Welcome to:
Directory Freedom 3.50a
(C) Copyright 1989,1990 Gordon R. Haff
All Rights Reserved.
DF 3.50a is a minor bug release which corrects a couple of problems with DF
3.50. The changes are mentioned in the DF350A.NEW file. The CONVERT
program described next is unchanged (except for the modifications
described in the DF350A.NEW file) from version 3.50 since the relevant data
structures in 3.50a are in the same locations as in 3.50. Therefore,
CONVERT 3.50 may be used to update either DF 3.50 or DF 3.50a from earlier
revisions, but cannot be used to convert from DF 3.50 to DF 3.50a.
NOW -- BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE: Make a copy of the distributed programs
-- especially DF.COM. CONVERT and DFCONFIG make irreversible changes to
this program to store new configuration information. Keep a copy of the
unaltered original in case you want to go back to the default settings or
in the unlikely event that the program file becomes corrupted.
NOTES:
1) DF is preconfigured to use a variety of external programs which are in
common use among shareware software users - especially those who make
regular use of electronic bulletin board systems. Most of these
preconfigured programs are NOT distributed with DF. Therefore, unless
these programs (e.g. Buerg's LIST, the default file viewer) are present in
your PATH or in the current directory, the functions assigned to these
programs WILL NOT WORK. Either add the programs to a directory in your
path or reconfigure DF using DFCONFIG.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Using CONVERT:
This is probably also an appropriate place to mention that some users
appear to be having certain problems related to the use of CONVERT. These
problems do not cause any harm to your data but may prevent some commands
from working properly. I don't recommend abandoning the use of CONVERT,
but I do suggest that, if you are having a problem, try restarting from a
distribution copy of DF and do any reconfiguration by hand. This problem
will be investigated thoroughly before the next release.
If you're like most people, you probably won't read this until it's too
late, BUT if you read on just a little bit before you wipe out your old rev
of DF.COM, you'll save yourself some time.
DF 3.50 includes a program called CONVERT.EXE. CONVERT will take your
user-defined program shell information and your attribute information from
DF 2.20, 3.00, or 3.01 and "bring it over" to DF 3.50. Here's how you use
it.
1) Rename your old "DF.COM" to DF220.COM, DF300.COM, etc. (depending on the
revision you are "upgrading."
2) Copy DFxxx.COM, DF.COM (your new rev 3.50), and CONVERT.EXE to the same
directory.
3) Make that directory your default directory.
4) Run CONVERT.EXE by typing CONVERT DFxxx (where xxx is the rev
number you are converting from) followed by <Enter>
5) If you have followed these directions, CONVERT will respond with the
message "Conversion Successfully Completed."
Voila! DF 3.50 is now configured identically to your old version
(DF 3.50 has some new switches and expanded switch options, however, which
obviously can't be brought over from an old rev in which they don't exist.
Any such new settings will have to be customized using your new rev of
DFCONFIG.)
