Why use WINCHECK!
Old DOS applications like CHKDSK.COM should not be run from inside MS Windows, with the "/f" option on..
WINCHECK prevents CHKDSK from running if and only if MS Windows is running. If windows is not running
chkdsk runs just as before.
Suggested list of files to protect:
Programs that should be protected are those that can corrupt your disk, if run from within Windows. As a
practical matter the chances of corruption are not high. However, once is probably more than most of us would
tolerate. Don't gamble! It is hard to remember if Windows is running or not and then whether a particular
program is safe to run or not. Here is a list of files that probably should be protected.

Warnings and cautions:
We have tested the WINCHECK system carefully. We believe that WINCHECK should work with ANY old
DOS application in any situation. However, there may be some obscure program and situation that will not work
correctly. At this time there are no known problems.
WINCHECK does absolutely no writing to your disk(s).
Advanced Information:
WINCHECK has been tested under DOS 3.30 and 4.01. Under Windows 3.0 and 3.0a.
WINCHECK protects(retrofits) DOS applications, utilities that are not now nor ever were Windows aware.
DOS 5.0 utilities are not Windows aware.
Systems with virus protection:
There no known problems with virus protection programs.
Exit values and errors.
The old DOS application inherits(receives) the command line and the environment. Command line redirection IS
supported.
Exit codes in Batch files.
When used in a batch file. If WINCHECK successfully runs the original old DOS application then the batch file
will receive the exact exit codes documented for that application.
If WINCHECK fails to load the original DOS application then it issues an exit code that attempts to mimic the
old application. The exit code issued is 4, as used in BACKUP to indicate "terminated due to error"
Fatal Errors:
If a WINCHECK application encounters a fatal error it will issue a short descriptive message and quite with an
exit code of 4.
Verifying correct installation:
run "CHKDSK !?". CHKDSK should print version message with Mom's Software copyright.
Custom Windows and OS/2 work:
We do applications and device drivers, inquire at your convenience.
UPDATES:
In theory this program should not need to be updated. However, the strategy that we have employed to protect
CHKDSK is a very conservative one. It is probable that in the near future we will discover additional
information and checks that can be performed by our protection utility that would be of benefit. If this comes to
pass then we would almost undoubtedly issue an update. Watch the bulletin boards for more recent version than
the one you have. If you register your copy then you will be notified by mail.
