This is file: README.NOW.
This shareware version (2.00U) of FANSI-CONSOLE has been superceded by a newer
non-shareware version (3.00) and is available only under a limited support
policy and update policy. Version 2.00U does not completely support PS/2/VGA
display adapters or allow you to distinguish all of the enhanced (101/102 key)
keyboard keys from each other. Nor does it allow you to use 132 column modes
available on many EGAs. Because of its lower price, purchase of this version
does not entitle you to any free updates to version 3.00 which *does* support
these hardware items more completely. For more information about version 3.00,
see the update announcement in the file FCONUPD3.PQN (also in squeezed form).
However, version 2.00 serves as a reasonable demo of many of the basic
capabilities of version 3.00 even on PS/2s, VGAs, and enhanced keyboards.
There is an on-disk abbreviated user manual for FANSI-CONSOLE 2.00 in the file
FCONSOLE.DQC. It is in squeezed form and must first be unsqueezed using the
UNSQZ program. To do this, use a command similar to the following command:
UNSQZ A:FCONSOLE.DQC B:FCONSOLE.DOC
You may need to use different drive letters, depending on where the files are.
Note that the first file name extension has a Q in the middle,
but the second file name extension is different and has an O in the middle!
The resulting file is much bigger than the original, so you may want
to put it on a different disk all by itself. After unsqueezing the
abbreviated user manual, you may either TYPE it or PRINT it.
To PRINT it, make sure that your printer is set for at least 62
lines per page (no perforation skip) and that carriage returns
do not also automatically generate line feeds.
The abbreviated user manual has overprinting and underlining in it which
is done by using a carriage return without a line feed immediately following.
Nearly all editors do NOT understand this file well enough to display it
on the screen or print it reasonably. It was meant only to be PRINTed or
TYPEd. If you download the abbreviated user manual in an unsqueezed ASCII
form from a bulletin board or timesharing service, be aware that it may
automatically add line feeds after carriage returns.
If it does this, the file will not be conveniently printable or readable,
and there will not be a way to undo the additions.
In order to conserve space, there are also tab characters used in the
FCONSOLE.DOC file. They are meant to be used to tab to every eighth column.
If you do not set up your printer to do this (and most are automatically),
then the spacing and overprinting will not come out right on your printer.
Although everything will be out of place, the overprinting will be
the most obviously out of place. If you have this problem,
the EXPAND program can be used to expand the tab characters into spaces.
To do this, use commands similar to the following:
EXPAND A:FCONSOLE.DOC B:FCONSOLE.OUT
REN B:FCONSOLE.OUT FCONSOLE.DOC
You may need to use different drive letters, depending on where the files are.
Since the files are very large, you may need to put them on different drives.
For a list of recent changes to FANSI-CONSOLE, examine the file FCONSOLE.HST.
Some information found there may not yet be in the printed or
abbreviated user manuals. Please check these changes before calling
Hersey Micro Consulting about problems.
You may have two versions of FANSI-CONSOLE on your distribution diskette.
The version in the file called FCONSOLE.DEV is the commercial version and
is usually the more stable more bugfree version of FANSI-CONSOLE.
It is the version which most closely matches the current printed user
manual and is the version which you have purchased. The version of
FANSI-CONSOLE in the file called FCONBETA.DEV is the beta test version,
or sometimes the previous commercial version, and may have newer features
which are not described in the current printed user manual, or not have some
features. Normally the beta test version has not been tested as well or
as long as the commercial version and may have more bugs. The beta test
version is provided for those who are adventureous and would like a chance
to use and to comment on newer features before they are released as part of
the next commercial version. The abbreviated user manual found on the
diskette matches the beta test version if it is newer. When a new commercial
version first comes out, the old commercial version becomes FCONBETA.DEV until
a new beta test version is ready.
