  1.                             Introduction to F-PROT
  2.  
  3. F-PROT is a fairly large package, intended to provide almost complete
  4. protection against computer viruses.  I admit that it is not the most
  5. user-friendly package around, but you will not find many other packages
  6. that are as powerful.
  7.  
  8. It is a bit difficult to say how many different viruses the programs can
  9. handle but F-PROT recognizes 157 "families" of viruses and 250-300 "variants",
  10. depending on the definition of the term "virus variant".
  11.  
  12. The package is free of charge for personal use - for an individual
  13. just using it on a single computer (or two) belonging to him/her, although
  14. I will not refuse a contribution of $20 or so, if you want to support
  15. continued availability of the package.

  17. You are of course permitted to try out the package without paying for it,
  18. but I hope those who use it for an extended perion of time will pay for
  19. its use - as I am pricing the package as low as possible.

  21. F-PROT may be freely distributed outside of Iceland, provided it is not
  22. changed in any way.  In Iceland it is distributed as a commercial product,
  23. under a different name, with a printed manual and a higher level of support.
  24. I am currently looking for companies that might be interested in producing a
  25. translated version of this package in various other countries.

  27. Starting with version 1.14, the pricing of F-PROT has been changed.  I do
  28. not offer the "one-time" fee option any more but I lowered the prices and
  29. switched to an annual fee instead.  This change will not affect those who
  30. have already paid the "one-time" fee.

  34. An individual using it on his own computer :  No charge
  35. Commercial users:                             US$ 1 per machine
  36. Educational institutions:                     US$ 0.75 per machine

  38. The company or organization using F-PROT is expected to provide annually a
  39. rough estimate of the number of computers which the package will be used on,
  40. but an exact number is not necessary.

  42. There is a minimum fee of US$ 20.00, but the fee for organizations with more
  43. than 5000 computers will be negotiated in each case, as the cost per machine
  44. will be lower.

  46.             Annual update fee
  47.  
  48. The update fee is only intended to cover the fixed costs of the distribution
  49. of updates.  Options C, D and E just involve one disk sent by airmail.  If
  50. you need multiple disks please contact me for further information.

  52.         Option A: The organization obtains new versions by FTP or
  53.               other methods from an anti-virus archive.
  54.  
  55.               No charge.
  56.  
  57.         Option B: Updates are sent by E-mail, to a single
  58.               address, in the form of a xxencoded .ZIP file.
  59.  
  60.               Currently no charge, but this may change later.
  61.  
  62.          Option C: Updated versions sent by mail whenever information
  63.               about new viruses is added.

  67.         Option D: Updates sent monthly by mail.

  75. The fee will not change when version 2.0 of F-PROT is available, but may
  76. change in accordance with inflation.
  77.  
  78. In addition, an "emergency service" is provided.  F-PROT may detect, but
  79. be unable to stop or remove a previously unknown virus.  If a new virus
  80. is found, and sent to the author of F-PROT, the relevant parts of the
  81. package will be updated as soon as possible and an updated version sent back.
  82. Normally the updated version would be available within 24 hours of the receipt
  83. of the new virus.

  85. Even though the prices given are in US dollars, you are free to send the
  86. payment in any other currency - my bank is happy to accept Yens, kronor,
  87. pounds, liras, marks etc.....Well, almost anything - not roubles, though.

  121.         F-FCHK.EXE              Removes infections in files.
  122.         F-DISINF.EXE            Looks for boot sector infections.
  123.         F-XLOCK.EXE             Adds code to executable files, so they will
  124.                                 check (when run) if they have been infected.
  125.         F-UNLOCK.EXE            Removes the code described above.
  126.         F-XCHK.EXE              Only allows programs modified in this way

  128.         F-RUN.EXE               Used to run unmodified programs, when F-XCHK

  130.         F-INOC.EXE              Inoculates diskettes against some boot

  139.         F-MMAP.EXE              Produces a detailed memory map.

  141.         F-UNHIDE.EXE            Unhides files.
  142.         F-BOOT.EXE              Shows the boot sector.
  143.         F-PBR.EXE               Shows the partition boot record.

  153. Finally - a disclaimer (well, sort of....)
  154.  
  155. The programs in this package have been thoroughly tested in Iceland and are
  156. (at the time of writing) used on about 1000 computers locally, but versions
  157. 1.07 and later have also been distributed internationally, so most of
  158. the "bugs" should have been detected and removed by now. I cannot, however,
  159. guarantee that every program will work perfectly with every possible
  160. combination of hardware and software.  Because many of the programs in the
  161. F-PROT package expect a very high level of compatibility, some problems could
  162. arise on machines not "100% IBM compatible".

  164. As far as I know the programs are free of bugs, but they are not perfect,
  165. and any suggestions for improvement are appreciated.
