Printer Drivers
IBM PERSONAL PAGEPRINTER:
When printing to the IBM Personal Pageprinter with Pageprinter Adapter
Software version 1.3.1 or later, we recommend that the Windows Spooler be
left on (in WIN.INI, SPOOLER=YES). Please refer to Windows documentation
for additional information about the Windows Spooler.
Import Filters
SMART ASCII IMPORT FILTER:
When using the "Monospace, Import as Courier" option in the opening dialog,
the "Retain Format" option must be checked on in the PageMaker "PLACE" dialog.
WORDPERFECT 5.0 IMPORT FILTER:
Small caps used in WordPerfect will import as small caps in PageMaker.
Only even font point sizes are supported.
Double hyphens (dashes) in WordPerfect will import as double hyphens in
PageMaker.
Font support has been improved to only add the fonts used in the
Wordperfect document to the PageMaker "TYPE SPECS" dialog box. You are,
however, still limited to the fonts specified in the Filter/Driver Pack
documentation. Because of this constraint, you must apply the attributes
you require (i.e. bold, italic, etc.) to the plain versions of the typeface
rather than choosing those as fonts.
WordPerfect supports character based styles, but all PageMaker styles are
paragraph based. The text will import with the proper formatting. The import
filter will allow you to choose whether or not to import the style sheet
definitions. If you do import the style sheets, keep in mind that the
definitions will come in to the "STYLE PALETTE", but they will not be tagged
to the text. You may apply the style sheets to the individual paragraphs
once you are inside PageMaker. Please refer to the PageMaker User Manual for
additional information on PageMaker Styles.

Import filters
==============
Filters allow you to transfer files between Aldus PageMaker and other applications. An import filter reads your file format, translates it, and lets you place a word-processing file, graphics, or other document in PageMaker.
This file includes instructions for installing the PageMaker import filters for WordPerfect 5.0 and Smart ASCII. It identifies features that are supported when importing documents and offers suggestions on how to use the filters. Additional information about importing files created in other applications can be found in the Pagemaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
Note: Users of the International English version of PageMaker will find additional information on filters and drivers in the PageMaker 3.0 Supplement instead of the Pagemaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
The WordPerfect import filter imports files created in WordPerfect 5.0 that have a .WP file extension. Files created in WordPerfect 4.2 are imported using a filter in PageMaker that is part of the PageMaker program. For more information about the WordPerfect 4.2 filter, refer to the PageMaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
With the new Smart ASCII import filter, you can control the format of your text-only files when they are imported. You use this filter to import files that have a .TXT file extension.
Installing the WordPerfect 5.0 and Smart ASCII import filters
You install import filters by copying the filter file you want to the PageMaker directory and modifying the WIN.INI file.
WIN.INI is essential for the proper operation of Windows and PageMaker. Always make a backup copy of your WIN.INI file before modifying it. For additional information on the WIN.INI file and how to make a backup copy, refer to "Appendix B: Customizing WIN.INI" in the PageMaker 3.0 Reference Manual. When working with your WIN.INI file:
* Be sure that your system has only one file named WIN.INI.
* Correct all typos when entering information in WIN.INI.
* Add the pathname to the filtername in the WIN.INI file if necessary.
* You may need to keep PageMaker and Windows on the same drive (for example, C:).
PageMaker can read a maximum of 10 import filters and 20 export filters. If you try to install more filters, PageMaker will display this message:
Cannot initialize filters.
Too many filters. Only the first ten will be used.
To correct this problem, open the WIN.INI file and delete the entries for the filters you don't need.
To install the WordPerfect 5.0 and Smart ASCII filters:
You can do this in Windows by highlighting the WIN.INI filename in the MS-DOS Executive window, choosing "Copy" from the File menu, and then typing a name, such as WINORG.OLD.
2. Copy the filter(s) into your PageMaker directory.
For WordPerfect 5.0 the filename is WP5.FLT.
For Smart ASCII the filename is ASCIIMP.FLT.
3. Open the WIN.INI file using Notepad or another word-processing application.
4. Scroll to the filters section ([PMFilters]) in WIN.INI.
If you do not find the filters section, you can create it by typing
[PMFilters]
as a section heading at the end of the WIN.INI file. Note that there are no spaces between the letters or brackets in the section heading name.
5. Add filter entries to the WIN.INI file.
For WordPerfect 5.0: Add the following entry to the [PMFilters] section: WordPerfect 5.0 Import=WP5,WP
For Smart ASCII: Add the following entry to the [PMFilters] section:
Smart ASCII Import=ASCIIMP,TXT
6. Save the newly modified WIN.INI file, then close Notepad (or your word-processing application) and Windows.
7. Restart Windows so that the changes to WIN.INI will take effect.
WordPerfect 5.0 feature import summary
======================================
Once you've installed the WordPerfect 5.0 import filter, you can import documents created in WordPerfect 5.0 into PageMaker using the "Place..." command.
Using style sheets
------------------
PageMaker imports WordPerfect files that have been formatted using codes and styles and retains most, but not all, of the WordPerfect formats. In addition, WordPerfect style definitions (style sheets) can be imported and used in PageMaker to format and apply styles to paragraphs. For each style imported, a carriage return is added at the end of of your document containing a WordPerfect style definition. These extra carriage returns can be deleted after the document has been placed in PageMaker.
As an alternative to importing style sheets, you can mark your document while in WordPerfect with style name tags to match styles defined in PageMaker. For more information about using style name tags, refer to the section on style sheets in the PageMaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
When you place a WordPerfect document containing WordPerfect styles, PageMaker displays a dialog box asking if you want to import the WordPerfect styles.
Imported styles are marked with an asterisk and are listed in the PageMaker style palette, and "Define styles" dialog box. Although styles imported from WordPerfect are not automatically applied to the text once the document is placed in PageMaker, you can reapply styles to paragraphs once the document has been placed.

The WordPerfect filter will import the following PostScript and non-PostScript font names from a WordPerfect file, as long as the fonts are installed on your system. When importing a WordPerfect file, all of the fonts listed below will be found in PageMaker's "Type specifications" dialog box. Point sizes of the various fonts are shown in the dialog box as long as those fonts are installed in PageMaker. If no point sizes are shown and you want to use those fonts, then they will need to be installed in PageMaker. Any unrecognized fonts are converted to Times Roman.
Note to users of WordPerfect Fontware:

To ensure that your PageMaker Fontware fonts will not be overwritten, make certain that the WordPerfect Fontware files are not located in your PageMaker directory. During printing, any unrecognized serif fonts are converted to Times Roman; sans-serif fonts are converted to Helvetica.

Smart ASCII feature import summary
==================================
The Smart ASCII import filter is a general-purpose import filter. With it you can import text from most word-processing and text editor applications, as long as the text file has the extension .TXT. You can also control how text is imported into PageMaker when your text has been formatted with carriage returns, tabs, and spaces.
PageMaker places text-only files using the publication defaults for type, paragraph, and story-formatting settings that you choose from the Type menu. For additional information about importing text files, refer to the section on word-processing applications in the PageMaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
To place an ASCII file into PageMaker:
--------------------------------------
1. Choose the "Place..." command from the File menu.
PageMaker displays a list of available files in the current directory.
2. Select a file with a file extension .TXT in the list box.
Selecting a file with a .TXT will display the "Smart ASCII import filter options" dialog box.
3. Select the appropriate options:
Remove extra carriage returns: When selected, this option removes one carriage return from a group of one or more carriage returns. This is especially useful when you want to eliminate all carriage returns except for those at the end of a paragraph_just make sure that the end of every paragraph has at least two carriage returns.
Keep tables, lists and indents as is: Check this option (available only when "Remove extra carriage returns" is selected) when you do not want to remove carriage returns from tables or from lists embedded in the text. Tables and lists will be recognized as such when the next line following a line of text begins with spaces or tabs, or a line contains embedded tabs.
Replace___or more spaces with a tab: This option allows you to replace a specified number of contiguous spaces with a tab character. This option is useful if you have made a table using spaces instead of tabs.
Monospace, import as Courier: Check this option to import your text using a monospaced (fixed-width) font, Courier.
No conversion, import as is: This is the default option and imports the text without converting it.
Printer Drivers
===============
This PageMaker 3.0 Filter/Driver Pack contains revised printer drivers for the PostScript and PCL/LaserJet family of printers. Because PageMaker runs under Microsoft Windows, you must first remove the existing printer driver and install the updated driver in Windows.
PostScript Driver
-----------------
Used for most PostScript printers including the IBM Personal Pageprinter, Apple LaserWriter and LaserWriter Plus, and Linotronic 100/300/500. The PostScript printer driver now includes support for Varityper VT-600W and Olivetti LP 5000.
PCL/LaserJet Driver
---------------------
Used for the HP LaserJet family and 100-percent compatible printers. The PCL/LaserJet printer driver now includes support for the HP LaserJet IID, Toshiba PageLaser12, Intel Visual Edge, and Olivetti LP 5000.
A note to users of AppleTalk
----------------------------
If you plan to print to AppleTalk, copy the AppleTalk communications file, APPLETLK.DLL, from the PostScript driver disk to the directory where Windows is installed. In order to print correctly, you must have the PSCRIPT.DRV and APPLETLK.DLL files in the same directory.
Once AppleTalk is installed:

1. Connect a PostScript printer to the AppleTalk port using the "Connections..." command from the Windows Control Panel.
2. Specify the PostScript printer you want by choosing "Printer setup..." from PageMaker's File menu, clicking "Setup," and then clicking "AppleTalk" in the "Printer" dialog box.

Removing printer drivers
========================
To update existing printer drivers, you first need to remove the old driver from your system.
To remove a printer driver from your system:
--------------------------------------------
1. Choose "Control Panel" from PageMaker's Control menu. Or, if you've installed the full version of Windows, start the Windows application CONTROL.EXE from the MS-DOS Executive window.
2. Choose the "Delete Printer..." command from the Installation menu.
The dialog box that appears lists the printers on the disk or directory you specified.
3. Choose the printer you want to delete.
4. Click the "Delete" button.
The dialog box that appears shows the location of the printer driver file.
5. Click "Yes" if the pathname and filename are correct.
The Control Panel removes the printer driver file, port setting, and printer name from your system.
Installing updated printer drivers
==================================
Important: Make sure you have only one driver on your system for each type printer you plan to use. This is especially important when you are updating printer drivers. To remove an old driver, see "Removing printer drivers" described earlier.
To add a printer driver:
------------------------
1. Choose the "Control Panel" command from PageMaker's Control menu. Or, if you're using the full version of Windows, start the Windows application CONTROL.EXE from the MS-DOS Executive window.
2. If you're updating drivers, remove the existing driver before you add the new driver by using the "Delete Printer..." command from the Installation menu as described earlier.
3. Choose "Add New Printer..." from the Installation menu.
The dialog box that appears asks you to enter the pathname of the printer driver file.
4. If the pathname of the is correct click "OK." In the "Available Printers" list box, click the name of the printer you want to add.
For example, choose "PCL/LaserJet" for a PCL printer, such as the HP LaserJet Series II. Choose "PostScript Printer" for a PostScript printer, such as the IBM Personal Pageprinter.
5. Click the "Add" button. Then select the directory where Windows is installed, or type the name of a drive, directory, or both.
The dialog box that appears asks you to type, or confirm, the name of the drive or directory where you want to copy the printer driver file.
6. Click "Yes."
After you have added the new printer driver, use the "Connections..." command from the Setup menu on the Control Panel to connect your printer to the new driver. For additional information about connecting your printer, refer to the section on connecting and setting up your printer in the PageMaker 3.0 Reference Manual.
