Introduction
------------
WinPost provides a mechanism for manipulating on-screen reminder
notes for Microsoft Windows 3.0. Up to 32 "notes" can be in use
at any given time. WinPost will save the state of all notes upon
program termination, so next time you bring up the program, the
notes will look exactly the same as when you exited the program.
It also has a "Layout" feature, which allows the user to assign
individual notes to one or more "layouts" so that the user can
choose to display only notes belonging to a particular "layout".
Controller Icon
---------------
When you start WinPost, it will appear as an icon. This is
called the Controller Icon, and it cannot be maximized into a
window.
When you click on the icon, it will display a system menu with
the following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the icon.
Close Terminates the program.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another
window.
Create a note Selecting this menu item brings up a
pop-up menu which is used to select a
note size. The user selects one of
three sizes (1.5" by 2", 3" by 3" or 3"
by 5"), or the default size (see
Configuration section below). If a
maximum number of notes (32) is already
in use, a dialog box with an error
message will appear.
Show all notes Selecting this menu item will display
all active notes. All hidden notes are
redisplayed, and notes covered by other
windows are brought to the front. Notes
Icon will also disappear (see below).
Hide all notes Selecting this menu item will hide all
active notes. It will also create a
Notes Icon to indicate the fact that at
least one note is hidden.
Layout... Selecting this menu brings up the Layout
Dialog (explained below), which allows
the user to select, add or delete note
layouts.
Configure... Selecting this menu brings up the
Configuration dialog (explained below),
which allows the user to customize
various parameters.
Save To Disk Allows the user to save information
about notes to disk.
About WinPost... Displays information about the author.
Layout Dialog
-------------
This dialog box is used to select the active layout. Each note
is assigned to none, one or more layouts by the user. When the
user selects a particular layout, all notes which do not belong
to the selected layout behave as though they do not exist. This
feature can be used to create notes specific to a particular task
or an application, so that numerous notes can be assigned to
various layouts to reduce the amount of notes showing at one
time.
The user selects the active layout by selecting the appropriate
layout description in the listbox and pressing the "Use" button,
or double-clicking on the desired description. Pressing the
"Cancel" button terminates the dialog box without changing the
current layout. Selecting a layout and pressing the "Delete"
button deletes the selected layout. Pressing the "Add..." button
brings up another dialog box which prompts for the description of
a new layout (31 character limit).
A reserved layout named "All" is used to select all notes.
When a new layout is selected, all notes which do not belong to
the selected layout will disappear as though they no longer
exist. However, information pertaining to these notes are still
kept so that they will be displayed once again if a layout to
which these notes belong is selected.
Configuration Dialog
--------------------
This dialog box is used to customize various parameters.
Font Selection:
The user may change the font used by the note windows.
Two combo boxes are used to configure the font. The
"Face Name" box is used to select the font face, and
the "Point Size" box is used to select the font size.
When a new font face is selected, the "Point Size" list
box is opened, showing the available point sizes for
that font.
Note Color:
The user selects the desired color of the note windows.
Default Note Size:
The user selects the default note size by pressing one
of the radio buttons.
Auto Save Timer:
The user may opt to have WinPost save the contents of
all notes periodically so that not all work is lost if
the system crashes before the user has had a chance to
write to disk or terminate the program. The user
specifies how often WinPost should save to disk (in
minutes); setting this parameter to zero disables the
Auto Save feature.
Once all the parameters have been configured, the user may save
the configuration by pressing the "Accept" button. Pressing the
"Cancel" button will abort the dialog without making any changes.
Note Window
-----------
Each note is an editable window. Standard editing operations are
available. Contents and the position of each window is saved
whenever you end the program; when you run the program again, all
the notes will be restored. A note window can be moved just like
a normal window; its size, however, cannot be changed.
Each note window also has the standard system menu gadget.
System menu will show the following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the window.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another
window.
Delete this note Selecting this menu item deletes this
note.
Hide this note Selecting this menu item hides this
note.
Change caption... Allows the user to change the note
window title bar caption. A dialog box
will appear, prompting the user for the
new caption.
Assign to Layout... Selecting this menu item brings up a
dialog box which is used to select the
layout(s) to assign this note to. More
than one layout may be selected. The
user assigns the layouts by selecting
the appropriate entries in the list box.
Pressing the "Select all" button selects
all layouts. Once the appropriate
layouts are selected, pressing the
"Accept" button saves the layout
assignment. The user may cancel the
operation by pressing the "Cancel"
button.
Undo Undoes the last editing operation.
Cut Deletes the selected text and copies it
into the system clipboard.
Copy Copies the selected text into the system
clipboard.
Paste Copies the content of the system
clipboard at the cursor position.
Notes Icon
----------
If there is at least one note that's hidden, a Notes Icon will be
displayed. This icon operates just like a standard application
icon. Just like the controller icon, it cannot be maximized into
a window. Clarification: a note window that is covered by
another window is not considered to be "hidden" -- a note is
"hidden" when you select "Hide all notes" menu item on the
Controller Icon, or "Hide this note" menu item on the Note window
menu.
When you click on the Notes Icon, it will display a system menu
with the following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the icon.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another
window.
Show all notes Selecting this menu item will show all
active notes (just like selecting the
menu item by the same name on the
Controller Icon).
Mouse Shortcuts
---------------
Several common operations can be selected by using various mouse
shortcuts. The following shortcuts are available:
Controller Icon
Double-clicking the left mouse button creates a new
note of default size.
Single-clicking the right mouse button hides all notes.
Double-clicking the right mouse button hides all notes
except one; series of double-clicks can be used to
cycle through all notes one at a time.
Notes Icon
Double-clicking the left mouse button shows all hidden
notes.
Note Window Menu Gadget
Double-clicking the left mouse button hides that note.
