WUGNET, Nat'l Windows Users Group Network, Announces
DDEWATCH, a Powerful Monitoring Utility for Windows Application
Users and Developers on Members Disk Volume I.
WUGNET, the Nat'l Windows Users Group Network, is pleased to announce the
addition of a DDEWATCH, a Windows application that monitors and tracks
Dynamic Data Exchange messaging and interapplication processing under
Windows. Provided as an exclusive shareware utility for both Window power
users and Window application programmers, DDEWATCH provides a much needed
resource for corporate application specialists in the Windows
environment. Developed by Horizon Technologies Inc. (HTI) to meet the
needs of mission critical applications development under Windows,
DDEWATCH enables a user to watch, in real time, all DDE messaging and
passing of information between a client Windows application and a server
Windows application (provider of information). Using DDEWATCH during the
development cycle can significantly increase performance and throughput
of DDE specific applications under the MS Windows multitasking
environment.
DDE is Microsoft's protocol for managing the exchange of information
among MS Windows programs. DDE offers Windows users a facility for
creating their own customized environments by selecting and linking a
collection of commercial off-the-shelf and custom Windows applications.
As DDE sessions are initiated from client to server, enormous system
resources are applied to support the exchange. In addition, there are no
tools provided by Microsoft to monitor exactly what is occurring during
the message exchange process. DDEWATCH 1.0 was designed to assist users
and developers in monitoring such activity, since such tools are not
provided by either the Microsoft Windows Developers Kit.
The benefits of DDEWATCH can be significant, especially to those
corporate specialists users who are now attempting to apply the DDE
features of third party Window applications such as Pioneer Q+E,
Precision Software's Superbase IV, Word for Windows, Microsoft Excel,
Polaris Packrat, HIQ International's APE, Samna's AMI Professional,
Gupta's SQLWindows and many other full featured DDE applications.
"At first glance, DDE is just a great concept, but with so many
applications now announcing support for this protocol, many of our
members claim to be having problems configuring and customizing multiple
applications for real time data transfer. A number of our WUGNET members,
especially those in the investment market, will find DDEWATCH to be
valuable in real time workstation design. For those developing DDE
applications accessing distributed databases and SQL, DDEWATCH can be
effectively used as an interapplication debugging aid! states Howard
Sobel, editor of the WUGNET Journal, the flagship technical publication
of the National Windows Users Group Network."
DDEWATCH is just one of many invaluable entries on WUGNET Members Disk
Volume I, which also features the Horizon Technologies Dynamic Data
Exchange Developers Kit, full functional demonstration versions of Alien
Computing's FAXIT for Windows and Solea Systems TextManager, COL
Consulting's OSRM2 OS/2 System Resource Monitor, KISS' WINPRINT, and of
course, the WUGNET Cardfile Resource Stacks.
HTI is a Michigan-based software developer specializing in distributed
applications using graphical user interfaces. Bill Hamilton, HTI's co-
founder, stated, "one of the best features of the MS Windows environment
is the application integration possible through DDE. Rather than
repeatedly coding the DDE protocol's logic for each of our Windows
applications, we developed this library. It offers support for both
client and server DDE implementations. We also use the functions,
documentation and examples as part of our training process for
programmers unfamiliar with the mechanics of the DDE protocol. DDEWATCH
offers both users and third party developers a much needed utility to
become productivity in designing a custom mission critical applications
using their own custom DDE-featured applications or commercially
available DDE Window applications."
WUGNET's Members Disk Volume 1 is the first in a series of diskettes
provided to members on a quarterly schedule. The disk features exclusive
development aids, programming tools, public domain utilities, shareware,
full featured demonstration applications, and resource files. All of the
software, including DDEDLL, is provided on an "as is" basis to WUGNET
members. WUGNET quarterly member disks are just one benefit for members.
The WUGNET Journal, an independent technical resource for the Windows and
OS/2 PM user and developer, offers additional information about the
contents of the Members disks.
The National Windows Users Group Network invites both users and
developers to join WUGNET and participate in both learning and accessing
state of the art technology and information on both MS Windows and OS/2
PM topics. For further information on the WUGNET Data Library, the
WUGNET Journal and other membership services, contact Howard Sobel at 215
565 1861. Interested developers may also contact WUGNET for licensing and
source code pricing arrangements at the same number.
