Introduction
What is MrMenu?
MrMenu is a menu-driven operating environment for business use.
Also, MrMenu provides a very high degree of data security. MrMenu
is compatible with IBM PC's and clones. Its use will ease in the
loading and operation of all programs presently on your computers
hard drive.
MrMenu is easy to understand and use. To access a program simply
enter a password and a few keystrokes. Once accomplished you will
be able to run the selected computer application. MrMenu allows
access to as many as 6,561 different programs or applications.
Its only limitation is the number of programs you desire to run.
Why use MrMenu?
MrMenu provides business owners, managers and system
administrators with a significant degree of data security. This
security factor has become vital in today's business environment.
Once installed and operational, MrMenu is as easy to use as any
other menuing application. Users will not know they are using
anything more than a menu program.
MrMenu replaces several different programs currently on the
market with one convenient integrated package. MrMenu replaces:
o Menuing programs
o Data security programs
o Audit trail programs
o Password programs
MrMenu user manual 1
Here are just a few reasons why MrMenu is a wise choice:
o Limits access to authorized persons.
o Tracks incorrect password attempts.
o Provides an audit trail of programs used and the names of
authorized persons using the computer system.
o Prevents access of the computer hard drive when booting
from a floppy disk drive.
o Optional ability to provide a recurring event checker. Use
it to optimize the hard drive, check for viruses or any
recurring event.
o Uses only 5k of RAM while running an application.
Acknowledgments
Energy Software expresses thanks to the following individuals for
the assistance provided during the development of MrMenu:
Herb Martin - Provided many security ideas which were
incorporated into MrMenu.
Harold Thomson - Provided many routines for MrMenu, This
increased both the speed and efficiency of
operation.
A special thanks to Charles Philip Justice Jr. my 12 year old
friend who was a better hacker than most adults. Also, without
the help of the following MrMenu would not have been possible;
John Collie, Jeff Greenhill, Vanessa Justice, John Nichols,
Marikay Rowlee.
How to Install

Selecting security level NONE:
MrMenu will acknowledge the selection and save the choice.
In selecting this option the path variable in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
must include ';C:\MRMENU' also the last line of the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file must be 'MENU'.
Selecting security level SOME:
You will be asked to provide the following:
At what level do you wish to provide DOS shell ?
This response will require a number between 0-9. The higher the
number the higher the security level of the user to access DOS.
NOTE: A DOS shell is a bypass to the operating system. When using
the DOS shell the C:\> will appear. To return to MrMenu simply
type EXIT.
In selecting this option the path variable in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
must include ';C:\MRMENU' also the last line of the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file must be 'MRMENU'.
Selecting security level TIGHT:
You will be asked to provide the following:
At what level do you wish to provide DOS shell ?
This response will require a number between 0-9. The higher the
number the higher the security level of the user to access DOS.
Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT ?
If the response is 'N' then MrMenu will rename your present
AUTOEXEC.BAT file AUTOEXEC.XXX, placing it in the MRMENU sub
directory. A new AUTOEXEC.BAT file with the below commands:
MrMenu user manual 5
BREAK = OFF
PATH = C:;C:\MRMENU
MRMENU
It is best to modify your present AUTOEXEC.BAT file if the
present file is large, has complex instructions or is presently
configured for other programs. Should you decide to modify the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file then MrMenu will complete the following
actions:
1. Ask if you desire to delete the last line of your present
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This is required if another menu
application is currently in use.
2. Make a copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT renaming it AUTOEXEC.XXX and
placing in the MRMENU directory.
3. Place BREAK = OFF as the 1st. line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
4. Attach the selected MrMenu default directory to the existing
path statement.
5. Make MRMENU the last line of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
With security level TIGHT MrMenu will modify or create a
CONFIG.SYS file. If a CONFIG.SYS already exists it will be
renamed CONFIG.XXX and placed in the MRMENU directory.
Modifications to an existing CONFIG.SYS file are the insertion of
BREAK OFF. If a CONFIG.SYS does not exist MrMenu will create one.
The created CONFIG.SYS will contain the below instructions:
BREAK OFF
FILES = 15
BUFFERS = 20
Color Selection:
MrMenu allows you, the System Administrator, to select screen
colors that are most pleasing to the user's tastes. To select
screen colors, from the main installation menu, move the litebar
to Configuration of screen colors. Press the RETURN key and the
color's sub-menu will appear. By moving the litebar up or down
you may select the feature to modify. Once a feature has been
selected, a box displaying the color attributes will appear on
the right side of the screen. To change a foreground color press
the 'F' key to change a background color press the 'B' key.

MrMenu user manual 6
Recurring Event Option
A recurring event is any program desired to run at preset
intervals. A typical recurring event may be a disk optimizing
program or a virus check program.
MrMenu has provisions to conduct a recurring event. The use of
this feature is highly recommended, though not required. Two
entries are required to enable use of the recurring event option
while using MrMenu, they are:
Program selection
Frequency
Program selection is the name of the recurring event. You must
enter the program name with NO extension. If no recurring event
is warranted or needed, simply enter a zero (0) in the program
selection block. The program MUST be in the path to properly
execute.
Frequency: MrMenu will perform a recurring check on a daily,
weekly or monthly basis. To select a recurring option frequency
press the key that reflects the first letter of the available
choices.
Note: If using a virus protection program the frequency of use
should be determined by the amount of outside files that are run
on the particular computer in which MrMenu is installed. If a
large amount of data interchange between two computers is done
daily, a daily virus check may be a wise option. If some files
are interchanged it may be wise to conduct a check weekly. At a
minimum, a monthly check is recommended.
Administrator Password
For any security level setting you must enter a System
Administrator password. The administrator password must be a
minimum of 5 characters and less than 9. You will be asked to
type the password twice. The first time is to check the
password, the second time is for verification purposes. If the
password is not verified the second time you must enter the
password again. The System Administrator password is a very
important part of your systems total security envelope. During
the installation process MrMenu will not continue unless the
administrator password is valid.
NOTE: A recommended method of password selection is randomly
picking a word from a book. Choosing your spouses first name or
the name of a pet will not offer much security for an individual
attempting to enter the System Administrator area.
MrMenu user manual 7
User Track:
(Only available with security levels SOME or TIGHT.)
User track is a needed feature for System Administrators desiring
an audit trail of the users of the system. MrMenu has two
methods of user tracking.

tight an astrict (*) will be placed next to the users name when
MrMenu must log the user off. A message (- ERROR -) is placed
next to the users name is an error occur while a selected
application is running. This could be accidently turning off the
power or the system locks up while running an application.
User name, program, and hours: This feature records the log on
and log off time of all programs and the user's name.
If a user tracking feature is selected, the log files will be
purged once a month. It is possible to maintain 2 months of audit

the appropriate entry. You will then be asked if the entries are
correct.
Program Track:

Program track is a useful feature for System Administrators
desiring an audit trail of the use of programs on the system.
MrMenu has two methods of tracking.
Program name and hours: This feature records the log-on and

Program name, user and hours: This feature records the log-on
and log-off time of all programs and the user of the program.
If a program track feature is selected, the log files will be
purged once a month. It is possible to maintain 2 months of audit
trail history. To select either function enter a 'Y' or an 'N' by
the appropriate entry. You will then be asked if the entries are
correct.

name or motto, up to 40 characters, may be used. The company name
or motto will appear directly below the MrMenu copyright

the sender can delete the message. When a message is sent to an
individual only the receiver may delete the message. Should you
decide electronic mail is needed enter the electronic mail
section and enter 'Y'.
MrMenu Operation:
For computers with security levels, SOME and TIGHT, MrMenu will
ask for a password to enter the MrMenu environment. MrMenu will
allow THREE (3) attempts to enter the system. If the correct

colors wildly. Additionally, an alarm will sound. The screen will
blank for 30 seconds before a user may attempt to reenter the
system again. When an incorrect password is entered and the
computer is configured with a security level of TIGHT, the
incorrect password, time, and date are entered in the DENY.LOG.
This log can be viewed in the System Administrators area. If a
password is not entered in 2 minutes, the MrMenu password entry
screen will clear and place the reminder 'MrMenu screen saver.
Any key to continue.' on the screen. Any keyboard activity will
return you to the MrMenu password entry screen.

level is the welcome screen. Also, when an application has
exited, control will return to MrMenu and this will be the
default screen. With a security level TIGHT or SOME MrMenu will
automatically log a user off if no keyboard occurs in 5 minutes.
An astrict (*) will be placed in the User Name and Hours of Use
log to denote computer logoff.
From this screen the user may use the 'F' (function) keys.
Available commands are located at the bottom of the screen.
NOTE: Systems with a TIGHT security level have an automatic
log-off feature during this screen. While this screen is
displayed and no keyboard activity has occurred in 5 minutes

automatically type EXIT if no keyboard activity in 5 minutes.
F5 - Calculator:
MrMenu provides a calculator to all users. The calculator has a
twelve number display. The MrMenu calculator also provides a tape
similar to that of adding machines. The tape is capable of
holding the last 200 calculator operations. MrMenu's calculator
has the ability to retain a number in memory for later recall. If
a number is in memory the letter 'M' will be displayed on the
left side of the calculator display screen. The following keys
are active for use with the calculator:

in the middle of the right side of the screen. Additionally,
'MAIL' will flash above the letter. The user must press F6 to
receive the letter. When a letter is sent to all users only the
sender may delete the letter. If a letter is sent to a specific
user only the receiver may delete the message. Any user with a
valid password may use the Email service. A user viewing a letter
has the option to delete the letter, print the letter and

running and application, occasionally conflicts result. If
bizarre actions occur while running an application the below
actions are recommended. The first entry on the parameter line
should be either C: or *S*. Placing the C: will cause a copy of
COMMAND.COM to created after MrMenu removes itself from memory.
The use of *S* as the first entry item on the parameter line will
cause MrMenu to remain in memory. Additionally, a copy of
COMMAND.COM will be created before running the requested
application.
Minimum Entrance Security Level : This field is set at 0 if a
security level of NONE is selected. When a security level SOME
and TIGHT has been selected the default level is set at 6. This
field can be changed. Programs which contain sensitive data
should have a higher security level.
Pause after Exit : This entry when set to 'Y' will hold the
program exit screen until the user presses any key. It is useful
for utility programs which display status information and then
exit the application.
Pause for Parameters : This field when set to 'Y' will pause for
additional parameter prior to program execution. If parameters
have been entered in the parameters line, listed above, they may
be edited when this option is set to 'Y'. The benefit of this
entry is when program parameters are dynamic.
Change / Delete Menu
From this selection you may edit or delete a previously entered
menu item. All the data entry requirements of Add menu are in
effect in this area.
New User
The new user selection is only available for security levels of
SOME or TIGHT. The information below is required when entering a
new user;
MrMenu user manual 13
User Name : This is the name of the user, entered first name
first. Length of the entry is limited to 30 characters.
User Password : This is the password the user is required to use
when logging on to the system. The password should be selected by
the System Administrator and chosen at random. It is recommended
the password be at least 5 characters in length.
MrMenu will support passwords less than 5 characters. Length of
the entry is limited to 8 characters. Once a password is entered
MrMenu will check the password against all other existing
passwords. This is done to insure no two passwords are the same.
If the password is the same as another you will be given the
opportunity to change the password. A password must be selected.
User Security Level : This is the security level of the user.
Levels range from 0 - 9. The higher the number the higher the
more important the user. When logging on as the System
Administrator the user security level is nine (9). A security
level must be given to every user. As an example; a user with a
security level of 5 will only see menu selections with a security
level of 5 and below. A security level must be assigned.
Delete / Change user : This function works just like New User.
This area is required to change user information or delete a
user.

Security Level
The data security sub-menu lists three options; NONE, SOME and
ABORT. An explanation of each and features are given below:
NONE -
o MrMenu will not provide any security.
o MrMenu will not ask for a password for entry to system.
o DOS shell is provided to all users.
o Program access is not controlled.
o User tracking is unavailable.
o Program tracking is unavailable.
o Access to System Administrator area is not controlled.
o Electronic mail feature is disabled.
SOME -
o MrMenu will ask for a password to enter the program
o DOS shell is provided to selected users.
o Program access is controlled.
o User tracking is available, if enabled.
o Program tracking is available, if enabled.
o Access to System Administrator area is controlled.
ABORT - return to the reconfigure menu.
If you chose NONE as your security level MrMenu will acknowledge
the selection and save the choice. If you chose SOME MrMenu will
ask the below question:
At what level do you wish to provide DOS shell ?
This response will require a number between 0-9, the higher the
number the fewer people will have access to a DOS shell.
NOTE: A DOS shell is a bypass to the operating system. When using
the DOS shell the C:\> will appear. To return to MrMenu simply
type EXIT.
Color Selection:
MrMenu allows you, the System Administrator, to select screen
colors that you find most pleasing. To select screen colors, from
the reconfigure menu, move the litebar to Configuration of screen
colors. Press the RETURN key and the color's sub-menu will
appear. By moving the litebar up or down you may select the
MrMenu user manual 15
colors you desire to modify. Once a feature has been selected a
box displaying the color attributes will appear on the right side
of the screen. To change a foreground color press the 'F' key to
change a background color press the 'B' key. MrMenu offers 16
foreground colors and 8 background colors. Once the desired
colors are selected press the letter 'O' key. Your selection for
that feature will be temporarily saved. You may do this for all
the listed screen elements. When you are satisfied with the
screen colors simply use the save entry on the
sub-menu.
Recurring Event:
A recurring event is any program, or programs, which are needed
to provide a useful function. An example would be; hard disk
optimizing programs or virus checkers. If two or more programs
are to be run as a recurring event a BATCH file must be created.
Refer to your DOS user manual for instructions on construction of
a BATCH file. Two entries are required to enable use of the
recurring event option while using MrMenu they are:
Program selection
Frequency
Program Selection is the name of the recurring event program.
If a recurring event is not warranted or needed, simply enter '0'
in the program selection block.
Frequency: MrMenu will conduct a recurring event on a Daily,
Weekly or Monthly basis. Select a frequency by pressing the
first letter of the available choices.
Note: In using an optimizing program the frequency of use should
be determined by the amount of file manipulation conducted on the
particular computer in which MrMenu is installed. If a large
amount of data interchange between two computers is done daily, a
daily recurring event check may be a wise option. If some files
are manipulated it may be wise to conduct a check weekly. At a
minimum, a monthly check is recommended.
Administrator Password:
For any security level setting you must enter a System
Administrator password. The Administrator password must be a
minimum of 5 characters and less than 9. You will be asked to
type the password twice. The first time is to check the password,
the second time is for verification purposes. If the password is
not verified the second time you must enter the password again.
The System Administrator password is a very important part of
your systems total security envelope. If the security level is
tight you must have a verified password to exit the
administrator's area.

NOTE: A recommended method of password selection is randomly
picking a word from a book. Choosing your spouses first name or
the name of a pet will not offer much security for an individual
attempting to enter the System Administrator area.
User Track:
User track is a useful feature for a System Administrator
desiring an audit trail of the users of the system. MrMenu has
two methods of user tracking:
User name and hours: This feature records the log-on and log-off
time of any authorized user. If MrMenu must log the user off an
astrict (*) will be placed on the left portion of the screen when
the information is displayed. If a user accidently powers down an
entry - ERROR - will be placed next to the users name to alert
the System Administrator of the error.
User name, program, and hours: This feature records the log-on
and log-off time of all programs and the users name.
If a user tracking feature is selected, the log files will be
purged once a month. To select each function enter either a 'Y'
or an 'N' by the appropriate entry.
Program Track:

Electronic Mail:
MrMenu offers electronic mail (Email) support for all of its
users. MrMenu's Email can send a message to all users or selected
users. Message length is limited to 8 lines at 50 characters per

delete the message. When a message is sent to an individual only
the receiver may delete the message. Should you decide Email is
needed enter the electronic mail section and enter 'Y'.
View Tracking:
Depending on the security level and the choice made during
installation or reconfirmation, MrMenu will provide an audit
trail of all programs run and authorized users. The view tracking
feature can provide up to four different types of tracking, they
are;
User name and program use
User name, hours of use and program use
Program name and hours of use
Program name, user and hours of use
Deny log
This function will provides two screen displays of the selected
data. In addition MrMenu will either print the current screen or
the entire file. All active records will be purged monthly, at
the beginning of the month. All purged files will contain the
extension .OLD for one additional month. Either the current or
the purged files are available for viewing by MrMenu. DENY.LOG is
automatically maintained with a security level of TIGHT for one
month.
Uninstall:
This feature will remove all MrMenu files, remove the MrMenu
directory and restore the original AUTOEXEC.BAT and/or
CONFIG.SYS. Prior to entering this function it is required that
you have the following; Three (3) blank disks for security level
NONE. Six (6) blank disks for security level SOME or TIGHT. The
two MrMenu working disks. The program will move all files to the
blank disks. The System Administrator will be guided though each
step and be prompted to exchange disks when required. For
reinstallation simply install MrMenu and then copy the three (3)
or six (6) disks to the MrMenu default directory. MrMenu will be
configured and operate as it did prior to being uninstalled.
Exit to Main:
This is the exit option to return to MrMenu. Selecting this
option will provide four choices:
MrMenu user manual 18
Exit to Main
Shell to DOS
Xit to DOS
Return to administrator
Except for Exit to Main, each of the above entries requires the
System Administrator password be entered if not entered at
log-on. The Xit to DOS function is the only recommended method to
properly terminate operation of MrMenu. The Xit to DOS allows
MrMenu to close all open files and implement shutdown
procedures.
WARNING: Xit to DOS is the ONLY method in which to install other
programs which are required to be installed. When you Xit to DOS
MrMenu returns the CONFIG.SYS and the AUTOEXEC.BAT to there
normal file attributes. To return to MrMenu type 'MRMENU'.
