The following are the major new features contained in DF Version 3.50a
and DF 3.50.
DF VERSION 3.50a
DFCONFIG problems with LShift/Alt and Extended Keyboard support
fixed
Volume label display: Period eliminated for names over 8
characters
User-defined command lines: The character after the ~ was being
skipped. Corrected.
Potential CONVERT problem which may have caused problems
converting < rev 3.00 files corrected
Modified the latest version of PC Magazine's RN directory
tree program and included as the new RF shell. This may
solve the DOS 4.0 problems encountered by users.
DF VERSION 3.50
General cleanup of shell routines should result in more reliable
operation for a wider range of programs (user-defined and
Run a Program)
Parameters can be inserted at runtime in user-defined functions
Optional support for F11/F12 added to user-defined functions
Checks added to path length (63 characters max) and length of
user command lines when expanded (i.e. file names filled in,
etc.) to prevent overruns
Menu moved to avoid conflict with long destination path names
Information added to display: number of highlighted entry, total
number of entries, bytes in subdirectory, and volume name of
the working drive
Some problems with cursor positioning and other oddities in empty
directories, along with cursor problems when deleting
directories, eliminated
Problems when default directory was deleted eliminated
>10MB of tagged files now display properly
Internal file viewer finally fixed properly (Thanks to Peter
Esherick for sharing his fix in DC with me)
Additional Verify option (ON when copying to floppy only)
The left-shift can optionally replace Alt as a hot key for
improved interoperability with DESQView
Date/Time sorting fixed (Time wasn't sorting in most descending
order within a particular date)
P-Copy message fixed
Both the Create Directory and the manual refresh function
(Alt-F4) now attempt to maintain the cursor at the current
filename
Major documentation rework. Also the printed manual is
now "desktop publishing quality"
Various changes in included programs (for license and other
reasons)
Message added when shelling to DOS
CONVERT has been updated and fixed to bring over color
modifications from earlier revisions
Many more exciting (and hopefully useful) additions are planned for future
revisions. Originally, I planned for this rev to be a "major release." As
you can see above, DF does incorporate quite a wide range of new features,
but not as many as originally planned. Nevertheless, I wanted to get this
rev out so that the bug and "feature" fixes (and new functionality) could
get into users' hands within a reasonable time.
Anyway, here are some of my ideas for future releases. Most will likely
occur in the next major release or later; some may occur earlier:
Enhanced "tree-view" functionality to replace RF. This may be through
a "DF-enhanced" but will more likely be through a new
external program
Integrated mouse support
Perstor Ultravision compatibility
A possible TSR version
Command line file filter mask
Time/Date change functions
Possibly some sort of mechanism to act on multiple files
Miscellaneous Notes:
1) A SPECIAL OFFER TO REGISTERED USERS: This applies to both new and old
registered users. If you obtained this file through a BBS and had
previously registered, you can still take advantage of this offer. Just
get in touch with me and I'll make sure you get the appropriate
information. The offer is this:

2) 4DOS 3.00 -- I recently got around to trying Tom Rawson's excellent
product 4DOS which provides a complete replacement for COMMAND.COM with
many enhancements. It appears to work fine with DF with one caveat: the
4DOS.COM file should be in the root directory and should be pointed to with
a SET COMSPEC=C:\4DOS.COM line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. I'll look into
why 4DOS must be in the root directory in a future release. I suspect the
problem is that C:\4DOS is the same length as COMMAND and that if they're
not (because, for example, 4DOS is preceeded by a path specification), the
internal copying which goes on for shells does not happen properly.
I've since been told that 4DOS isn't as picky as I indicate above (and that
an alternative which uses less memory is to SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM).
