  1. The following are the major new features contained in DF Version 3.50a
  2. and DF 3.50.

  4.           DF VERSION 3.50a
  5.  
  6.           DFCONFIG problems with LShift/Alt and Extended Keyboard support
  7.                fixed
  8.           Volume label display: Period eliminated for names over 8
  9.                characters
  10.           User-defined command lines: The character after the ~ was being
  11.                skipped.  Corrected.
  12.           Potential CONVERT problem which may have caused problems
  13.                converting < rev 3.00 files corrected
  14.           Modified the latest version of PC Magazine's RN directory
  15.                tree program and included as the new RF shell.  This may 
  16.                solve the DOS 4.0 problems encountered by users.

  18.           DF VERSION 3.50

  20.           General cleanup of shell routines should result in more reliable
  21.                operation for a wider range of programs (user-defined and
  22.                Run a Program)
  23.           Parameters can be inserted at runtime in user-defined functions
  24.           Optional support for F11/F12 added to user-defined functions
  25.           Checks added to path length (63 characters max) and length of
  26.                user command lines when expanded (i.e. file names filled in,
  27.                etc.) to prevent overruns
  28.           Menu moved to avoid conflict with long destination path names
  29.           Information added to display: number of highlighted entry, total
  30.                number of entries, bytes in subdirectory, and volume name of
  31.                the working drive
  32.           Some problems with cursor positioning and other oddities in empty
  33.                directories, along with cursor problems when deleting
  34.                directories, eliminated
  35.           Problems when default directory was deleted eliminated
  36.           >10MB of tagged files now display properly
  37.           Internal file viewer finally fixed properly (Thanks to Peter
  38.                Esherick for sharing his fix in DC  with me)
  39.           Additional Verify option (ON when copying to floppy only)
  40.           The left-shift can optionally replace Alt as a hot key for
  41.                improved interoperability with DESQView
  42.           Date/Time sorting fixed (Time wasn't sorting in most descending
  43.                order within a particular date)
  44.           P-Copy message fixed
  45.           Both the Create Directory and the manual refresh function
  46.                (Alt-F4) now attempt to maintain the cursor at the current
  47.                filename
  48.           Major documentation rework.  Also the printed manual is
  49.                now "desktop publishing quality"
  50.           Various changes in included programs (for license and other
  51.                reasons)
  52.           Message added when shelling to DOS
  53.           CONVERT has been updated and fixed to bring over color
  54.                modifications from earlier revisions

  57. Many more exciting (and hopefully useful) additions are planned for future
  58. revisions.  Originally, I planned for this rev to be a "major release."  As
  59. you can see above, DF does incorporate quite a wide range of new features,
  60. but not as many as originally planned.  Nevertheless, I wanted to get this
  61. rev out so that the bug and "feature" fixes (and new functionality) could
  62. get into users' hands within a reasonable time.

  64. Anyway, here are some of my ideas for future releases.  Most will likely
  65. occur in the next major release or later; some may occur earlier:

  67.      Enhanced "tree-view" functionality to replace RF.  This may be through
  68.           a "DF-enhanced" but will more likely be through a new
  69.           external program
  70.      Integrated mouse support
  71.      Perstor Ultravision compatibility
  72.      A possible TSR version
  73.      Command line file filter mask
  74.      Time/Date change functions
  75.      Possibly some sort of mechanism to act on multiple files
  76.

  92. 2) 4DOS 3.00 -- I recently got around to trying Tom Rawson's excellent
  93. product 4DOS which provides a complete replacement for COMMAND.COM with
  94. many enhancements.  It appears to work fine with DF with one caveat: the
  95. 4DOS.COM file should be in the root directory and should be pointed to with
  96. a SET COMSPEC=C:\4DOS.COM line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  I'll look into
  97. why 4DOS must be in the root directory in a future release.  I suspect the
  98. problem is that C:\4DOS is the same length as COMMAND and that if they're
  99. not (because, for example, 4DOS is preceeded by a path specification), the
  100. internal copying which goes on for shells does not happen properly.

  102. I've since been told that 4DOS isn't as picky as I indicate above (and that
  103. an alternative which uses less memory is to SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM).
