Easel Update News:
Version 3.10 (shareware) and Version 4.10 (commercial version) of
Easel are now released. These versions include many new features and fixes.
Among the many changes made:
- Easel is now "better behaved". (It doesn't "lock up" your system
when converting a file, but instead allows other programs to run.)
- Easel now uses the "medium memory model" which means it needs
less memory to run, with unused code kept on disk until needed. This
"overlaying" gives more memory at the expense of some speed degradation.
- Better handling of high color resolution displays enables the
proper display of PC Paintbrush and GIF pictures on 16 color and 256
color displays (it should now work correctly on virtually all Windows
systems).
- Improved support for PC Paintbrush format files. You can now
choose the number of output planes when creating PC Paintbrush output
files. 16 color PC Paintbrush files are properly supported. (Note that
PC Paintbrush for Windows version 1.00 does NOT properly handle 16 color
PC Paintbrush files on 16 color Windows systems, but Easel DOES.)
- Much improved GIF support now includes full color support for
high color resolution displays as well as dithering options which allow
more colors to be simulated on low color resolution displays. A background
display option is now available. On-screen conversion is now a bit faster
than in previous versions.
- An abort option is available to suspend file conversion (enter
escape or control-break to abort a conversion).
- The commercial version now includes full support for HP Laser
PCL compatible output. This feature allows you to send graphics to your
LaserJet or compatible and/or build graphics macros or overlays for putting
logos or signatures in your laser printer. Both portrait and landscape
modes are supported.
- A new manual has been written which fully explains the new features.
It is fully illustrated, bound with a clear plastic cover and is now laser
printed. This manual is sent to all registered users. (PLEASE send in your
registration!)
- Many other minor bug fixes and improvements have been made.
There are many more changes and additions I plan on making in future
releases, but since I have already made so many fixes and improvements, I
thought it would be appropriate to release an update at this time. Please
send any feedback you have concerning Easel (bug reports, feature requests,
etc.) to Kim Levitt via GEnie (address: KIM-LEVITT) or on CompuServe (user #:
76137,1602). You can also send feedback (and registration fees) to:
Synergistic Enterprises

Your contributions will help to continue the development work on
Easel to make it better and better. Read EASEL.DOC for more information on
Easel and on the registration fees. If for some reason you do not feel
Easel is good enough for you to register it, I would at least appreciate
a note explaining what you would like to see improved.
