INTRODUCTION
Hardware Requirements:
Both Click & Show (show.exe) and Click & Show Setup (clsetup.exe) run
under Microsoft Windows 2.1 and require a mouse and 640K of memory.
We also strongly suggest you have both extended and expanded memory
if you will be working with color screens. And of course an 80286 is
almost mandatory for all Windows applications.
The Click & Show system is a set of two programs used for laying out
and then presenting a collection of "slides" or screens in a logical
and useful manner. One program, Click & Show Setup (clsetup.exe), is
used to design the slide show layout and the "touch areas" (TA's)
on each slide, while the Click & Show (show.exe) program is used to
"run" the show. In a sense you can think of this system as a mouse
driven hypertext system for graphical images.
The system is not a slide generator. It takes previously generated
slides (more on this in a minute) and allows the designer to put
together a "slide show".
Click & Show Setup (clsetup.exe) is a program for designing the
layout and setup of "slide shows" to be presented by the Click & Show
program. For each slide show, you define a starting slide, and then
for each slide in the show you can define touch areas (TA's). Each
touch area is defined so that it "points" to another slide in the
show. During a run, the end user double clicks on a TA and the new
slide the TA points to is rapidly displayed. Each slide in the show
may also have an associated background touch vector which points to a
"default slide". Double clicking on a region not in a touch area
will display the default slide. For example, the default slide may
be the top slide in the show or perhaps the top slide in this series
of slides. This is analogous to returning to a previous menu.
Click & Show Setup (clsetup.exe) obtains its slides (or screens) in
one of two ways, either from the clipboard or from disk files.
Currently we only support bitmaps, but we allow you to get a metafile
(from clipboard or disk) and convert it to a bitmap. Slides must be
generated by the designer using any one of a number of the drawing
programs currently so popular (Draw Plus, Paintbrush Plus, PC Paint).
If the drawing program is a Windows app then it will be easy to put
these images on the clipboard and import them into Clsetup. Otherwise,
an image can be captured with the frame grabber provided with Windows.
For more info on using the Frame Grabber utility, see you Windows manual.
Finally if the drawing application can store the slide in a Windows
bitmap or metafile format, the designer can import the image from disk.
The other half of the system is the Click & Show program (show.exe),
which presents the collection of "slides", known as a "show", put
together by the designer using Clsetup. The end user moves from
slide to slide in the show by clicking on the predefined "touch
areas" with the mouse. Currently, the only type of slides supported
in a show are bitmaps in Microsoft Windows format.
Click and Show does not explicitly show the touch areas that are
defined via Clsetup. It is assumed that the locations of the touch
areas will be obvious from the slides themselves.
7
The system is designed as two separate programs to reduce run time
size and speed execution. You may be surprised how fast bitmap
images can be loaded from disk (and how large color ones can be).
You should be aware that a full screen color bitmap will take up
around 84k on you disk and will require a fully loaded machine
in order to pass it on the clipboard (you may even need EMS memory
to handle it). If you are using the wonderful EGA-16 driver from
HDC Corp your color bitmaps will be even larger (112K) because they
use 4 color planes in their driver instead of the usual three.
Unfortunately, at this time, Click & Show only supports slides that
are in a bitmap format. We are working on supporting a number of
other image formats (metafiles, TIFF files, MGX, PCX & compressed
bitmaps) but this is for a later release. Because of the hardware
dependent nature of bitmaps, we recommend that both the design and
target "run" machine have the same hardware configuration. You can
go between different display adapters, but the results will not be as
good.
The potential applications for this system are many and with the
advent of cheap optical disks, the size of the shows is almost
unlimited. One example application would be a collection of maps.
The first slide in the show might be a map covering an entire state.
Double clicking on a county or city would bring up a corresponding
map of greater detail. Double clicking on sections of a city could
bring up more detailed maps and so forth.
8
HOW TO USE THE CLICK & SHOW SETUP PROGRAM
To start, type "win clsetup" from DOS or double click on clsetup.exe
from the Windows executive. Clsetup has four entries on its menu
bar: FILE, SETUP, EDIT, and IMPORT. Each entry has its own submenu.
FILE OPTIONS MENU:
Each slide show has a show file associated with it that stores the TA
links and pointers to images. We recommend using the default
extension ".shw" for these files. The FILE option is used to access
the show files. The FILE option has a submenu with six entries: NEW,
OPEN, SAVE, SAVE AS, EXIT, and ABOUT.
NEW OPTION:
Choose NEW when you want to start work on a slide show that doesn't
already exist. This clears memory of data from the slide show you
have been working on. Be sure you save (see below) your work before
doing a NEW. You don't need to choose NEW if you have just entered
the program.
OPEN OPTION:
Choose OPEN if you want to edit a show that already exists. Be sure
to SAVE (see below) your work before doing an OPEN, because the show
currently in memory will be overwritten. Choosing OPEN produces a
list box and an edit box. The list box shows those files in the
current directory having a ".SHW" extent. This is the default extent
for slide show files. If your show file name has a different extent,
you will have to enter the name into the edit box, otherwise choose a
file from the list box by double-clicking on it with the mouse. As
soon as you pick a slide show, the first slide in that show will be
displayed.
SAVE OPTION:
Choose SAVE to save your work. Keep in mind that SAVE will overwrite
the file that you last OPENed. If you haven't done an OPEN or if you
did a NEW after the last OPEN, you will be asked to specify a file
name. If you want to save your work to a file other than the one you
opened, choose SAVE AS. SAVE AS is the same as SAVE, except that
SAVE AS always asks for a file name. It is better if the file names
you use for your slide show files end in ".SHW", since this is the
default extent used by the program.
EXIT OPTION:
Choose EXIT to exit the program. Be sure to SAVE your work first.
9
SETUP OPTIONS MENU:
The SETUP option has a submenu with two entries: DEFINE TOP SLIDE and
SHOW SLIDE.
DEFINE TOP SLIDE OPTION:
Choose DEFINE TOP SLIDE to pick the first slide in a slide show.
This is the first thing you must do when beginning a new show
and can only be done for a new slide show ! At this time you
cannot change the first slide in an existing show, so choose
the first slide carefully.
Choosing DEFINE TOP SLIDE produces a list box and an edit box. The
list box shows those files in the current directory having a ".BMP"
extent. This is the default extent for slide files. If your slide
file name has a different extent, you will have to enter the name
into the edit box, otherwise choose a file from the list box by
double-clicking on it with the mouse. The slide you pick will then
appear on the screen.
SHOW SLIDE OPTION:
Choose SHOW SLIDE to look at another slide in the slide show. A list
box will appear showing all the slides in the show. Choose one of
the names from the list box. This will cause that slide to appear on
the screen, along with all its touch areas. You cannot use this
option to look at a slide that is not in the show. To put a slide in
the show, it has to be "pointed to" by a touch area on an existing
slide (see below).
EDIT OPTIONS MENU:
The EDIT option is used to add, delete, or change the touch areas on
the slide currently being displayed. This option has a submenu with
seven options: ADD TA, MOVE TA, DELETE TA, CHANGE TA PRIORITY, CHANGE
TA SLIDE, BACKGROUND TA SLIDE, and DEL BACKGROUND TA. TA stands for
touch area. A touch area is a rectangular area on the slide that the
user has defined to "point" to another slide in the show. When the
slide show is run using Click & Show, double-clicking within that
rectangle will cause the other slide to be displayed.
The first five of these options are mutually exclusive; that is, one
and only one of them is always in effect at any given time. The
option currently selected is indicated by a check mark. When the
program is started, ADD TA is automatically selected. None of these
options will do anything unless a slide is displayed.
ADD TA OPTION:
Choose ADD TA to add touch areas to the current slide. The touch
area is indicated by drawing a rectangle with the mouse. Put the
mouse cursor at one corner of the rectangle, then depress the mouse
button. Then, with the button still depressed, move the mouse cursor
to the opposite corner of the rectangle and release the button.
After drawing the touch area, you will be asked to name the slide
that the touch area "points" to. A list box will appear showing the
names of files in the current directory with the ".BMP" extent.
Choose a file from the list box or enter a file name using the edit
box. The slide you choose need not be one that is already in the
show.
10
NOTE:
You can have many different TA's pointing to the same slide.
However, all touch areas must be rectangular. A non-rectangular TA
must be approximated with a collection of smaller rectangular TA's.
MOVE TA OPTION:
Choose MOVE TA to move touch areas already on the current slide. To
move an existing touch area, put the mouse cursor within the touch
area you want to move, then depress the mouse button. With the
button still depressed, move the mouse cursor (the touch area will
follow along with it) to the new location.
DELETE TA OPTION:
Choose DELETE TA to remove touch areas from the current slide. To
delete an existing touch area, put the mouse cursor within the touch
area you want to delete, then double-click with the mouse button.
You will be asked to verify that you really want to do a delete.
CHANGE TA SLIDE OPTION:
Choose CHANGE TA SLIDE to change the slides that touch areas point
to. To change the slide that an existing touch area points to, select
Change TA from the menu and then put the mouse cursor within that touch
area, then double-click with the mouse button. A list box will appear
showing the names of files in the current directory with the ".BMP" extent.
The edit box above the list box shows the slide that the touch area
currently points to. If you want to change this, make a selection from
the list box or type a new file name into the edit box.
BACKGROUND TA SLIDE OPTION:
The background of a slide (all the area outside the touch areas) is
itself considered to be a touch area. The user doesn't have to draw
a rectangle to define its extent, but initially it doesn't "point" to
another slide. To make the background touch area point to another
slide, choose BACKGROUND TA SLIDE, then choose a slide. This option
does not change the "EDIT" mode (i.e. which option is checked in the
EDIT submenu). You can also change the slide that a background TA
points to by choosing CHANGE TA SLIDE, double-clicking somewhere on
the background, then choosing a slide.
CHANGE TA PRIORITY OPTION:
Choose CHANGE TA PRIORITY to change the relative priority of touch
areas on the current slide. "Priority" of touch areas has meaning
only when two or more touch areas overlap. As touch areas are added,
the new touch area is placed "below" any overlapping touch areas on
that slide. To change this resulting priority, simply double-click
within the touch area you want to bring to the top.
DEL BACKGROUND TA OPTION:
Choose DEL BACKGROUND TA to make the background touch area point to
nothing again. You will be asked to verify that you really want to
do this. This option requires no further action with the mouse, and
does not change the EDIT "mode" (i.e. which option is checked in the
EDIT submenu). This option has no effect unless you have made the
background of the slide point to another slide (see second paragraph
under CHANGE TA SLIDE above).
11
IMPORT OPTIONS MENU:
The IMPORT option has a submenu with four entries: GET CLIPBOARD,
CLEAR CLIPBOARD, GET DISK METAFILE, and STRETCH AND SAVE SLIDE.
GET CLIPBOARD:
The usual procedure for making a slide for our programs is to use a
drawing program to do the drawing, then copy the screen to the
clipboard in Windows bitmap or metafile format. You can then go into
CLsetup and retrieve the slide from the clipboard by clicking on GET
CLIPBOARD. If the clipboard has a metafile, bitmap, or text, it will
display it (otherwise you will be told that the clipboard has no
useable data). You are then given the option of saving the screen as
a bitmap; or if the data you got from the clipboard is a metafile, as
either a metafile or bitmap. You will be asked to give the slide a
file name. A file name with a ".BMP" extent is recommended for a
bitmap; ".WMF" for a metafile.
NOTE: If space is a consideration, try to use a metafile format. If
you are more concerned with preserving the image in the exact size drawn
then use a bitmap.
GET DISK METAFILE:
You can also get a Windows metafile from the disk and write it back
as a bitmap. To do this, click on GET DISK METAFILE and enter the
name of the metafile. CLEAR CLIPBOARD does just that.
NOTE: When you get a metafile from the clipboard, you will be told
the mapping mode with which the metafile was drawn; and if the
mapping mode was isotropic or anisotropic, you will also be told the
viewport extents. If you are going to save the metafile as a BITMAP,
you can ignore this information, but if you save it as a METAFILE, it
is a good idea to write it down. This information may be necessary
to make the metafile appear as it was originally drawn, and it is NOT
written to the disk metafile.
On the other hand, when you get a disk metafile you will be asked to
supply this information because, as mentioned above, it is not stored
in the disk metafile. If you don't know, it won't hurt to guess; if
you don't like the results you don't have to save them. We plan to
correct this problem in a later version of the programs, when we
support the use of metafiles in Click & Show.
STRETCH SLIDE OPTION:
Choose STRETCH SLIDE to stretch (or compress) a slide (bitmap) so
that it fits the maximized screen exactly. Stretching a slide
causes the slides dimensions to be adjusted to fit the display adapter's
dimensions. This will often distort an image to some extent as extra lines
are added (or removed) and the stretch routine (StretchBitBlt) can only
guess at what you would like to see. This option pulls up a
list box and asks for the name of the slide to STRETCH. It need not
be a slide in the current show. After stretching the image to fit
the maximized screen and displaying it, you will be asked if you want
to save the image in this new form. If you answer yes, it is then
written back to disk in this stretched format. Note that this will
change your bitmap file, so be sure you have backed it up before
stretching it. You may not like the new stretched image and will
want to discard it and reinstate the unstretched image. See below
for more information on stretching.
12
NOTE:
Show and Clsetup are designed to run with a maximized window.
Generally, bitmaps produced by your drawing program will not exactly
fit the maximized Show or Clsetup screens. If you don't stretch your
slides somehow, your slide will either be clipped or will not fill
(or both) the maximized Show or Clsetup screens. This often will not be
a problem and in fact stretching will often distort your images.
You don't have to use STRETCH SLIDE to make your slides fit the
maximized screen. You can tell both the Clsetup and Show programs to
stretch or compress the slides as they are read in. Both programs
will ask the user if he wants to stretch or compress the slides if
the program encounters a slide that does not exactly fit the
maximized screen. (Whatever the answer given, it will apply to all
subsequent slides in the show that don't exactly fit. The program
will ask only once for each show.) But unlike using STRETCH SLIDE,
answering "yes" will NOT cause the program to write the stretched or
compressed slide back to its file. The main disadvantage to
stretching the slides as they are read in is that the Show program
will run much slower if it has to do this.
Alternatively, you can use the STRETCH SLIDE option to stretch your
slides to fit the Show and Clsetup maximized screens. The
disadvantage in doing this is that your slides may become distorted.
Since CLsetup will write the stretched slide back to the file, you
should probably make backup copies of your slides before doing this.
You can stretch any slide at any time, even if it is not in the
current show.
If your slides are smaller than the Show and CLsetup maximized
screens, another possibility is to simply run Show and CLsetup with
smaller screens. This will preserve the original "look" of the
slide.
13
HOW TO USE CLICK & SHOW
To start, type "win show". Click & Show has four entries in its menu
bar: OPEN, TOP, PREVIOUS, and QUIT. There are no submenus. Upon
entering the program, there are only two options: OPEN or QUIT. QUIT
is for exiting the program. OPEN allows you to start a show.
Clicking on OPEN produces a list box showing the files in the current
directory ending in ".SHW". This is the default extent for show
files. If your show file name has a different extent, you will have
to enter the name in the edit box, otherwise choose a file from the
list box by double-clicking on it with the mouse.
When you choose a show, the first slide in that show will be
displayed. At this point you can move among the slides by
double-clicking on touch areas on the slides. The touch areas are
not explicitly indicated as in the setup program, but should be
fairly obvious from the slides themselves. Besides using touch areas
to move between slides, you can move to the previous slide or the top
slide by using the PREVIOUS or TOP options on the menu bar. (The
PREVIOUS option will go to the top slide with the third consecutive
PREVIOUS).
If the Show program encounters a slide that does not exactly fit the
maximized Show screen, it will ask the user if he wants the slides to
be stretched or compressed to fit exactly. Whatever the answer
given, it will apply to all subsequent slides in the show that don't
exactly fit. The program will ask only once for each show. The Show
program will not write the stretched/compressed slide back to its
file; the slide file remains unaffected in either case.
OPENING NEW SHOWS:
To open a new show, use OPEN as described above.
EXITING:
To exit the program, use QUIT.
14
EXAMPLE SESSION
Using a drawing program that runs under windows, create the slides
that you need for the show. You will need a drawing program that can
output to the clipboard in bitmap or metafile format. To get used to
using the program we suggest you first just start with Paint, since
it comes with windows and produces only small black & white bitmaps.
Draw up a couple of slides that you would like to reference each other
(to make things easy, they could just be menu screens). After
completing all the slides and saving them, start up clsetup.exe
and key over to Paint. Now take the first slide and copy it to the
clipboard. Then go into Clsetup and use the GET CLIPBOARD option in
the IMPORT menu to get the slide from the clipboard.
Save the slide with a .BMP extent (if the slide was a metafile, save
it as a bitmap). Repeat this process for all the slides you have made
in Paint so that you now have all the slides "imported" into clsetup
and resident on the disk as bitmaps.
After doing this for each slide in the show, select NEW under the
FILE menu. Next use the DEFINE TOP SLIDE option in the SETUP menu to
define the top slide. Use the mouse to draw rectangles on the slide
defining all the touch areas on that slide and when prompted, selected the
slide the touch area is to point to. Then use the SHOW SLIDE
option in the SETUP menu to call up the other slides in the show.
Again, use the mouse to draw rectangles defining the touch areas. If
you want to define a background touch area for a slide, use the
BACKGROUND TA SLIDE option in the EDIT menu.
After defining all touch areas for each slide, your show should be
finished if you haven't made any mistakes. If you want to move a
touch area, use the MOVE TA option in the EDIT menu. If you want to
delete a touch area, use the DELETE TA option. If you want to change
the relative priority of two or more overlapping touch areas, use the
CHANGE TA PRIORITY option. If you want to change the slide that a TA
points to, use the CHANGE TA SLIDE option. If you want to add more
touch areas, go back to the ADD TA option.
This is also probably a good time to play with the two stretching
options. But if you use the Stretch option from the menu, just make
sure you have a copy of the image on the disk. You may not like the
looks of the stretched image.
When you are all done, use the SAVE AS option under the FILE menu.
Give the show a file name with a .SHW extent. Then go into Click &
Show, select OPEN, and select the new show. The top slide in the
show will appear. Switch between slides by double-clicking within
the touch areas, or by selecting TOP or PREVIOUS.
That's all it takes, enjoy (but remember to register so we won't starve).

3-14-89 RELEASE NOTES CLICK & SHOW VERSION 1.10
The new versions (1.1) of Show and Clsetup differ from the old
versions in two important ways:
1. A couple of bugs have been removed.
2. The old .SHW files are incompatible with the new. This was due to 1.
above. Sorry about that but you'll need to redo any shows you created.
However, the slides are still compatabile.
There are also a few minor changes to Clsetup:
1. You can now import metafiles from disk and then convert them to
bitmaps (so they can be used as slides).
2. There is a new entry in the EDIT menu: BACKGROUND TA SLIDE.
This menu item lets you select the slide the "general background"
points to for the currently loaded slide.
3. The STRETCH SLIDE option has been moved from the SETUP menu (where
it didn't really belong) to the IMPORT menu and renamed STRETCH AND
SAVE SLIDE. See manual for more detail.
4. We added a CLEAR CLIPBOARD option to the IMPORT menu. Selecting
this option will clear what is loaded on the clipboard. This is
in the interest of saving memory.
5. We combined the three CLIPBOARD FORMATS: BITMAP, METAFILE, and
TEXT into one option: GET CLIPBOARD. We first try to get a handle
to a metafile, if one doesn't exist, we next look for a bitmap
and finally for text.
6. We added some Message Boxes and Dialog Boxes here and there to try
and "persuade" our users to license the product. We have also added
a licsensing feature (see manual for more detail).
7. We changed some of the menu accelerators and mnemonics.
