit screen use Alt+C to pull down the Cursor Menu.
Although you could use these highlighted letters to move the
corsor around on the screen, that would be "Mindless"
(couldn't resist). Try it by intuition instead. You will find
that MindReader supports at least two or three ways of moving
around the screen.
NOTE:
From now on, we'll use the symbol ^ to represent the control
(Ctrl) key. ^Y means holding down the Ctrl key while
pressing the Y.
INSERTING A WORD OR PHRASE
Press the Insert key (Ins) to toggle between Insert and
Overwrite modes of entering text. The bottom right screen
border will display the mode as either "INS" or "OVR." In
Overwrite, whatever is typed replaces what is under the
cursor. With Insert mode, new characters will push existing
text to the right along the line. If you try this, you will
notice that text can be pushed past the right margin (i.e.,
it does not "wrap.") This is easily fixed with the paragraph
formatting key ^B.
DELETING A WORD
To delete a word you have two options available. You can
either delete the word just left of the cursor by pressing
F6, or to the right of the cursor by using the WordStar
command ^T.
INSERTING A LINE
Press Shift+F4 to move the entire line where the cursor is
positioned down one line, leaving a blank line in its place.
This is useful for inserting new paragraphs or sections in
a document. To close up space after inserting several lines
in the same paragraph, press Shift+F5, or ^Y.
10
è
DELETING A LINE
Press Shift+F5 to delete the entire line where the cursor
is positioned. The Oops! key (Shift+F9) can be used to
restore a line deleted accidentally.
ERASE TO END OF LINE
You can erase from the middle to the end of a line by
pressing Pressing Alt+E and then E again for "Erase to EOL"
function. You may also use the WordStar command ^QY.
THE OOPS! KEY (Shift+F9)
This key allows you to restore text you've accidentally
deleted using the F6 Delete Word or Shift+F5 Delete Line
functions. The Oops! key restores either the last word or
the last line deleted, whichever was done most recently.
You can also refer to the Edit Menu by typing Alt+E to
remind yourself of the names of these function keys.
There are two Master Lists of key assignments available
through the Master Help System. From the Edit screen press
F1, and select Keys (Alt+K) for the MindReader commands or
WS Keys (Alt+W) for supported WordStar keys.
CONTROLLING WORD WRAP
Word wrap insures that words entered past the right margin
will carry down to the next line. For programming, or other
tasks, you may want word wrap off. Toggle word wrap with ^W
(or the WordStar command ^OW). When word wrap is on, a "W"
will appear on the bottom screen border.
SEARCH AND REPLACE A WORD
MindReader has the ability to locate the occurrence of a
word or a phrase in any part of the document in one or in
multiple occurrences. You can either search for a word or
phrase or search and replace that word or phrase with an
alternate word or phrase. This is called SEARCH & REPLACE.
To activate the Search & Replace feature in MindReader, you
can either choose the Document Menu by pressing ALT+D and
select the Search & Replace option by either pressing an S
or by moving the cursor bar with an arrow key and pressing
<ENTER>. The WordStar command for Search is ^QF. The Word-
Star command for Search & Replace is ^QA.
Search & Replace uses a pop-up window that travels through
your document. From this window you can select conditions
for searching and replacing. Try this feature, and refer to
the Help (F1) for a description of the options.
11
SPELLING CHECKER
With the cursor at the top of the file, press F5 to check
the spelling of all the words in your text against Mind-è Reader's Dictionary. MindReader flags each word that it
does not recognize. Most of these words will be three or
four letter words not in the Dictionary. Once you have
corrected a misspelled word or verified that the original
spelling is correct (in cases where the word in not in
MindReader's dictionary), press F5 again to continue the
spelling check. MindReader will not stop at single letters
in the text. Remember, Shift-F1 adds words to the dictionary.
MOVING TEXT
Sometimes what was originally written as an introduction
becomes the fifth paragraph in the final draft. To move text
within a document, it must be marked, and then moved or
copied as described below.
MARKING TEXT
Press Alt+F9 or the WordStar Command ^KB to begin marking
the text in the line where the cursor is positioned. Use the
Directional Arrows to bring the cursor to the end of the
block you would like to mark. ^KK will mark the end of the
block.
BLOCK FUNCTIONS
After marking a block of text, press Alt-D and then K (or
Alt+F10) for a pop-up window with the following options:
Move block
Copy block
Delete block
Print block
Upper Case block
Lower Case block
Write block file
Left Align block
Justify block
12
Chapter 5
FORMATTING A DOCUMENT
Formatting facilities let you improve the appearance of
your document by using tabs to indent, skipping lines
between paragraphs, closing up spaces, and generally
organizing a document prior to printing. MindReader has
numerous formatting facilities which enhance the appearance
of your business writing.
RULER SETUP
Press Alt+F7 to set the Tab stops or control indents, the
right margin and whether to save the Ruler at the bottom of
the screen with the document.
NOTE:
The LEFT MARGIN is set within the Printing Parameters Menu,
which is called from the Print Menu.è
OPTIONS MENU
This menu has several facilities which can help you with
your work. From the Options Menu you can:
Add a word to the Dictionary
Add/Delete phrases in the Dictionary
View the Information Window
Write your signature
Enter the Line drawing mode
Record Keyboard Macros
MindReader allows for up to ten user defined Keyboard
macros. A macro is a collection of keystrokes assigned to
a single key combination. Use a macro to automate a series
of frequently repeated operations. In MindReader, the
Shift+F1 through Shift+F10 keys are reserved for macros.
13
Chapter 6
SAVING A DOCUMENT
MindReader offers you three ways to save a document. First,
open the File menu (Alt+F), highlight the "Save & Continue"
option and press <ENTER>. If you have not yet named your
document, the program will bring up a window with the
default path and ask for a filename. You can enter any
valid DOS path or filename.
If you are using MindReader on a Floppy Disk system, we
suggest that you do not save documents on the program
diskette; there is not enough room. Always save your
documents on a data diskette or your hard disk.
AUTOSAVE
MindReader stores a document in Random Access Memory (RAM)
while the file is edited. If you were to have a power
interruption during the editing of a file, all changes in
the document that YOU ARE CURRENTLY EDITING would be lost.
MindReader's Autosave function, accessed through the Setup
Menu can relieve this. You determine how often the
documents you work on get saved by entering a time value
from 0 - 40 minutes. Setting 0 as your value will turn the
Autosave function off.
Your third save option is in the Quit menu. When you bring
up the Quit menu by pressing ESC or Alt+Q, you are given the
choices "Save and exit to DOS" and "Discard & exit to DOS".
To save a document just prior to exiting the program, select
the "Save & exit to DOS" option.
RENAMING A SAVED FILE
If you wish to rename a document file that you have
previously saved, press Alt+F then R. A window will appear
with the current default path. You can either keep the same
path or choose another to save your file in. Type in the new
filename and press <ENTER>. The document is now saved with
a new name.
PROTECTING YOUR DOCUMENTS
You can protect your sensitive documents from unauthorized
viewing by encoding them with a code word. The code word can
be from 5 to 10 characters long. To use this function, press
Alt+D then type E. Enter your code word and press <ENTER>.
You will be asked to confirm the code word. To Decode
your document, follow the same procedure as with Encoding,
only from the Document Menu type D for Decode document.
WARNING
There is no way to "find" your code word or password if you
forget it!
14
Chapter 7
PRINTING A DOCUMENT
Press F7 (or Alt+P and then P) for the 2nd level menu called
"Printing Parameters." Here you can set the following
options for printing:
Left margin (Range is 1-40)
Form length (Range is 22-132)
Spacing (Single or Double)
Page pauses (Yes or No)
Number pages (Yes or No)
All in bold (Yes or No)
# for first page
How many copies
LaserJet
Pressing the ESC key from this window, or Alt+P from the
word-processing screen will bring you to the main Print
menu which gives you several other options. Always watch
the screen for additional instructions (e.g., the Controlè Code option requires further input). Included here are:
Start printing
Mail Merge
Printing parameters (Goes to window mentioned
above)
Envelope printer
Bold insert
Underline insert
Insert printer control codes (Any that your printer
will recognize)
View page breaks
MAIL MERGE
Mail Merge allows you to print the same letter several times
each with a different name and address block. First, load
your document or create a new one. Next, place the cursor on
the left margin of the line where you would like the name
and address to appear. Press F9 to bring up the AddressBook.
Place the highlight bar on each name you want mail merged
and press the spacebar. A triangular figure will appear just
to the left of the name. Repeat the marking procedure for
the other names on the mailing list. When finished hit Esc.
Then get into the Print menu by pressing Alt+P. Make sure
that your printing parameters are set properly by pressing P.
Press Esc then M for mail merge. Your document will begin
printing starting with the first name marked in the F9
AddressBook window.
15
Chapter 8
ADDING TO THE GLOSSARY
The glossary contains standard phrases and text which are
used in day to day writing. Each entry can contain up to 700
Characters. Complete paragraphs, a series of paragraphs,
price schedules, or matrices can be stored as a single
entry. The definition of a single entry is that text
associated with a single ID. An ID consists of a vertical
bar (|), Alphabet character, and Number, (e.g. |E9).
To add to the glossary, press Alt+A for the Accessories menu
and press E. The Glossary will be loaded into the Edit
screen just like any other document file. This file's name
is MR.GLS. The function keys are the same as those used for
writing in MindReader and function in the same manner. To
move through the Glossary, use Pg Up Pg Dn, or the Up and
Down Arrows.
The Glossary holds 260 ID's. To add text, scroll down to the
line below an empty ID, and add a line using Shift+F4. Type
the phrase, sentence, or paragraph you wish to add. Most of
the Sample letter has been loaded into ID's |A1 to |B1. Use
these as examples of how to enter text in the Glossary.
VARIABLE TEXT
If you surround the word DATE or the word TIME with dollar
signs ($) in the Glossary, the current day's date or timeè will be substituted when the text is called to the screen.
You can also insert Variable Text in Glossary entries so
that when you select a paragraph from the Glossary in Edit
mode, new words or phrases can be substituted. Place dollar
signs around text you are adding to the Glossary in order to
insert variable text later. When the item is selected during
writing (with F8 and an ID), MindReader will prompt for the
text to substitute. The next section provides an example.
MEMORANDUM
Glossary item |A0 will create a memorandum format. It is
accessed through F8 in the Edit mode like an other text entry
in the Glossary. The memorandum block can be tailored to any
conventions used by your business. After placing the
highlighting bar over the |A0 ID and pressing <ENTER>, a
pop-up window will appear: "replace $Memo To$ with" allowing
you to insert the name of the person to whom you are
writing. A second window will appear so that you can insert
the topic of the memo. Press <ENTER> after you have typed the
new information and MindReader will create a correctly
formatted memorandum. You can create and save additional
memorandum blocks using any available ID.
16
SIGNATURE BLOCK
The |S1 ID in the Glossary is reserved for a signature
block. Your signature should be entered here in place of
the example included on the program diskette. The closing
Very truly yours can be centered or left justified, and can
be changed to suit your personal preference. Use Shift+F5
